Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

Food was delicious and wine list on point. A few too many dead animals around the room for my taste but comfortable and service was attentive.

We tried St Anselm last winter and had a horrible experience that we had to call on the Manager to resolve some issues. We decided to give a second chance and everything worked out perfectly. Excellent steak!

I loved everything about St. Anselm! A friend and I went for Sunday breakfast/brunch. Our waitress was amazing and gave great recommendations. The place is large and super cute! The food was amazing—We had the mushroom omelette and steak and eggs—both delicious! And to top it off we had the ice cream cake which was to die for! Highly recommend!

Loved everything about this place. The decor, menu, host, server, and sommelier, were all experts with the restaurant and menu. And the food was perfection. I went with a friend and neither of us had been there before. We were hungry and ordered two apps to share, two entrees, and two sharable sides. That was way too much food for us but we were happy to have the variety. Loved the biscuits with pimento! We both fully enjoyed the entrees, the butcher steak and the tuna steak, prepared perfectly as ordered. We got the cauliflower and the fries that were both so yummy that we ate more than we should have and still had a lot of leftovers. We will go back and have to limit our choices from the nice menu of a variety of options. Perfectly prepared and presented and more reasonably priced than some, this is now one of my favorite restaurants in DC. Only downside was the possibly sketchy neighborhood. Still, I will go back. And hopefully soon!

We hadn’t been in a while and it’s really gone downhill. No updates to the menu - nothing new to try. We made a reservation well in advance but we’re stuck in some weird back room on folding chairs. The front room was filled with young white couples. The back room not so much. The server did all he could but overall a lame experience and not worth the money.

Too far out of the way for a $28 chewy steak. Ordered medium rare. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, just wasn’t impressed.

There was three if us for dinner and we had a great time. The food was wonderful and our server room good care of us. We are family style and they sliced the steaks for us -- making it easier to share.
I wasn't feeling well and we had to leave. Our server was very attentive and got me a soda and bitters to help me feel better. A very personal touch.

DC has a lot of restaurants to offer. This one was selected by my girlfriend, and i was impressed not only by great quality of food (the cauliflower side dish is a must) and stakes were great but also the service and attention it was given it customers. We arrived on time but our tables were not ready so we got seated like 20 to 25 mins later. The manager apologized and offered us a free round of drinks or an appetizer. Little gestures like that make a big difference in the crowded dc restaurant market. Well done, would def come back.

The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. The crab deviled eggs are the best I've had. The lamb was tender and well seasoned. The roasted kalette was a nice surprise. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I would definitely get it again. It's my second visit and I was not disappointed. I love the food and the portion sizes. It's a good place for an event meal or get together with friend. However, it's loud, so talking is a little hard unless you are sitting right next to each other.

My boyfriend and I came here New Years Eve and I’m so glad we did. We had Eddie as our server and he was very attentive and made sure we had an amazing experience. The food was great and so were the drinks. It was obviously louder since it was busy and a holiday but we didn’t mind. I would definitely recommend St. Anselm to anyone looking for a cozy atmosphere and great food!

Great NYE meal - I’m beginning to think this place now has best steak in DC (sorry Acqua al 2!). Food is great across-the-board, service is attentive and Vanessa is fantastic with the wines - trust her! Thanks.

Outstanding as usual. The staff is a “cut” above the rest. My friend had the steak, kale side, a port wine dessert flight and the carrot cake. She thoroughly enjoyed her food. I was fasting and our waiter was considerate and didn’t make me feel unattended to.

I love this establishment and I am excited to see them busy and the quality of service never waiver when I go in to dine.

Overall decor and ambiance made me feel like I was at a high end eatery in Brooklyn. And hurry in for those holidays specials. Venison from New Zealand and more.

Our favorite steakhouse in DC. Fantastic food (especially the salmon collar!) including the steak and various side dishes. The pan browned mashed potatoes are good, but it would be nice to have a traditional option. We really like the ambiance, it is appropriate to a great restaurant but laid back and we feel comfortable in jeans. Same for the servers, perfect combination of professional but laid back.

Everything we ordered was good, especially the biscuits. The night was sort of ruined by the chicken dish. The served the head of the chicken still attached to it which was a big turn off. Yeah I know it proofs it’s free range but come on man. You wouldn’t put a cows head on the table if I ordered a steak. I would go again but just order a little more carefully.

Mediocre meal, tasteless side dishes, unimpressed given the high price. My nearly $50 ribeye had no flavor, the five steak fries were tasteless, and the cauliflower dish was such a letdown. The only thing we enjoyed were the biscuits with pimento cheese.

St. Anselm was recommended by a friend for our Anniversary Dinner. We had no idea what to expect, but had a great time. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and service was excellent. The food was outstanding (I had a NY strip steak, my wife had the salmon collar).

Maybe a little loud, but that’s the energy.

Despite the myriad glowing reviews I found St. Anselm to be uncomfortably primitive. Hard seats, drafty and loud dining room, sloppily dressed server who talked our ears off, and food just plunked on the plate in it's most primal form. I'm talking a whole chicken with the head, neck and feet plus a plastic squeeze bottle of sauce jammed between its legs. UGH. A whole fish, head included, hanging off the edges of the plate. If you want a vegetable with your giant slab of meat, you must order it separately. I say go for a drink at the bar, and have the biscuits. Not a good place for a nice meal, unless you're in the mood for a medieval experience.
