Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

I reserved an outdoor table. Upon arrival I was informed that there were no outdoor tables available for the rest of the evening and an indoor table couldn’t be accommodated for an hour one more, earliest seating 9pm. I understand that in these extraordinary times, weather can impact outdoor seating availability; however, I never received a call or notification from the restaurant before arriving that they couldn’t accommodate us in a reasonable way or time. The last straw is the restaurant reported that I was a no show, which is completely untrue. I’d recommended calling to confirm what your seating arrangements will be before counting on reservations. And my suggestion to the restaurant is to remove outdoor seating that isn’t available to prevent wasting customers time in the future.

I took a chance on this restaurant with no personal recommendations. It was fantastic! I loved the outdoor space, the vibe of the neighborhood, and the friendly waitstaff. It made my last night in DC special. The food was really delicious. DO NOT pass up on the fabulous biscuits...they are the bomb! I would have taken a barrel of these home with me!

This was my 2nd visit to St. Anselm, and the 1st during COVID. I was impressed with the care being taken by the staff. Outdoor seating, reservations available, temps taken before getting a table, masks everywhere, limited menus (online via QR code, but paper ones available by request). They really seemed to be taking extra care. Be aware, the outdoor area can be windy, so wear layers in case you get chilled. I sat under a heater so it was very nice.

As far as food, I got a steak, biscuits, and a beverage. The steak was excellent (honestly, much better than the one I had on my 1st visit to St.A) as were the biscuits. The drink was a bit too strong for me, but I'm a light drinker so I'm sure heavier drinkers would like it better. So, if you are looking for some upscale dining during a pandemic, you could do worse than St. Anselm.

Great spot near Union Market. Staff was very friendly and timely with getting our food/drinks out. Food was excellent and prices were not bad at all. Outdoor seating was plentiful. Would highly recommend this place (especially starting with the buttermilk biscuits w/pimento cheese)

Wonderful outdoor dining! My partner and I went to dinner for his birthday. As always, the food was wonderful and the service amazing. In addition, the outdoor seating with heaters made it an enjoyable night out during these covid times.

The staff at St. Anselm did an AMAZING job in a tough situation w/Covid...I took my girlfriend there for her birthday and it was absolutely perfect, even with the stressed situation and social distancing...If you haven't been to this restaurant, GO! The food is amazing, the cocktails are expertly crafted, and the ambiance can't be beat...good for a casual dinner with friends or for an event like a birthday. All credit to the staff for making it work in trying times.

I much prefer the dinner menu at St. Anselm than the brunch menu. The still have a lot of the great appetizers and mains, but the brunch plates themselves could use more work.

The service and quality of food is not comparable to the ambiance. I've been here several times and I'm afraid to say that the quality of food and service for the amount of money you spend has declined every time I've come. I bought my boyfriend here after raving about it. The service didn't meet our expectations for the price point. My boyfriend's inquiry of "what's good here, what are your most requested menu items?" was met with an "ummm, depends on what you're in the mood for. We have steak, salmon and other seafood items". Well, clearly we can see what's on the menu. This was his opportunity to sell us on an experience - but that didn't happen. I don't want to deter anyone from going because I think the place was awesome at one point. I just want this review to become a part of the management's assessment of areas to improve upon.

St. Anselm is a great choice for a meal, or just drinks. The staff are exceptionally friendly and professional. They have a touchless thermometer in the foyer that scans your forehead. Extensive wine list (dozens of pages). Music is bluesy, classic rock that definitely fits with the decor. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Worst steak I’ve ever had... rubbery, fatty, had to send back as too rare which sld not happen in a steakhouse. Waiter acted like he was on speed, jiggy, never took time to shoot the breeze... generally lousy experience.

For a last dinner, St. Anselm is a solid choice. The social distancing is taken seriously without creating an uncomfortable experience. The service was amazing and truly listened to our tastes and made sure that the portions matched our appetites. I'd highly recommend asking the sommelier for suggestions when ordering a bottle of wine.

We had a rare date night and the virus protection measures were very much appreciated. As always the wine and meal was top notch. The only complaint would be the chairs were uncomfortable and the table legs were a problem for someone over 6’.
