St. Anselm - DC
Hanger steak was delicious!
Burger was overdone. Steak and eggs was not as good as last time we had been. They seemed overwhelmed and food was not the quality we are used to there.
Very accommodating. Loved the outdoor seating. Will be back
Yet another wonderful experience at St Anselm! The outdoor chalets are a great addition.
Fantastic!
Always the place for a steak! The cocktails are great too. Really liking the outdoor dining sheds!
Got the axe handle steak and after eating I slept like a baby!
The sides could of use a bit more flavor.. the beer mug was small in comparison to the price. Steak and chicken was on point. Ice cream cake and selected Rye was very good.
Picture a cross between a Montana lodge and a hipster lounge in Brooklyn. Throw in the kitchen from a Deep South dining mecca, but run by cooks from a Michelin star NYC brasserie. That's St. Anselm. Food that is authentically delicious and unfussy. Service that is warm but efficient, informed and helpful. If you don't order the huge buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese because of your diet, you're in the wrong place. Same with the teasingly smoky grilled oysters. The salmon collar is decadently rich and made to be shared. Also, the "crispy smashed" potatoes with a side of ranch dressing are just as good as an appetizer as a side dish. With entrees, I've liked every steak I've had on the menu. Friends also like the branzino and swordfish. If you're still hungry for dessert, I recommend the carrot cake (when they have it) and ice cream cake. The chocolate pudding is a little ordinary. I once had a scoop of homemade butter pecan ice cream that is in the Pantheon of the five best desserts I've ever had. Get it if they are serving it. Also: do yourself a favor and order one of the expensive Madieras on the menu as an aperitif. You're worth it.
great for every day dining as well as date night. st. anselm is a street over from my home, so i'm there often for a steak and glass of wine. the service is great and the staff enforces covid precautions.
I have been in this establishment couple times. They have really nice food. I don’t know who is the chef however his cooking is so yummy!
I took my husband to St Andelm’s for his birthday tonight. The staff were so attentive and fun. Special shoutouts to Meghan, who was happy to talk about wine, our server John, and Austin who brought us a couple birthday menus surprises. Our first time dining here. We’ll be back...soon. Great experience.
This was our first family dinner AT a DC restaurant in one year, and we chose St. Anselm's because we had had such a delicious experience previously. I had been thinking about their strip steak for months. Continued helpful wait staff who know how to make sure you get your steak cooked EXACTLY how you like it, unlike even some top steakhouses. A continued 5-star experience -- and 10 stars for the biscuits with pimento cheese. However...we were told as we were ordering that a special that night for dessert was strawberry shortcake and couldn't wait to try St. Anselm's version. So disappointing.
Two slices of angel food cake, with very limited number of strawberries in a sauce. A little dry, not much flavor. Probably only time my family has left any dessert on a plate. Certainly the chefs there know how to make a memorable version. All forgiven; great restaurant.
So disappointed service was slow ( due it being Easter Sunday)which is ok if only the waiter didn’t forget to put our order in then the food stayed in the expo window for a go amount of time since my eggs were cook over sunny side. Overall just disappointed.
Loved the food!! food quality was superb.
Great meal. A little sterile inside because of COVID regulations but overall very nice.
We were seated promptly, had a delicious brunch on Easter Sunday, the outside seating was great and the safety precautions were awesome!
We went for Easter. This was an amazing dining experience. Fine but not stuffy dining. Delicious good. Fantastic service. Safety precautions for all.
The food was amazing. Loved the atmosphere. We got the deviled eggs, beets with ricotta (omg), steak, acorn squash main.
Nice set-up with the booths outdoors.
Awful. Spilled an entire highball of soda all over me, and then spilled the au jus from my steak on me. Service recovery was non existent. Food was mediocre. Not worth the $$$$ price tag. Would not return with other solid options in the immediate area.
On point with protocols, and food and drinks as delicious as ever. Honestly, I had missed this place so much, and was so excited for the streetside shacks. They did not disappoint. Staff are as gracious and pleasant as can be, even under these circumstances. Steak perfectly temped, salmon collar still just SO good. Worth waiting for.
Made a reservation for indoor dining. COVID protocols were taken seriously- taking temperature, using alternating tables, requesting masks be worn when server is at the table. Our server was wonderful and knowledgeable about the menu. The grilled oyster appetizer was delicious. The steaks and sides were cooked to perfection. It can be pricey, but I think the quality matches. We will be return diners!
Sitting outside in the freezing cold. They don't even put heaters in the shacks outside. My steak got cold. Not worth it. Just stay home.
The food was delicious yet again. The steak was cooked exactly as requested. The baby iceberg salad is absolutely amazing and the bacon on top is like none other! Friendly service, easy to find parking, and no wait for table.
The food and cocktails here were excellent, and the service once we were seated in the restaurant was good. But the service at the start was very poor - we had to wait over 30 mins for our reserved table, and we were not offered a drink or anywhere warm to wait (despite there being many free heaters/tables outside). For the price of the meal here this aspect of the service should be much better.
I was seated 45 mins late for my reservation despite being there 5 mins early. Was never offered an apology by management or even approached by management. I have dined here many times pre and during the pandemic. I understand the difficult time restaurants are having but I followed every rule put in front of me with no complaint. The fact I wasn’t even offered a simple apology by management tells me how they value their customers. We are all in this together and I do my best to support as many local eateries as possible but I was hoping even minimal customer service would not be a casualty of the pandemic however it seems it is. I will have to think hard before coming here again.
This is the second time i've dined here, and easily one of my favorite places in DC! The temperature on the steak was spot on! Oysters were amazing, the biscuits.... Shall I go on?
The experience was pretty good overall. Food came out fast and the waiter had some good recommendations. I was there for a work meeting and we had a good sized table booth to accommodate food and some paperwork.
My only issue was having to ask for our server after waiting 10-15 mins when we were seated. However, once he arrived, he was amazing for the rest of the meal. Social distancing was in full effect and enforced. Tables were spaced appropriately. The food was absolutely fabulous. I am a steak fiend and my NY strip was cooked to perfection and had amazing flavor. The crab deviled eggs were a surprise treat being better than I expected. This was my first time there but definitely will not be my last especially since they are in the neighborhood.
The good: Food is amazing. We got the axe handle and it was cooked perfectly. Sides and biscuits are a must.
The bad: It was a special occasion, my husbands birthday, and they sat us at a horrible tiny table right by the main door. People walked within 6 ft of us constantly, we got gusts from the door open/closing, we couldn’t fit our meal on the table. There were tons of other open tables, so it wasn’t a space issue. Also, the server strongly hinted we should order dessert, we assumed because it would be on the house. It was not. We wouldn’t have ordered it if we’d known it was extra. There were just a lot of little ways they could have made our night special and they just didn’t.
Really great, even outside! It was raining but was able to stay dry and warm. Service was so wonderful and thoughtful and made my birthday dinner really special. Loved it all!
Service was extremely subpar for the price and caliber of the restaurant. Food was somewhat overpriced for what was received (e.g. bodega breakfast sandwhich @ $11 for an egg, cheese, and bacon on a roll). Would not recommend.
Update- GM reach out to me via open table I sent him my information 3-31-2021, and today 4-3-2021 I haven’t heard from him at all. Shows their type of costumer service.
To be honest, I have always liked this place but I got the tomahawk and it was very fatty and not to my liking, and to make matters worse our server has awful to say the least. After he serve our food he never came back to check on us at all, I had to keep waving him down to come to our table and towards the end I had to ask another server to please help us get a box to go and our check. If I ever go back there I will make sure he is not our server.
All around one of the best meals I've had in D.C. From the meat to the veggies, everything was full of vibrant flavors and color and cooked to perfection. The standout was obviously the steak, but all of the sides and the acorn squash were close rivals. Finally, if I could live off of only the buttermilk biscuits for the rest of my life, I would. The only thing I would say needs some attention and diversity is the cocktail list. The manhattan was phenomenal and a great pair with the meat. But the rest of the cocktail list was lacking some variance and could utilize the spirits a bit more.
If your are looking for a place to share good times and great food with friends then look no further. The chef does an amazing job.the salmon collar and the chef selection steak are a must have.
Outstanding meal. Service and food were great. That I gave the ambiance 4 instead of 5 stars has nothing to do with the restaurant and all to do with the absurd seating and dining calisthenics restaurants are forced to perform during the era of COVID.
Our server was excellent - helpful and friendly but not overbearing. My husband said the steak was the best he had in the US. I had a couple of wines by the glass and they were served at the perfect temperature. The carrot cake was delicious. Our 9-year-old didn’t care for the dead bear on the wall, but what can you do :)
Overall, a great restaurant we will happily recommend to our friends.
Incredible food and a great atmosphere! The buttermilk biscuits were divine!
Amazing can’t wait to go back
