St. Anselm - DC

$31 to $50
Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

Enjoyed dinner as always! It was our first time visiting since the pandemic started and the entire setup was safe outdoors. The waitstaff was very attentive and kept the drinks/food flowing. Will definitely be back!

Great food and service, can't wait to go back! The biscuits were amazing, and the whole fish my wife ordered was wonderful.

All the food was great: we ordered the biscuits, butcher's steak, grilled broccoli, crispy smashed potatoes, and chocolate cake. Everything was excellent, and we appreciate the sustainable sourcing. The prices are on the high side, but the portions were so generous that we ended up taking home a doggie bag of almost everything. We received excellent, energetic service from Chris, and he and the kitchen took care to ensure that a food allergy was thoroughly accommodated -- with information, recommendations on what could be ordered, and warnings of what should be avoided. Seating requests were also accommodated (a table not so close to another). My only criticism was the noise level (too high), but we did enjoy the music selection!

I guess because it was Father's Day, service was a little slow. Sat for awhile before our waitress appeared. A lot going on. Good thing OUR Father was patient.

First time eating here and I was not disappointed! From the front door to the timely delivery of food, everything was great! Lovely decor, not too loud for brunch and no masks required! I would definitely recommend this place.

I think the outdoor dining was great during Covid but now you sit in a wooden cubicle for an expensive dinner compared to the inside it is really not very nice. The ribeye was very disappointing compared to one I had at the Bethesda restaurant a few weeks before. The deviled eggs and oysters were delicious

Our server, Carlos was exceptional! Peter, Mgr. on Duty came over to welcome us and even chatted with us. A nice touch. The food was amazing. It was my birthday and we received a complimentary glass of wine. The rock fish and sword fish were superb. But those biscuits “sayyyy what?”’Amazing. A great time!!

We had a wonderful dinner. The experience was great but Bella made it even better! She was a wonderful server that checked on us enough, had great suggestions and witty banter but left us alone when the time was appropriate to continue our conversation. We would certainly come back for the food but the service was truly memorable!

Went for the first time for our anniversary. Had a mediocre experience after high expectations and hearing great things.

Two different sets of biscuits came out cold in the center. Received the wrong side dish and had to ask to have it replaced. Lamb leg steak tasted gamey and not fully cooked in a few spots. Friends had called ahead to have drinks/carrot cake paid for and presented to us as a surprise, with a personalized card. The server didn’t communicate to us that the drinks/cake was from anyone nor did they present us with the card.

I love St. Anselm - it felt as if the restaurant is leaning back into post-pandemic service and staff seemed new and overwhelmed. So give them your patience and love (and tips$$$) as we all get back into the swing of things!

Looking for a steakhouse....that you won't feel guilty for ordering seafood, or even chicken? Then this place is well worth coming to.

The bartenders know how to make the classic cocktails, and have a bunch of more complex drinks worth trying too.

Great modern, younger take on the steakhouse, with something for everyone....except vegans, I guess.

I'll start by saying I never write reviews. But this place was SO GOOD I had to say something - it was one of the best meals I've ever had. I got the smashed potatoes, broccoli, swordfish steak and oysters. The potatoes were impossibly good - so fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside, and they came with ranch that tasted homemade. I don't normally like ranch but I loved it. The swordfish had such a soft, buttery texture, and the chimichurri sauce was perfect. The broccoli and oysters were delicious too. The ambience was also great - the booths have an intimate, cozy feel and the music is not too loud so you can hear each other talk. Great place for a date!

My wife and I had a wonderful brunch here. Nearly everything we had was among the best we had ever had of that particular dish. We highly recommend the biscuits, the swizzle cocktail, and the French toast. The French toast was light and custardy, an absolute must-have. We never felt rushed and the ambiance was interesting and subdued. The only thing we didn’t like was that the outside chairs were not made with fat people (or anyone with wide hips) in mind. We had to switch to indoor seating in order to be able to sit comfortably.

Been wanting to try this restaurant for a long time. Finally got there last night. It’s a fun place has good vibes. Everyone is very friendly. We sat outside. The indoor seating is very close and therefore it is very loud. Glad we had an outside table. Our waiter was excellent. Great personality and very attentive. The wine on tap was good. I had a Chardonnay and Malbec. My husband had a Coke, he said it was excellent.🤣 For appetizers my husband got the wedge. Huge thick slice of bacon on top, lots of eggs and the blue cheese dressing was mild. He enjoyed it. I got the sardines. The description sounded better than it was, way too much flavoring. The bread was too thick along with the spread which was very lemony. The Sardines were good but totally lost their flavor from the spread and bread. My husband got the butchers cut steak and loved it. Cooked perfectly! I got the lamb steak which the waiter said they cook it medium. It arrived rare. The waiter saw it immediately and took it back. Came back MR. the Salsa verde was a very heavy. I could not taste the lamb so I scraped it off. Our sides were the smashed potatoes were fantastic along with the creamed spinach.
Definitely will go back. I think it’s a good group place to go, very fun!

Listen!

Staff: Super accomodating everyone seemed to be pleasant, not in a creepy way or reminiscent of the South, but in the "hey, I'm not mad working here, i dig my coworkers" vibe. it was the overall comraderie for me.

Our server, Carlos. extremely exceptional; mans ( i don't know their preferred pronouns, so i'm giving the Brit TopBoy pronoun) was attentive to detail, personable; with a pleasing disposition which seemed to be the vibe, which, once again is what I got from every person; manager, bartender, busperson - all good vibes.

The food: bonkers. The biscuits are addictive little pillows of buttery goodness; dense, flaky, and not a game. We had lamb and swordfish from the bigs (menu), solid cocktail and mocktail, pan-fried mashed potato, little gem salad, and the grilled sweet potato. Dessert was mango sorbet and the newly added chocolate cake with sea salt, all dope. This is one of those places that you either, intentionally downplay because you always want to have a table and not too long of a wait or you tip insanely well so they know you're good people and won't have you standing too long. Had I had a fistful of 100s, I would have walked around sans Oprah handing out big faces.

Lengthy review shortened; eat here, order the biscuits, ask for a to-go bag because the portions are serious. Price point is palatable given that the fare doesn't disappoint.

Very good food, amazing biscuits, steaks, fish and chicken. Unfortunately, either a sign of the times for the restaurant industry in being under staffed (no fault of their own) or inexperienced staff, or both, the service was beyond painful. Our waiter was inattentive, forgot part of our order, and had a look of deer in the headlights or partially not coherent. Disappointing given that this is not a cheap priced restaurant. Will give it another shot in a few months.
