St. Anselm - DC
Biscuits and crab dip special were amazing. The wine list is very broad and impressive. All the entrees were very good as well as the vegetable sides. Loved the mushrooms, the pork and the mambo sauce that came with the crispy chicken.
St Anselm is found in an ex industrial area to become juicy and exciting. The resto is göres t, with nice ambiance and good value for money. The maitre du cave was super knowledgeable and charming.
I understand St. Anselm is known for its grill, and as expected the meats were excellent, but (perhaps because it was less expected) the fruit and vegetable appetizers and sides really stole the show. The staff was universally friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. We went for an anniversary dinner, but I can imagine any occasion (or none at all) being a good time to enjoy St. Anselm.
Fantastic as always!
We had a fantastic experience. Our server, Abby, was energetic, efficient, and so polite. The food was delicious - everything was as expected. And my steak was cooked perfectly - a rarity these days. The Sommelier, Vanessa, was a star as well. She made sure we always had the proper glassware for every wine that was opened. All-in-all, just a perfect experience and I cannot wait to return.
This place is excellent! Wonderful food and service. Decor is enjoyable to look at. Noise level like most restaurants these days was a too high.
Mike our waiter was nice and explained the menu well. The food was great and we enjoyed a nice intimate booth. The salmon was delicious and the carrot cake was delightful. Biscuits were amazing.
St Anselm is consistently one of the best restaurants in this city. Our server was also fantastic today. I normally go for dinner and was thrilled to have brunch there. So damn good!
Great vibe and really good food! The prices could be a little lower, but I would definitely go again!
Terrific evening—exceptional service throughout the evening and delicious food (Rockfish was the standout, but steaks all great). Was a bit noisy—Turning down the music a bit could help foster better conversation. Overall a fun night out!
Been here 6 times now. Modern, youthful, and chic steakhouse. Does not feel like the standard DC stuffy steak place. The ax handle is a must if you have enough people to share with. Specific shout out for the wine list and the friendly on point sommelier/wine buyer, Vanessa.
So good. We keep going back for brunch because it’s so good. Need to come back for dinner soon. Could be a few more options for the pescatarians, but the food is amazing.
We had a brunch with our friends. St. Anslem is a neighborhood best kept secret!
St Anselm was absolutely amazing! The food was incredible and service simply perfect. We will absolutely be coming back.
Second visit to St. Anselm and was thrilled once again. Biscuits and deviled eggs were great appetizers. Steak done to perfection! Doesn't get any better than this!
Love this restaurant! By far the best dining experience I’ve had! Every dish was delicious and beautifully presented. The restaurant atmosphere was warm and charming. Divine aromas, upon entering, carry you off into a blissful land of biscuits, herbs, meat, and potatoes. All’s well that eats well.
Best service! LOVED the biscuits, skirt steak and rockfish too. I could do without the garden green salad (basic flavor).
St. Anselm was recommended by a friend and I'm so glad I trusted my friend. The setting is edgy and hip, parking is easy. From the beautiful smile from the hostess at the front door, to fab table with a view, to interesting and engaged server, and delightful eclectic decor, my husband and I were impressed. Then the food started coming and we were very happy. We stuck with appetizers only and were never disappointed. Don't not do the buttermilk biscuits with pimiento cheese. The kampachi crudo, lamb tartare, oysters and monster prawn were equally as outstanding. The food is unpretentious and allowed to shine for the simplicity in which it is prepared. When we go back, because we will again and again, we'll go with larger appetites to enjoy the delicious looking entrees that landed on tables all around us. Well done, St. Anselm, well done.
great place. Food was very good but they should really consider reducing the amount of butter that they deluge there serving w at this place. Again, food is good, don't kill it w all that butter.
Most of what we ordered was quite good, and the buttermilk biscuits were extraordinary, but there were a couple of misses as well. For instance, one appetizer, the Shrimp & Grilled Cuttlefish with cucumber, avocado, and Thai basil was a watery mess that was not at all what we expected. I also felt the steaks (Prime Ribeye and Skirt) were OK, but not great when compared to BLT Steak and Bourbon Steak, both of which excel in flavor and preparation. Having said this, St. Anselm does most things very well and I'd have no issues returning again.
We had a wonderful dining experience at St. Anselm! The servers were attentive, but not overly so. The ambiance was very interesting, with a warehouse vibe, but decorated in an eclectic style, which made it entertaining to pick out all the quirky design elements. The food was outstanding and very creative. The biscuits, which came with a pimento cheese spread, were yummy and brought up childhood memories. The steak was amazing and the side dishes were delicious and very creative. While I had requested my steak to be cooked at a medium temperature, it arrived only being cooked medium rare. I was concerned that if it was sent back, it would have been overcooked, but this place knows how to cook a steak because it came back perfectly cooked to a medium temperature! The management was attentive as well, given the issue with the steak being undercooked, and they even entertained our questions about the restaurant and its history.
I highly recommend experiencing St. Anselm...because they truly know how to treat their customers!
The food was good, but not good enough to justify the price. All steaks were ordered medium-rare and were delivered raw. Had already been sliced into so were unable to re-fire. Bummer.
St Anselm never disappoints. Service is top rate. It is best to sit at the counter. Observe how this organization works like a fine-tuned engine. It may appear chaos at first glance. But look closely how each staffer knows their role. Notice the team work. And the meticulous focus on quality control of the plates before they land in front of their guests. An absolute joy to watch. And the food — divine.
we sat at 8:30 and did not get our salads until 9:30. our first visit was great. this visit not as much.
Cannot find anything negative to say about our visit. Food was excellent (esp. the biscuits and cauliflower). Service was also amazing - friendly, attentive, knowledgeable. I can't wait to go back!
Service was super friendly and efficient. Food was amazing, definitely going back!
We had a 90th birthday dinner for my mom at St. Anselm and it was perfect! From making the reservations (there were 7 of us), to the service, to the food - couldn't ask for a better place to celebrate. I emailed the restaurant in advance of our dinner to tell them about our special circumstances and received an immediate response. We were seated in a smaller room - though it wasn't requested it was much better for Mom's hearing. Each of us had different meals and they were all delicious. Absolutely everything was perfect. Casual setting with high class service. Highly, highly recommend.
I thought the restaurant was aesthetically pleasing, and had a very nice ambiance. The service provided was also good, though, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the waiter claimed the Butcher Steak would be "as tender as the filet, but with much more flavor." This was certainly not the case, and the steak was also prepared much different than what had been requested by my friend, and fellow diner - very rare vice the requested medium.
Lastly, I found my steak, the NY Strip, to be a rather disappointing cut of meat, as well. I don't think I've ever had a NY Strip at a restaurant with so much fat that parts were inedible. Sure, if you pick up a NY Strip at a random grocery store and cook it yourself, you may encounter such a situation, but I've never encountered such a situation at a restaurant. That being said, I did very much enjoy the biscuits as an appetizer/starter, and would recommend those to anybody dining at this restaurant.
However, I would not recommend attending this restaurant if you want a fine, restaurant-quality steak.
We loved this restaurant. Everything about it was right and good: the food, the service (thank you, Kylie, for being so knowledgeable and excited about your suggestions) and the value. We had the curried chicken liver mousse with extra bread (server’s idea) and fresh mixed berry jam. Then we had the iceberg lettuce with blue cheese and egg+ the biggest, fattiest bacon strip ever. We could have split this. Delish. My husband’s steak was perfectly cooked and succulent. I had the lamb merguez which I liked, but the eggplant underneath was a strange, off-putting color of green. Altogether, though, a delightful experience.
I brought my in-laws to dine at St. Anselm. This past weekend, I brought my girlfriend from Springfield VA. Any place as amazing as St. Anselm is worth the drive. Always a good time.
Definitely in my top 5 DC restaurants, and certainly my favorite place to get a steak. I like it blue and it is always perfection at St. Anselm. Plus I'd kill for those biscuits.
Service was 👌👌👌👌👌
We had wonderful service for our first time at St. Anselm. Our waiter was very attentive and gave great recommendations. Food was quick but very delicious. My only complaint would be the noise level, at some points it was hard to hear from across the table. Otherwise a wonderful experience. Will definitely be returning!!
Food was incredible, service was friendly, just be warned that the restaurant is loud and may pose an issue for those hard of hearing.
If I could eat here every night of the week I would.
Exceeded expectations. Food was delicious, service outstanding and ambiance bustling with energy. Well done.
Great dining experience
Cool spot w great food and drink
Wish could be less noisy but fun
Loved the food and service!
Wonderful tasty menu options and super fast service.
Everything ordered was excellent. Service was impeccable. Will definitely return when I’m back in town.
