Contemporary American
Located in the Union Market neighborhood, the second outpost of Joe Carroll’s popular NYC restaurant aims to bring some of the laid back vibes of Brooklyn to Washington, DC. St. Anselm is an American tavern devoted to the pleasures of grilled meats and great ingredients simply cooked. While steak is a specialty, the creativity of Chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley doesn’t stop there. Delicious food, eclectic wines (some on tap), and classic cocktails set the tone for a great experience. Paired with friendly service in an unpretentious setting adorned with quirky décor, dining at St Anselm is the total package.

Great place for grilled meats. Unique sides and small plates. Incredible wine list

Do not sleep on St. A's. The atmosphere and service alone are amazing. Couple that with the food and drink and you have a home run! A great flashback to a old school American tavern. I recommend the biscuits and pimiento cheese app. The NY Strip and BoBo chicken are delicious. Do not leave without getting the ice cream cake. We will definitely be going back.

Our server was very good. Forgot to get his name but white male, glasses, facial hair, partner works for nestle. Very knowledgeable of the menu and great at being hospitable. Food was very good, biscuits were crazy good. Would definitely go again. Thanks

We enjoyed our visit for brunch - the service was friendly and timely, the food was good but nothing special, the monkey bread was served cold (on purpose?), and the restaurant didn’t acknowledge the special occasion (birthday) in any way.

I got the lamb sirloin and my boyfriend got the butchers steak, and overall we had the most incredible experience. Every bite seemed to bring out the essence of the ingredients. Highly recommend.

Relaxed, quirky atmosphere. Delicious food!! Some of the lightest fried potatoes I’ve ever tasted and bottomless coffee. Fabulous service and decent value (especially for DC). Will go back again and will bring friends.

Couldn’t have asked for a better strip steak, but service was intrusive for my taste—lots of people stopping by to ask if was enjoying my meal. Then when I was finished eating, it took forever for the server to bring the check.

Recommend requesting a booth. Meats are excellent and an outstanding selection of liquors, especially Madeiras. Great wine list as well. We enjoyed the casual ambience and still able to get exceptional food.

Great meal, perfect wine recommendations and fantastic service. Server Megan made some excellent recommendations and on a very busy night did not hesitate at all to let us linger in a prime booth with a final round of cocktails. Well done, will definitely come back.

We had reservations yet still had to wait for 20 minutes to be seated. This is my biggest pet peeve at restaurants. Decor is strange - the banners made me think of prep schools. Food was fine and table service was good, but first impressions set by the less than accommodating hostess staff have ensured that I won't be back.

It’s not a big deal but if you can’t offer “special requests” then don’t have a section that asks for them. I really like the booths so I thought requesting one 3+ weeks out wouldn’t be an issue. When we arrived, I was told there wasn’t any available. It’s not the end of the world but I thought that’s what the special request section was for.

Great restaurant...good food, good service, and reasonably priced. There were 6 of us. We ordered 2 bottles of wine, also reasonably priced, and tasted just about everything on the menu. My favorite was the lamb and I don't even like lamb, unless I am eating at St Anselm! If I had a complaint it would be that it was so noisy we couldn't hear the people at the other end of the table.

The food was incredible. We had the buttermilk biscuits, cauliflower, pan-fried mashed potatoes, blue crab deviled eggs, and flatiron steak - all were inventive and tasty. Service was attentive. The place was buzzing for a Monday night. The only downside was our reservation was pushed back a half hour because of a bottleneck, but management made up for it by apologizing profusely and giving us deviled eggs on the house.

My wife and I dined for Sunday lunch. Pros: The deviled eggs; fruit salad; lamb tenderloin; and steak somewhat inattentive service. Bonus: great decor; eclectic plate-ware; and fantastically broad wine menu.

It was the first of hopefully many forthcoming visits for us, with dinner a more attractive option as that wine list needs to be pursued vigorously!

This place ROCK's! The food was so delicious, very unique. If you want an experience, this is the place. A bit pricey but so worth it. The wines are super beautiful as well. I've been to so many restaurants in the DMV area and this by far my top rated restaurant. Took hubby for his birthday, he loved it!

Great food and wine list. Great atmosphere if not a little too loud and cramped at the tables. Request a booth for a little more room. Food was excellent, had the deviled eggs which were very tasty and a good start. The scallops were also good but a drop off from the eggs. The butchers steak was the absolute star of the night. Melts in your mouth. The lamb not as good, just a bit overcooked, masked by the salsa verde. Ice cake was a fun end to the dinner, all in very good and worth the visit.

I took my POC at an important European client company to St. Anselm, and it was just the perfect place. He wanted meat, but didn't want to go to the typical DC corporate steakhouse. The food at St. Anslem was very good, the service was engaging, and the price point was just right. Most important, my guest enjoyed experiencing the upscale young professional vibe at St. Anselm.
