St. Anselm - DC
I visited St. Anselm for the first time to celebrate an anniversary. I had visited all of chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley's previous restaurants in DC but thought St. Anselm was the best yet. Both the food and service were phenomenal. I was especially impressed with the variety of dishes (biscuits, oysters, steak, etc.) that were each perfectly cooked.
The lamb was delicious. The biscuits were delicious. I didn't like the pimento cheese spread.
Friendly staff and thoughtful menu. Just the right balance of hearty and foodie. I had the best ‘porterhouse’ porkchop ever- w chutney (not quite enough of it) and an amazing craft Amaro cocktail (which the server took away before I was done with it). Both small missteps in an otherwise bright and lip smacking dinner.
Lamb sirloin and salads were excellent, but everything else was too salty
Super hipster decor replete with taxidermy and overly wooded everything.
We had a wonderful dinner at St. Anselm. The food was great, and the services was terrific - knowledgeable, friendly, casual but professional.
I appreciate the many wine by the glass options as well as half bottle choices.
I would love to come back with a large group in order to try the many side dishes as well as tackle a large axe handle.
Looking forward to returning soon!
Let me start by saying the food was terrific. Highlights were the melt in your mouth butcher's steak, crab dip (off menu/special), and the light and airy biscuits. Tuna steak was also good but a bit lacking in flavor. Ice cream cake was massive and good but felt more like something you'd get at Applebee's than a Stephen Starr restaurant.
Our server was a complete disaster. He alternated between uninterested and unavailable to creepily hovering over us. We were starving when we sat down and attempted to order appetizers but he refused, saying we should order everything at once because otherwise there could be a lag between the courses. He then went on to explain in detail how food ordering and subsequent delivery worked. It was so bizarre (uhhh, we've dined a restaurant before) and he was just generally really pompous. We told him we understood that there could be a delay and that we wanted to order our apps right away and he made no effort at hiding his contempt. Later in the meal, he hovered unapologetically, clearly wanting us to finish our wine and leave. At that point, we were so annoyed by him, we were happy to oblige.
Fabulous experience- great vibe, excellent food. Another Stephan Starr success.
We had an awesome server (Jason) who went above and beyond! The entire staff was very friendly and welcoming! It seems like a fun place to work!
So good - the biscuits with pimiento literally melted in our mouths. Drinks and everything else we had were equally delicious.
Food here is pretty amazing. But, pretentious staff can be distracting for a laid-back night.
As always, a real treat. Superb wine list. The chilled section rocks!
Everything was okay, just okay: service by main waiter was spotty, food was good but not great, very loud. All other staff (bartender, water service, host) very good. Overall disappointed based on reviews and what one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber and cost.
Great food, great ambiance . The staff is amazing and made our night very special. From Germaine at the front to our very knowledgeable sommelier everyone was fantastic. Abigail , our waitress was just fantastic.
We will be back for sure.
Excellent service. Great atmosphere. Vast wine selection. Food very good. Go when it is not crowded.
Ambiance and decor of St. Anselm is superb, however, the food left much to be desired. We ordered the bobo chicken and mackerel. The chicken is prepared and served with head and feet attached. Not the most appealing looking. It also tasted slighted undercooked. The mackerel was also served very undercooked; however, management was great and provided another good option. Overall, I would go there again...but only for drinks since I don’t eat red meat, pork or lamb.
Just overall amazing! Will be back soon!
This was a lovely place to enjoy a casual but nice birthday dinner. We enjoyed two delicious steaks and very good creamed spinach, but the real star of the show was the beef fat roasted potatoes. Please do not leave this restaurant without trying them; they are outstanding!
The only thing I do not recommend is the ice cream cake. Admittedly it’s an odd venue in which to order such a thing, but it seemed like a festive choice. I was disappointed that what we got was a glorified Fudgy the Whale, which might earn nostalgia points for some but didn’t suit me.
The food was great and the service was on point with one exception. We had to stop 4 people from trying to clear a plate we were not finished with. One back server mentioned they'd been directed by a manager to clear. I appreciate aggressively staying on top of tables, but more communication would help the dining experience. However, our server did a phenomenal job of reading us, pacing appropriately, marking, and making it a seamless dining experience. Full marks! I'll definitely be back.
So happy that this restaurant is offering brunch. I was somewhat disappointed with the Norwegian Salmon benedict as the english muffin was toasted so much it was impossible to cut through them. Consider using the biscuts as an alternative.
Love coming back here every time!
We decided to celebrate our anniversary at St. Anselm after eagerly waiting several months to try it. We were SO DISAPPOINTED by the restaurant. I'll start by saying our server, Thannia, was wonderful and all the staff we interacted with were very pleasant and helpful. But we could not be more disappointed in the whole experience, especially after deciding to celebrate a special occasion there.
First, it was incredibly loud and the tables are insanely close together. We spent at least a quarter of the meal with a staff member's butt in our faces because there is simply no other place for them to stand to tend to the neighboring tables (and that's not their fault!), being reached over because there's no other way for them to serve your table, or shuffling items on our table to try to make space just to eat.
Second, while the appetizers were just fine, fine is pretty disappointing when you're having a special dinner (and one that is a little bit of a splurge for us). The lamb tartar tasted overwhelmingly of mint--if there was some other flavor in there, I could not possibly tell you. The biscuits were delicious, but $200++ is an awful lot to pay for a meal where biscuits are the star (particularly when my grandma will make better biscuits fo' free).
Finally, I ordered my steak medium, which in my experience tends to get you something medium rare or medium well and either is fine for me. When I received my steak it was rare (like actively dumping blood onto the plate rare) and charred to bits on the outside. This was the only time I've ever sent food back. After waiting another 15 minutes, I received an overcooked, clearly just re-microwaved on the plate [$25] steak that was too tough to eat. At this point I was so over it and disappointed by the entire experience that I just asked them to wrap it up so we could bail on the whole thing. The sides were nothing special--if ya order grilled broccoli, you're just getting basic grilled broccoli.
Great service and the place looks like it’s been there for decades.
We bought our 3 and 7 year old and they enjoyed the food too.
Excellent menu choices. The biscuits on the starters menu were the best I’ve had in many years. So good i save mine and had it for dessert.
Nice relaxed atmosphere, friendly nonintrusive service, great food but a little pricey. Nice beer and wine selection. We'll be back.
Our favorite new spot! A cozy spot that is kid friendly.
We were well attended throughout our meal. Food was delicious.
Biscuits were great but some of the other dishes were super salty - cucumber salad, lamb sirloin, and the steak was a little salty too.
The butchers steak was absolutely exquisite, among the best I've had. And the steak fries were perfect, crisp on outside, fluffy on inside. Salads and sides were good too, but the meat is the main attraction.
Excellent food. High quality ingredients, creative preparation (cauliflower!), perfectly cooked entrees. Nothing avant-garde so the menu has wide appeal. The only turn-off Is the noise level as it's extremely loud.
Food is awesome, but the cauliflower was a miss. It is a very loud place. Overall, excellent food and definitely worth a return visit.
Fantastic service combined with simply delicious food - not to mention amazing wines !!
Outstanding! My new favorite restaurant in DC. Definitely order the biscuits, the salmon collar, the truffle potatoes, and the flank steak. Service was note-perfect. I wanted for nothing!
Interesting menu. Great service and atmosphere. Don’t miss salmon cheeks!
Much more than a steakhouse. Outstanding service without stuffiness.
Enjoyed a wonderful New Year's dinner. Saw the chef conversing with friends at the bar and even though I am a chef aficionado, I did not embarrass my husband by trying to get her attention or address her. Abigail, our server was phenomenal. She made suggestions that perfectly complimented the meal. It was as if she knew us :-) We wanted to experience as much of the menu as we could. She timed everything perfectly ans never made us feel rushed. We started with the deviled eggs with blue crab. They were absolutely sublime. The crab was so sweet! I was thinking what else can you do to a deviled egg, I now have the answer. We moved on to the biscuits with pimento cheese, just because we had to. We could only handle one. We split it and the restaurant was kind enough to wrap up the rest. The pimento cheese was excellent. The biscuits were light and fluffy. I am not a biscuit person, they almost made me a convert. We moved onto the iceberg wedge salad, iceberg salad; with a large slice of heritage bacon blue cheese dressing on the side. We share the crab leg and the monster prawn. Both were mouthwatering. It was seafood at the next level. We were both fairly full. My husband had a sliver of his rib-eye. It was cooked just right and was delicious. I had the salmon collar. This was unlike any salmon I have ever enjoyed. I have had salmon many times, prepared many different ways, this was phenomenal! I can't wait to go back and try it again. We had quite to to go bag, nicely prepared by Abigail. We took a piece of carrot cake with us to enjoy later when we were no quite so full. Will definitely be back. The quality of the food was distinguishable and memorable.
We made a last-minute reservation at St Anselm for brunch and we were not disappointed. The service and food exceeded expectations. We hope to return to sample the dinner menu!
The meal was exceptional and Jason, server, was great! He really took care of us. We went on New Years Eve and the ambiance was energetic. It was a great place to ring in the new year. We will definitely be going back!
Food was out of this world. Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. It was a great dining experience.
Great food and our waiter Palmer was excellent
