What Insiders Are Saying
Fancy fine dining, San Francisco style. Bring your elders.
The Spruce environment is high class. The restaurant is beautiful, and many servers take care of you, rather formally. The food looks great--presented beautifully with flowers and arranged artistically. BUT, the food was good, but not exciting. And the portions on several items were ridiculously tiny. The prix fixe lunch menu included a salad. The salad filled less than half of the small plate. The included melon had 2 or 3 pieces slightly bigger than a sugar cube. The greens included 2 leaves the size of a thumbnail. There were about 4 rings of cucumber. It looked great, but it's hard to imagine why they would serve such a small salad.
We had the chicken salad, which came with three good sized pieces of grilled chicken breast. The chicken was dry and I'll venture to say it was cooked quite a bit ahead of time.
The staff were all very nice and made us feel comfortable. I don't see a real need to eat lunch at such a la-dee-da establishment with high prices when the food is good, but not exciting, and looks much better than it tastes.
Exceptional brunch. A good friend visiting from out of town...we had a gift card, but had never experienced the restaurant, so you never know what to expect. Wowsers! Everything we ordered was off the charts in terms of presentation and flavor, and the service was among the best we have ever experienced. Kudos to Spruce...we'll be back.
Spruce is now my go-to place for special occasion lunches. It’s a beautiful space, food is VERY well prepared, service is on par with French Laundry. During the week they offer a tasting menu with optional wine pairing as well as a la carte that includes their famous hamburger. Their greyhound is, in my option, the best in town. Most importantly, one can converse there. I must emphasize that my comments pertain to my Spruce lunch experiences. My one dinner experience was not one I care to re-experience. Too many tables squeezed into the fireside room and the service was understaffed. It was a stressful, subpar experience and certainly not worth the money. But lunches and brunches are wonderful.
As an aside, I have taken a Spruce cooking class. They know good food and attentive preparation.
Wonderful experience at SPRUCE. The duck main course may have been the best I have ever had. Our server was Remy and he was very good and very nice. We would ask for him again. I highly recommend and would say it is presently one of the very best in San Francisco.
We went for the Burgers and they were awesome! Will definitely go back for the rest of the menu!
Fantastic from start to finish!
Best duck I have ever had.
Very comfortable and outstanding service.
The duck was fabulous as was the coconut rice pudding - gluten and dairy free- and wine by the glass recommendations were superb. Spruce doesn’t miss.
Wonderful restaurant! Excellent service, the food was unbelievable - beautifully plated, amazing taste, and perfect portions as well. I highly recommend this place!
Spruce is one of my #1 favorite ❤️ restaurants in San Francisco!!! I love it! 10 years - my top choice to dine out with friends & the family 😋
Wonderful food and excellent service
Out of town guests visiting.
Excellent service. My wife and I had heard good reviews of this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Tables are spaced nicely so you don't have to hear conservations from tables nearby.
A fabulous meal at a fabulous restaurant. I had two appetizers: corn veloute, burrara with naan and fruit. Both were superb. I had halibut as an entree and two desserts. Service was impeccable.
Neither my friend nor I could believe that the only iced tea you can offer is black tea. So disappointing.
We were celebrating my wife’s birthday. The food was superb and the service stellar.
Fantastic time at Spruce. Celebrated a birthday and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. Can’t fully describe in words how much I love this place.
Ask for Sarah. A real professional server. Great.
A perfect spot for a birthday celebration. We love Spruce!
Great experience, great service and delicious food!
Superb, as always!
The excellent food was only outmatched by the excellent service. I highly recommend Spruce.
This is such a wonderful place. The people who work there (literally everyone) is warm, gracious in their duties and fantastic. The food was perfection, as always.
Spruce is now our "go to" place in the city! With all of the great restaurants San Francisco has to offer, this one NEVER fails to impress!!! The food is creatively conceived, artistically presented, and served with knowledge, flair and enthusiasm. Every aspect of the dining experience demonstrates respect for the customer and profession, alike. Bravo, Team Spruce!!!
Excellent, the food was great.
The service was the best
the selection was good
Selected Spruce because of location and ambiance. Food was well prepared and waiter split plates we wanted to share. Sound level is great as one can actually have a conversation without yelling. Only complaint was the choice of background music didn’t fit the scene.
Our server was terrible. He took forever and did not get the orders correct. I've had good experiences in the past. They did not seem well prepared for Father's Day brunch.
My granddaughter and I celebrate our shared Bdays here every year. It never disappoints!
Wonderful experience celebrating 2 birthdays !
Everyone enjoyed the evening from start to finish! Our out of town friends took special notice and expressed they’d likely return on their next trip! Thank you!!!
I have always enjoyed Spruce. This time we arrived for a 115 reservation at 125 pm and had to wait since our table was not ready. After we were seated took the waitress about 15 min to get our order. This was a business lunch so we needed to move fast. I ordered the Modesto Chicken Salad - chicken breast was too tough. I can do this more tender rather than chewy and rubbery. Cook probably left it on the burner for too long. I have had their burger previously and it was awesome. So skip the chicken - they are not quite there yet on that one. Mostly quiet so great for conversations and serious discussions
Overpriced. Didn’t digest the chicken because of the heavy condiment (let alone the price). Very few wines under 80$ a bottle. The City has so much more to offer these days at that price. However tables and seats are spacious, which is rare in San Francisco
Outstanding experience with friends sharing a celebratory meal. The food was excellent and the service took it to the next level. A delightful dining experience! Recommended
Daughter’s first job.
Brunch on Sunday with family was awesome
very sedate place to have brunch with friends. Menu has something for everyone.
Best pancakes ever!
We loved this place for celebrating our wedding anniversary! Great service and great food!
Lots of misses and hits. The setting is beautiful, the food was delicious, the wine selection and service was outstanding and there is clearly a level of professionalism you’d expect in a restaurant of this caliber. However there were some glaring shortfalls. The service was spotty. An entree came out of the kitchen lukewarm. It was replaced and came out hot with a small soup given while we were waiting, but this should not happen it a Michelin starred establishment. While the deserts were excellent, the coffee was undrinkable. Bitter and cold. After 5 minutes of trying to find our server, a busboy kindly volunteered you help. I will say the wine service was great. The somm did a great job steering my through the vast list.
I’m not trying to be nit picky but an establishment of this caliber should not disappoint on so many little things. Perhaps it was an off night, but I won’t be back to find out.
