Spruce Ratings and Reviews
Fairly good. Great ambiance, great service, food was good, but not good enough to warrant the price tag. Dinner portions were not very big, the gnocchi had at most 10 piece, which wouldn't have mattered if they were perfectly cooked and they had flavorful truffles, but they weren't and didn't. They charged $9.95 for flat water at our table of two, when given the option of flat or sparkling. Overall, it fits the neighborhood of being a nice venue and high priced food, but there are a lot better places in SF that you can find that match that price level.
Food was outstanding - I have been here multiple times and always have enjoyed the consistently enjoyable dishes (especially the steak tartare and burger). The service is also timely and professional, with water being regularly refilled and an amuse bouche presented every time that I have dined there. However, we were charged for a glass of wine (that cost ~$33!) that we didn't have - when we called to explain the issue, we were informed that the table next to us ordered the wine and didn't have to pay, lucky them! We are glad that it was corrected, but this is an unfortunate oversight that should not have happened (especially considering the price of the wine). Will definitely return.
My husband and I went on a date here and had a fabulous meal. Everything wash delicious from start to finish. I had salmon, he had steak. The wine was amazing. They accommodated my dietary restrictions happily and graciously. Service was so friendly and attentive. Can’t say enough about them.
Might have been an off night but for a $650 meal I would have expected a bit better.
They forgot an course
One steak was raw vs. med
Never refilled our wine glasses
Again maybe just an off night but was disappointed.
We love Spruce. We celebrated our 50th anniversary last year with a dinner for 24 in the private dining room. I did notice a big uptick in the menu pricing. In fact, everything we were offered as menu additions were very very expensive. Still, it's a special place and great for a special evening.
Very good food and atmosphere. Burgers reputed to be among the best in SF. Well deserved reputation there. Service ok, but not great. $50 corkage fee not ok. Over the top and exorbitantly priced wine list. Overall, I would go back but would stick with salads, burgers, beer and desserts.
came to spruce for a special-occasion lunch. while i have dined at the restaurant for brunch and dinner, this was my first time for lunch. was very excited about a cozy and holiday-centric atmosphere. the bubbly and burgers were their usual amazing selves, but the only salad option was not a home run - it was missing cohesion and balance. and with this being my first lunchtime experience, i was saddened that the customary amuse bouche and post-meal treat were not a part of the meal. another first? our waiter automatically served us $10 bottled water.
Came here for brunch in the city with the husband. The bartender was really great! She helped the hubby out with some tips on a cocktail he was trying to perfect at home. Thanks again! The food was outstanding... fois gras on pancakes... heck yes! Such an enjoyable visit. We will be back on another trip into the city. Maybe for dinner so we can really enjoy some of the incredible reds on the wine list!
The restaurant is upscale with tablecloths and lovely. I drop in for lunch with friends or a snack at the bar . So because it is delicious and a lovely dining room I booked for a special evening . BAD idea the waiter seemed to think we were invisible . We waited for 20 min after we received water . He did not give us the bar menu although other tables were enjoying the fabulous burgers ! We had to ask ! He just kept ignoring us although there were plenty of other wait staff and other tables seemed to not be sitting with water only . I suggest insisting on a side table they seemed happy and recognized . I suggest somehow being open to telling the nice greeter that something is wrong . The wine expert never came to our table . The waiter just kept disappearing Somehow it seems that you might have to be a usual customer to have the welcoming that the restaurant design and greeting staff project ! Anyway the wine is good; the burgers are great and there is a kind attentive staff at lunch . We had well thought out and delicious entrees when we were finally able to order .
Food was excellent and the three of us could hear each other speak. That's the good thing. The bad thing is that the waiter was all over us all the time until we ordered. One of my friends is fussy about wine. After the waiter said to him "Take your time" he kept coming back and hovering. Really aggravating.
We have dined at Spruce for multiple times since it was open more than a decade ago. The interiors of the restaurant is just timeless. The service is always spot on. The bar makes great cocktails.
The food is always good. Unfortunately, this past experience lost a bar. I understand it is the truffle season. However, not everyone buys the truffles. When the menu is overwhelmed with truffles, it is a turn off. Most of the restaurants do not put much effort on the vegetarian dishes. Throwing in a pasta dish as the vegetarian dish, it is not very appealing. My vegetarian had to pick two appetizers as the meal. I had the duck breast. I'd say good but not exciting. The meat is tender but lack of the duck flavor. The beignet is the best of the whole meal, besides the cocktail.
We felt very rushed with the food delivery, which made us believe that they were more interested in turning the table over than making sure we had a wonderful dinning experience. Our server was very good, so we are not blaming her for the rushed feeling.
AFTER READING OTHER REVIEWS, I WENT TO THIS RESTAURANT WITH GREAT TREPIDATION.
MY INITIAL IMPRESSIONS BEGAN TO DISSPELL THIS APPREHENSION.
THE RESTAURANT WAD BEAUTIFUL AND SERENE, IF UNDERWHELMING.
AND THEN THE DINNER STARTED.
AT FIRST EVRYTHING WAS COOL AND THEN IT ALL GOT A LITTLE RUSHED, AND THEN I LOOKED AT THE PRICES (BEFORE THE SF MARK-UPS) AND THEY WERE PRETTY BREATHTAKING; AND THEN THE SPECIALS WERE RECITED, SOME WITH PRICES AND THEY WERE ASTRONOMICAL--WAGU STEAK $138--WOW!), AND THE ONES THAT WEREN'T QUOTED WERE LEFT UNSAID FOR A GOOD REASON--HAVING BEEN SO GAUCHE ENOGH TO INJQUIRE; AND THEN THE WINE LIST WAS PERUSED--GAWD!,, AGAIN, PRIOR TO SF MARKUPS--HARD TO FIND ANYTHING UNDER $100.
AND THEN THE RUSH SET IN--HURRY ORDER...
AND THEN THE FOOD STARTED.
THE AMUSE WAS LITERALLY DROPPED OFF IN VERY UNATTRACTIVE CONTAINERS, AND CONSISTED OF A FAIRLY TASTELES CHEESEPUFF AND --AND I DO NOT KID HERE- A GRAHAM CRACKER/NUTBUTTER SANDWICH.
AND THEN AS TABLES FILLED UP THERE SEEMED TO BE MORE WAITSTAFF MILLING ABOU THAN CUSTOMERS AND YET WE HAD DIFFICULTY FROM HERE ON OUT GETTING ANY KIND OF DECENT SERVICE AT ALL--INCLUDING SIMPLY GETTING CREAM FOR OUR TWO COFFEE DRINKERS-WHO, BY THE TIME IT FINALLY FOUND ITS WAY OVER, THEN NEEDED TO GET SOMEONE'S ATTENTION TO NOW PROVIDE REPLACEMENT HOT COFFEE--YES, IT HAD TAKEN THAT LONG.
ANYHOW THE MEAL FOR FOUR WITH ONE DESSERT AND ONE OF THE LEAST COSTLY, BUT PASSABLE, WINES WAS ABOVE $600--LUCKILY I HAD A GIFT CERITIFICATE--WHICH CREATED FURTHER CONFUSION AND EXTENDED DELAYS.
BY THE TIME WE REACHED OUR CAR, THANK GOD FOR STREET PARKING WE AVOIDED VALET CHARGES; I WANTED TO CALL MY BANK AND MAKE SURE NO UN WARRANTED CHARGES HAD BEEN ASSESSED WHILE I HAD BEEN PREOPCCUPIED BY SUCH A STUNNING EXPERIENCE.
I TRULY FELT I HAD BEEN TAKEN TO THE CLEANERS AND NOT "ONE OF THE FINEST ESTAURANTS" IN SAN FRANCISCO.
ON YEAH, THE FOOD WAS OK.
