What Insiders Are Saying
Fancy fine dining, San Francisco style. Bring your elders.
We had a great time at Spruce. They made sure to take care of my husband for his birthday and they gave us the best recommendations. We had a fantastic dinner and will definitely return.
Disappointing. Good food, great cocktails and fabulous wine, but our server was really poor. We waited almost 30 minutes before our order was taken (and even then we had to get someone's attention to come over), and that was just the start of it. Our second wine order didn't arrive, there was very little attentiveness and then a dessert cropped up on the bill that we didn't even order, let alone receive! Such a shame, because the rest of the staff was great. Definitely would not go back - especially for price.
Rude waiter who actually was physically threatening in his demeanor. Made us feel very uncomfortable. Will NOT go back here. Completely unacceptable behavior.
I was slightly concerned about the lack of vegetarian main dishes and when I voiced my dietary restrictions to the waiter, he immediately got word to the chef! They quickly concocted several options that were designed to delight and exceed all expectations. This restaurant and its staff are the most exquisite gems in a most exquisite neighborhood.
We’ve eaten at a lot of really great restaurants in our days and this is up there in the top 10!
Dining room is lovely and very comfortable. Easy to talk with your dinner guests. Service was nice, but the portion sizes of the dishes were a total joke! The gem salad was tiny teeny and the 2 miniature pieces were unattractive platted with nothing else. 2 bites and you were done. The omelette looked like it was taken off of United Airlines and served on a plate. It was very thin about 4 inches long and 1 inch wide with an unappealing slice of Brie sitting on top. The hamburger was very small as well but unfortunately not flavorful... and desserts were losers! Bottom line... nice atmosphere but overpriced food with tiny portions and not delicious enough regardless of amount served. Sorry Spruce! You guys needs to try harder and incorporate some lovely tasty salads that don’t have 2 leaves on the plate.
Great service and ambiance. Loved the decor but it was hard to find a bottle of wine for less than $90 to pair with a $45 dollar entree that was good, not great . I may have ordered the wrong thing so I would be willing to try it again; however, the location, the cost and the first time "okay" food experience will unfortunately put it after a long list of other options.
I've had much better experiences at Spruce over the years but if this was my first visit it would've been my last. The food was good, not great, and the service was flat out terrible.
Love Spruce. Wonderful food and service. Big open space with high ceilings. Room for strollers!
Food is decent but not really worth the price, environment and service are perfect
Our (my wife and I) review is a little colored by the fact that we didn't know it was going to be a prix fixe dinner ($160). The service was quite good except for a long delay from ordering to the first course- a salad. Given every body was going to eat the same first course. We could not understand why it took so long to prepare, We were there when the doors opened at 5PM and maybe they were not completely up to speed. We thought the 3 small courses were good but not exceptional. the main course for both of us was nicely done. So with 2 $160 dinners ,a little coffee and a generous $50 corkage fee we are at $380. Throw in tip and its over $440. For that amount of money my expectations are higher and I am more critical. There was no "wow" factor in our dinners and we didn't find the experience worth the price.
Three of us had an excellent lunch at Spruce. Kale salad and pumpkin soup to start were both perfect, as was the duck confit. Tip-top service. A lovely, high-ceilinged dining room. Go.
Awesome date night. Our server Daniel was the best server we’ve ever had - super helpful, funny, charming. And went out of his way to give us lovely little bites whenever possible. Definitely made a wonderful meal that much more memorable.
Fantastic cocktails. Incredible burger. Delicious wine. Wonderful service. You simply cannot beat weeknight burgers at Spruce.
The most magical birthday dinner! Would highly recommend this San Francisco staple.
Parents night out
We had a very nice dinner there. Great cocktail. Service was very well timed and thoughtful. Food was very nice too.
Pretty much the best place ever.
Fantastic meal here recently. The duck dish was by far our favorite. Great wine selection and service as well.
We loved the space. I ordered the hot vichyssoise. Delicious flavor. My husband ordered the tuna appetizer. It was beautiful, but he said it didn’t have much flavor. I ordered the beef cheek pasta. The server suggested I add the fresh truffles for $45. I thought it would be a treat. When the truffle was brought to the table it had no aroma or flavor. I was very disappointed. I should have declined it when he waved it under my nose and there was nothing there, but it happened very quickly. Our server was delightful. Just felt a little cheated by the truffle experience....
Booked via the restaurant week special website and edited this as a note for the visit. After being sat we asked the hostess and she said the restaurant week was over. But she’d inquire with the chef. The lady never came back with information. We didn’t mind as we had a good time anyway. However the reservation should’ve either reached out to us prior or then followed up once we voiced the issue. Overall great experience. The Lady at the door can use more training
Always the best in every category. The portions could be a little bigger tho.
Restaurant Week Prix-Fixe was outstanding value. My wife and I tried all the options and every dish was outstanding. Service was excellent. Warm, cozy ambiance, and despite a full room was quiet at lunchtime.
Wonderful Service, wonderful food! This was a real treat for SF Restaurant week!
The ambiance at Spruce is wonderful, maybe because we went for a late lunch. For SF Week menu it was worthwhile; but we went late afternoon and that was not good as far as getting food was concerned. My soup came just warm but the waiter said "be careful it's very hot." It wasn't hot. I chose not to complain as it was late, although that is no excuse to serve warm soup that should have been hot! The burger was done as we requested--medium rare. Service was wonderful as it would be expected in such a place. We won't ever go back for lunch at such a late time again. But I've been for dinner (last year). We were a group of 7 seated at a roundtable which we enjoyed; however they rushed us because it seemed they wanted the table for others. I would only recommend to friends or others if they're willing to pay the prices at Spruce.
Outstanding as always. My favorite restaurant in SF.
Fabulous lunch during SF Restaurant week. Our server was fabulous and I would definitely return again. We had the potato leek soup, kale salad, duck leg and veggies and burger and an amazing butterscotch custard for dessert. All the food was delicious. The burger however was average. I did expect a burger from Spruce to be out of this world. Still we loved every bite of our meal. Great restaurant!
The waiter referred to me as a 'gentleman'. Maybe because I was the only woman with short hair and non-conforming homogenized looking sort, to Spruce's general female looking crowd - long hair, black attire. The waiter, never apologized. Perhaps the employees at Spruce could simply say, "good morning or evening - welcome to Spruce - would you like water, etc" leaving the 'gender' specifics outside. Especially since we live in SF.
100% overpriced. Very good meal, but $500 dinner for two with two drinks each is double what it should cost.
I recommend if someone else is paying.
My adult son and I both ordered the duck confit from the price fixed menu for restaurant week. The duck was visibly undersized. About half the size of a regular portion. It well prepare. We enjoyed it but did not feel satiated. We added an order of fries to get more food.
I considered ordering the potato leek soup but changed to kale when I learned that it contained cream because of my lactose intolerance. The server became concerned about butter in the duck confit and had the Parmesan cheese and crouton taken out of the kale salad. I appreciated her concern but both were unnecessary.
Disappointing meal. Not up to Spruce’s usual standards.
Probably one of the best restaurants I have been in a long time. Absolutely fantastic!!!
Very nice experience for SF restaurant week. Good food and the wine list/cellar was awesome. Loved the way they iron the creases on fresh tablecloth. I want to try that at home!
Food was great but we were seated 20 minutes past our reservation time. The check in host space was also left empty for up to 10 minutes as people came in and out of the restaurant.
The food is just normal. The food is not even tasty like what I cook...
I came explicitly to try the burger which is widely touted as one of the best in the city. It was good but not remarkable.
The food wasn’t that impressive, but the service is good
