What Insiders Are Saying
Fancy fine dining, San Francisco style. Bring your elders.
Perfect special occasion, date-night or friends gettogether spot. On this round, we had a weekend brunch. It's a pre-fixe only(3 courses if you count the wonderful corn bread and banana nut bread). We added the beignets for dessert, which were amazing. Came out with I think, 8 of them, along with a couple of sauces. We were so full and swore we could only eat one. Our impeccable server laughed and said he would check on our truthfulness shortly. Lo and behold, we finished them.
Otherwise, the starters were very good. My wife's main(omelette) was excellent. My duck confit benedict was good...very rich, especially without any additional starch or greens. I've discovered I'm much more of a benedict purist preferring canadian bacon and some sort of potatoes. I get that it's an upscale place though and they want to elevate what is otherwise a basic dish and it was very good.
Would highly recommend.
Spruce is a special occasion restaurant, one of my favorite in the whole US. Everything is wonderful. My 3rd or 4th visit in the last 10 or so years, and I hope to visit again from time to time. Just outstanding.
We hit Spruce whenever we get to San Francisco! Love this place! They always exceed expectations!
Top notch and high class with exceptional service!
Excellent venue that reflects Pac Heights ambiance and style with exceptional locally sourced menu.
This is our go to place for a celebratory meal. The staff always treats us with so much respect, pampering us all the way. Our meal was extraordinary. We did save room for the Binnets, which are our favorite.
Impeccable service, flawless presentation, superb dishes bursting with flavor and texture,
As always we had a fabulous meal at spruce- this time brunch was for my baby's six month birthday. My parents and husband all got the famous spruce burger and I got the buttermilk pancakes. The pancakes are an inch thick each and have a beautiful golden hue and amazing crispy outside. Husband and parents were all very happy with their burgers.
The staff was attentive but not overly intrusive. The food was terrific and the special was vegetarian which was perfect for my customer.
I will be back again.
Our waitress, Sarah, was outstanding.
Outstanding! Blew away all expectations and the recommendations and service were spot on. Will definitely be returning!
Recommend ordering mains and skipping salad/soup course. The salad/soup was delicious but thimble size for $20 or more. Mains much more reasonable in terms of size and price. Service top notch. I enjoy fine dining and understand difference between it and Buca de Beppo. However as compare to say One Market which I love, Spruce is much more elegant and attentive, but hardly worth the cost in my opinion.
Everyone from the host to our waitress and the bussers were very profession, friendly and attentive. The food was fabulous, delectable, elegant and everything I can image from an upscale restaurant. Beautifully executed dishes. We had steak tartar, Karachi, sweet corn veloute, aged duck, aged steak, fresh beignets, lemon tart (given to us for our anniversary ). We also had a few unexpected palate cleaners and mini desserts. A radish with some special sauce, mini coconut cake and French macaroons. It was a very special experience for my husband and I.
Service was very poor. Over 45 minutes between ordering and arrival of food.
Great from start to finish! Beautiful decor. Very welcoming. Attentive but not overbearing service. Wonderful food & wine list.
Another, perfect dinner at Spruce!
Service for each course was exceptionally slow particularly considering the numbedr of tables occupied. The food was excellent except for dessert where instead of serving the berries intact, they were a puree.
Everything was amazing - The attention to detail from the moment we walked in the door. The food, wine, cocktails and the service all went together to make this night one of the best restaurant experiences we have ever had.
Amazing from start to finish!
Where do I begin to describe the most disappointing dining experience at Spruce during our 5 years of living in San Francisco? From cocktails that were weak and watered down (please hire a mixologist from any downtown bar) to poor service (no bread brought even through other tables received it, then brought us an appetizer rejected by the table next to us) to mediocre appetizers (overcooked tiny muscles with sticky gooey sauce), the whole experience was simply appalling. To add an insult to an injury, they brought us a complimentary pasta dish with truffles to make up for the snafu with appetizers only to charge for it later on the bill. The way we were treated spoilt the celebration of our wedding anniversary and I could not wait to leave the restaurant as soon as we could. We did not order dessert, but the restaurant brought us a piece of complimentary cake, but it was stale and inedible. Sad, really, especially considering the prices you are paying. Needless to say, we will never return.
Spruce is owned by the same group that manages Mayfield Bakery and The Village Pub in Palo Alto. Expect similar style of food/decor and same level of service. Love their duck breast - better than the counterpart in Village Pub. But the beignets are to die for! I could come back just for drinks and beignets.
The moment we walked in, the server welcomed us and ensured that our dining experience, especially for a birthday occasion, was memorable. He was very attentive and explained in detail all the food choices and ingredients. The food was very tasty!
Definitely a repeat location for a special occasion!
The best duck I've eaten since living in France. Wonderful wine list, with great 1/2 bottle selections. (Only mess-up was bringing a shared hot appetizer along with the cold shared one we wanted to start with--but that was gracefully and immediately corrected.--So, great service)
We dine here every time we visit the Bay area and have never been disappointed. Food, service, ambience are all superior.
We had not been there in years and we went back with the same friends of ours from Miami.
Everything was Delicious. Halibut A+ stone salad A+, Duck A+ Beignets and stone desert A+>
We live on the Peninsula so tend to eat at Pub etal, but this was SUPER!
Congratulations to Hadley
As always a great pleasure to visit this place. the service is always top notch and the food choices sufficient without being overwhelming. speaking of which the wine list is a challenge in its depth and breadth and has something for everyone.
The rating for service is based strictly on the wine service. While a wine stewart properly opened and poured the first glass from my last Leroy 1998 Les Combottes bottle, the server when pouring the final glasses disturbed the sediment so that I left more wine than necessary had the bottle been properly handled.
Wonderful experience from start to finish. Worth every dollar.
We regularly dine at spruce, however the last visit was rather subpar. I specified I was going to be dining due to a special occasion, was offered seating in the bar which I declined, waited about 15 minutes before I received water. Had to request all table maintenance. I understand busy evenings can limit quality of service however at the price point I am paying, I do expect more.
Will return. Hopefully better next time
This spot has it all - delicious and innovative food, sparkling presentation, lovely service, and a calm ambience. I can’t wait to be a regular at this gem.
Spruce is always great, a nice feeling of sanctuary. Exquisite food and service
Perfect place !!
We had a wonderful time! Lovely service and delicious food.
Outstanding in every respect!
Spruce never disappoints! This time it was the sweet corn velouté!
It was perfection in a bowl - taste, texture, temperature, and presentation were all spot on.
The Spruce environment is high class. The restaurant is beautiful, and many servers take care of you, rather formally. The food looks great--presented beautifully with flowers and arranged artistically. BUT, the food was good, but not exciting. And the portions on several items were ridiculously tiny. The prix fixe lunch menu included a salad. The salad filled less than half of the small plate. The included melon had 2 or 3 pieces slightly bigger than a sugar cube. The greens included 2 leaves the size of a thumbnail. There were about 4 rings of cucumber. It looked great, but it's hard to imagine why they would serve such a small salad.
We had the chicken salad, which came with three good sized pieces of grilled chicken breast. The chicken was dry and I'll venture to say it was cooked quite a bit ahead of time.
The staff were all very nice and made us feel comfortable. I don't see a real need to eat lunch at such a la-dee-da establishment with high prices when the food is good, but not exciting, and looks much better than it tastes.
Exceptional brunch. A good friend visiting from out of town...we had a gift card, but had never experienced the restaurant, so you never know what to expect. Wowsers! Everything we ordered was off the charts in terms of presentation and flavor, and the service was among the best we have ever experienced. Kudos to Spruce...we'll be back.
Spruce is now my go-to place for special occasion lunches. It’s a beautiful space, food is VERY well prepared, service is on par with French Laundry. During the week they offer a tasting menu with optional wine pairing as well as a la carte that includes their famous hamburger. Their greyhound is, in my option, the best in town. Most importantly, one can converse there. I must emphasize that my comments pertain to my Spruce lunch experiences. My one dinner experience was not one I care to re-experience. Too many tables squeezed into the fireside room and the service was understaffed. It was a stressful, subpar experience and certainly not worth the money. But lunches and brunches are wonderful.
As an aside, I have taken a Spruce cooking class. They know good food and attentive preparation.
Wonderful experience at SPRUCE. The duck main course may have been the best I have ever had. Our server was Remy and he was very good and very nice. We would ask for him again. I highly recommend and would say it is presently one of the very best in San Francisco.
We went for the Burgers and they were awesome! Will definitely go back for the rest of the menu!
