Spring Mill Cafe
A midweek dinner at Spring Mill Cafe is like taking a quick & wonderful vacation in a tiny French town. We went with old friends who also love the place, so we were at home the minute we arrived. We shared a pâté plate & a cheese board while mulling over the great menu choices, finally choosing various salads for appetizers. The kale Caesar is wonderful - not your father's Caesar for sure, with celery root and lemon plus rice croutons. Then it was the fish specials for two of us, rabbit cassoulet for #3, and a delightful mushroom bourguignon for me. I'm not vegetarian, but SMC's plant based main courses are so hearty and delicious that I never miss animal protein when I get one (which is often). The experience is always paced well, so you can savor everything from the dining experience to interacting with the excellent, erudite people who make it happen for you. I'm already thinking about that rabbit for next time!
My husband and I have considered Spring Mill Cafe one of our favorite restaurants, especially since it’s so close to our home. The food, ambiance, and service have all been excellent throughout the years. Our most recent dinner there, however, indicates the quality has slipped a bit. Service and atmosphere are still great. But our food was less than expected. He had the escargot appetizer and mushroom stew entree. The escargot were out of shell and presented on a bed of watery polenta. Why not just stick with a traditional presentation with lots of butter and garlic. If it ain’t broke . . . The mushroom entree was also watery and tasteless. More like a soup, really, but painfully low on seasonings. My kale caesar salad was okay - I appreciated the kale instead of romaine. But the rice “croutons” were only small bits of rice cake - utterly tasteless. I understand the desire to update traditional dishes and make them healthier. But there’s no need to sacrifice flavor and texture. On the bright side, my chicken was wonderful. Lots of shredded meat in a phyllo crust and seasoned in North African style with cinnamon, turmeric, and saffron, with spicy tomato reduction on the side. Delicious! Desserts were ho-hum. Creme brulee was regular custard and too thick. Spicy orange cake was dry - no wonder it comes a la mode. I look forward to seeing menu changes for the spring.
Always a pleasure to dine here. Lovely food and pleasant staff.
So unchanged in 40 years quaint atmosphere and the food still as delicious as ever. A busy Valentine weekend but we never felt neglected. It’s like you were having dinner in
We've been going there for years. Delicious food and a friendly staff with a setting and ambiance that is practically unbeatable. We live in South Jersey and it's well worth the trip.
Initial greeting was less than welcoming. Said we made reservation. Waitress said that didn’t matter. Wanted to place us by door. Children screaming and chaotic to say the least first impression, wanted to leave. Stayed. Went to corner table. Food is good. Our waitstaff was pleasant. Owner I think. She was nice. Not sure if we will be back.
The atmosphere transports you to another place and time. The service was wonderful. Even though it was very busy, Lisa was always friendly, gracious, and very attentive to each and every guest. And the courses, there were five, were delicious! As soon as I finish this review I am calling Spring Mill Cafe to make a reservation for my upcoming birthday. Can't wait!
My wife and I have been going here for many years and have never been disappointed. Food and staff are always outstanding. Our server on Valentine's day was Lisa and she could not have been more gracious. Highly recommended!
Amazing food, and they never disappoint! The atmosphere is perfect and such a nice spot to relax and enjoy a fabulous meal.
Always fun Ezra and Nathan rock. Valentines Day prix fix was outstanding. Will be back ASAP. Keeping the Bistro tradition alive!
Love Spring Mill! ♥️ excellent food. Beautiful, rustic French atmosphere. Romantic. The service is phenomenal.
Superb lunch experience. Lisa our hostess provided a warm welcome and facilitated every stage of this delicious meal and satisfying dining experience. Every dish (charcuterie board, cream of mushroom soup pan-seared salmon and daffodil bake was delectable and memorable. Definitely a place to come enjoy and linger.
Simply outstanding steak and cheese board and mushroom soup
I went for my best friend’s 30th birthday and had a wonderful time. It’s BYOB, and I forgot to get wine and our waiter (I believe his name was Nathan) brought two glasses of very good red wine out for us without us even asking. He also gave us an extra dessert because it was her birthday. Everyone was very kind, helpful, professional, and so sweet! Not to mention, the food was excellent. Would definitely go back.
French (and French-related) menu - great variety of offerings I had a Moroccan dish, the others the rabbit). Portions perfect - enough, but not an overload. Desserts also well done. Definitely worth the money. And great abience - quiet and charming without pretension.
Excellent food and service. Wonderful old inn setting.
Simply one of the best meals I've had. Our waiter (Nathan) was on top of everything - knowledgeable about the menu, had great recommendations, and our water and wine glasses were never empty. We started with the pate sampler and a cheese board. Both were artfully assembled and such high quality - the rillets pate was especially delicious. Next was a simple but satisfying house salad with a mustard vinegarette. I had the Lapin Alsacien - rabbit with a sage mustard cream sauce, spaetzel, and sautéed cabbage. Absolutely great, so hearty and filling. For dessert I had a simple crème brulee. Would absolutely recommend to anyone who's looking for the best French food in the Philly area.
Early Valentine's Day dinner-- its romantic, intimate, friendly and good food. Also great that its BYOB.
Lovely birthday party lunch.
This was a birthday celebration dinner and our request for quiet, corner seating was perfectly honored. The building and dining room are warm, inviting and authentically French. Our server Emily was very knowledgeable, friendly and attentive to our needs. The entree menu was somewhat limited and unimaginative. One of of our dishes, the cassolette, was hot and cold in places and needed to be reheated. We'll try another visit.
We love the food and the ambiance of Spring Mill Café. Our server for the evening was Lisa. She did an excellent job. This is a favorite place for our family. We held our daughter's bridal shower in June. Ezra made it very easy for it to turn out beautifully. Everyone had a wonderful time and the farmhouse was lovely.
Small baby shower brunch for my daughter. Couldn’t have been more perfect. Excellent food and service. Can’t wait to go back!
SMC is our "French connection" when we really need a dose of civility! As we often do there, we split a pâté while deciding on our meal, an approach we highly recommend to put you in the right mood. Our indecision lasted about as long as the pâté, after which my wife had the daily salad special while I had escargots. The snails at Spring Mill are not your average wimpy little guys swimming in butter - they're big, meaty and delicious with just enough lubrication to make them a pleasure to eat. To follow, we each had a falafel burger, which is one of our favorites on the lunch menu. Dessert was Bassett's pistachio ice cream, which may not be French in origin but is as creamy and delicious as anything Escoffier ever made. Accompanied by the excellent grower Champagne we brought with us, this was yet another one to remember.
The atmosphere is beyond charming and is equally matched by the staff and owners.
The food was A+
Spring Mill Cafe is the most wonderful dining experience. Food is outstanding, our waitress Lisa was attentive and engaging and the ambience is warm and inviting,
Went for lunch for my birthday. Very nice. Has country French vibe.
very good dinner. nice quiet atmosphere. slight cold draft from window and soup was not hot enough when first served were only negatives. filet was excellent. chocolate cake with cherries very good. coconut /lemon/lime cake was only ok (no zest)
Spring Mill was perfect for our Anniversary. The service was amazing as Lisa was flawless in her balance of attention, information, recommendations, respect and welcome. She was the best that we have had after many upscale reservations throughout the country. The chefs were on point and knew how to build texture and flavor well. We cannot give enough compliments! We will be back
This is a charming place we've been going to almost since it opened. The food is always wonderful and the staff a delight.
Awesome again. Can't wait to go back.
Delicious food! Great service and ambience!
Always excellent, great service, great food, great setting.
New Years. What a wonderful, special experience. Service was superlative, as always, Nathan runs the front of the house, always so welcoming. Everything that followed was top notch. And the food was delicious. The entire crew made for a super special dining experience. And Ezra made the whole thing happen. A lovely fun delicious way to ring in the new year.
Cozy and intimate atmosphere. Delicious food. Personalized table service- Lisa was excellent. I love this place.
Absolutely fantastic dinner. Everything was cooked perfectly and just incredible flavors. We sat in the farm house which was very nice. The service was excellent, helpful and there when needed. This is on the expensive side but worth it. There is a lot of care that goes into this food. Very classy preparations. Funny we had our rehearsal dinner in the main house over 30 years ago. It was awesome then and still is today. If you want classical French and world influenced dishes superbly prepared, this is the place. You will not be disappointed. We can't wait to go back and have been eyeing some of my older Bordeaux wines to bring next time. Just an excellent experience!
Dinner was amazing and delicious. Service (thank you Lisa) wonderful. We will be back.
We love Spring Mill Cafe and have been there often. Sometimes it can be a bit chilly, but the food and service is exceptional and warm. Just wear a sweater; it is a lovely, albeit drafty, house.
My husband and I had a delightful dinner with two other couples in the farmhouse, which has larger tables for larger groups. The ambiance was superb. Beautiful decor, lighting, and fairly private. Our server, Emily, was delightful and excellent. We shared a number of appetizers, including specials. All we’re outstanding. I ordered the Moroccan chicken (with the harissa on the side as I was told it was very spicy, and it was!) and many of the others ordered the trout special. One has the rabbit and one had the pork chop. We were all thrilled with our meals. We ordered three desserts, all yummy. It’s BYO, so that helped, but ended up being a little expensive. We’ll definitely return for a special occasion, but won’t be able to frequent the restaurant, sadly. Very memorable dining experience!
My husband and I went with his sister and her partner for a holiday dinner. It’s great that this is BYO so you can bring a special bottle to enjoy with great food! The atmosphere is lovely and cozy. The wait staff (we had Nathan) was so personable and friendly. The food was very good. I ordered the escargot that was good but a little ‘soupy’ in the polenta it came in. Still, fresh and I enjoyed it. That said, the chicken in phyllo pastry is awesome! So fragrant. My husband had the salmon dish and thought the taste was great but a tad cooked too long and the rest of the table very much enjoyed their meal. We’d come again (and have come for years).
Something’s just get better w time!
