food was tasteless, heavy, and boring. pasta was a bit over cooked. They seemed to be trying too hard to be different via putting together unusual combo of ingredients. But just made it complicated and fell flat. quite pricy for what you get. very disappointing.

We had dinner at the chef's counter as part of our valentine's day celebration. The food was phenomenal and the service was top notch.

The food was amazing. Sat at the chef’s counter and got to watch the amazing kitchen at work turning out gorgeous and delicious masterpieces. The service was slow, barely saw our waitress, never had my water refilled, luckily my boyfriend didn’t finish his glass so I could drink the rest of his. Ordered a glass of wine when we first placed our food orders and I finished it before the main course (had appetizers and lots of waiting between courses) and I would have loved another glass, but our server never came back to check on us, except of course to drop off our bill at the end of the night...oh and to offer us coffee after we’d already finished our dessert...I would’ve loved it

Pricey, but great for a special occasion/date night.
Small dishes, you may leave the place hungry.

My wife and I have eaten some appetizers and drunken at SPRQ . So we came back. We were very underwhelmed. We didn't send anything back because every dish was off. The roasted cabbage salad had crummy croutons and these salty mini fish sticks. None of the flavors melded. The brusheta special was a pile of stuff that you could not eat comfortably by hand or by knife and fork, plus it didn't have any flavor to speak of. The gnocchi we ordered was just plain weird. They were shaped like like alfalfa pellets you feed a rabbit, and there was a bunch of other stuff in there that we could not identify and just didn't taste well together. The ink spaghetti with octopus, didn't really have any octopus and used to much ink. It was difficult to eat. The only good thing we had were the oysters. Finally when someone orders a few appetizers, we don't want them brought all at once. I made it feel like a fast food joint.

We saw SPQR reviewed on Check Please, Bay Area and were excited to try the homemade pastas. My husband I were not real thrilled with either pasta dish, he had the sweet potato gnocchi and I had the lamb ragu. The dishes seemed to have too many ingredients that did not go together well. We both had a first course and were disappoint with those, as well. I had a deconstructed Caesar salad with charred cabbage, kale and 6-minute egg. The cabbage was cold, but the kale was room temperature and that just didn't taste right. The 6-minute egg was cooked well, but it was cold as well.
The staff were helpful, but not real friendly. We live in Oakland, and there are so many fantastic restaurants there, we would not drive back to the city and pay those prices for that food. Sorry, we so much wanted to enjoy our time.

Very good food. Even on a weeknight this place was packed to capacity. It’s very noisy and the tables are practically on top of each other. The wine list is extensive and when we asked the waiter for some help he didn’t really have much to offer. Dessert was the highlight of the meal.

A truly amazing meal. All the food was on point, the server was helpful in guiding us through the menu and we were spoiled by attention from the manager and the owner.

Get pasta meal (5 pasta courses) with wine pairing - great value, if you like unusual, out of the ordinary food. We just had it, all 5 were good, and 2 of them really amazing. That is available onlyvTue, Wed and Thu, and it's best to seat at the counter in front of the kitchen.

Compare to 2015 the wine list has declined markedly and the pastas-while still inventive- seem to be a little too edgy and not as good.

Was supposed to go with my mom but I booked the wrong date so my friend came with me instead. Since my mom wasn’t there I paid the bill and was very happy with how reasonable the price was for such an unbelievable and delicious meal. Very generously poured glass of wine! I will be rebooking for the weekend that my mom actually does visit so she can enjoy!

Even though it was my birthday (I've had many), and we knew the noise level would make it hard for this old man to hear his wife across the table, we booked. It was loud when we sat down and through part of the meal. But ah, the pasta with truffle was superb, the Braida wines complemented our dishes. Our waitress was polite, informative, and missed nothing. If it weren't so far away from Sacramento, we'd eat there more often.

Alas the mighty have fallen: all the experiences servers are gone and the once bright light of sf is now an overpriced and underserved fossil ifs former self. Once upon a time this would never happen: we spend several thousand a year there since the opening, and we got asked to finish outside on a cold night when one of us had a bad cold.

Once upon a time, the servers knew wine well - their former Jeremiah started as a food runner and now is at Gary Danko. Alas the new servers can’t explain the wine well. And - can you believe this- my rabbit was cold by the time I finally got the wine with which it was paired.

The pasta was once complex works of art like 21 layer rabbit lasagna. Instead we got a super pricey gnocchi with a hint of fish eggs and a heavy sauce.

A firmer chef was at contrada, and we liked that a lot fir a fraction of the price. Also much better food at Mourad and Frances although Mourad is a bit too West LA and corporate fir my taste.

I know this is very negative. I called to offer to discuss today but didn’t hear back. Sf is great restaurant city, and you can do a lot better for a lot less.

Food was interesting and adventurous, but hit-and-miss. After spending $180 on dinner for two (two apps, one primi, one secondi, one beer), I went home and made a cheese omelette because I was still hungry.

The service we had was great. Our waitress wasn’t knowledgeable and even brought a custom wine to my partner that paired well with her meal - my partner left it up to the waitress to choose and she chose something perfect.
The tables are close together, so you hear other people’s conversations. However, it’s good for a date. The lighting is low, the ambiance is good, and the menu is good. You will spend a good amount of money but you should go in knowing that with an upscale restaurant.

Overall my experience was good - not tainted by the fact I was 10 mins late and they canceled my reservation and placed us at the end of the bar underneath a freezing AC !!!
I had called but they do not pick up and I left a vm about 10 mins in advance. So - I felt punished and disappointed to be seated at the END of the bar !
That said - the staff were friendly, somewhat unapologetic but under a lot of stress which is obvious. the food was fabulous and the wine pairing suggested really good.
I will go back - I liked the place and it was kind of fin watching the kitchen staff do their very tight dance around each other in a very pressured kitchen.

The worst service. They would not accommodate any minor change in meal. Being vegetarian there was no single dish for me, and they wouldn't even give me a small bowl of kale or any other veggies they had on the menu with other dishes to eat so I didn't starve. Water went unfilled the entire dinner. We ask for our check and left before we even got our dessert (that we paid for) because the service was that bad. Not going back!

We have dined here 4 times and every meal has been excellent. The menu is creative as you would expect for a restaurant at this level. If you are new to the restaurant, the menu might seem difficult to understand the verbiage, but the wait staff is very knowledgeable and can help you with choices. If your are a foodie, this place is a must! Make sure to ask a lot of questions so that you get something you will enjoy.

This was such a pleasant surprise-only my 3rd visit and the tasting menu with wine pairing really hit the spot. Pasta dishes like you've never had and generous sizes-Italian wines were perfect and very proudly poured by the gracious staff. Sat at Chef's counter and enjoyed the very busy Chefs trying to keep up with all the orders. Exceptional experience-very nice people work there. Truly a gem of a restaurant.

We were at the table for 30 minutes before drinks were finally served. We were not in a hurry, luckily, so this was merely concerning and annoying rather than evening-ruining. The food was decent, at times interesting, but not nearly Michelin-star level. It was a Monday night, so it is possible that they have consistency issues, which is a key variable that requires exceptional management to avoid. But I have only been once, so I have no actual data on variance. But on this particular Monday night, the food would 50/50 get honorable mention... and given that the ambiance is very sub-par for the Michelin list, the food has to be fantastic to make up for that. Considering all this, the prices were too high, but not outlandish.

delicious food, most notably the following 2 items:

filo and bufala ricotta “pie”, kabocha squash, pumpkin seed pesto, sesame honey
broccoli and hen of the wood mushroom, aged gouda “budino di pane” and acorn ham

both were creative, tasty, and well executed. we also had chestnut gnocchi and a meatball dish, both of which were delectable.

our table was way too close to the one next to us but unfortunately that is the setup and the only way people on the other side of us could get in and out of their table.

They rushed us through our courses to get the table back. When we asked for a bit of time they said “no sorry, it’s a Chef driven kitchen” whatever that means! But clearly it was not a customer driven experience.

I visited with my daughter during the FOG Art Fair. We showed up a little early and it was awkward as there is literally no place to stand. We went outside but we didn't have enough warm clothing. Came back in to see about a drink while waiting and were seated at the bar. Waiter never got to us. Seated at our table. The overall vibe felt like they wanted to turn the table. Food was generally good. Gnocchi w truffle was great. Smoked fettuccine we ordered w/out bacon for pescetarian but it needed that bacon. Dessert was built around a fried donut that was raw. We couldn't eat it. Mentioned to waiter but didn't get much response. Overall mediocre experience but figure it was a rough night and could have ordered better

For a restaurant that i have frequented regularly since its opening in food and service left lot to be desired. The foot was very salty. The server never checked in on wine we had to ask the host. He had no idea about wine (not his fault). As we were winding up dinner the host and couple of people were right behind our table hovering with a worried look discussing and giving an impression they wanted to turn the table. We took under 1.5 hours for an expensive meal.

This is as nearly a perfect restaurant as one will find. The food is divine and on this night the service was equally spectacular. The menu is incredibly innovative. We three shared four appetizers, the best of which was the burrata. For entrees we had three incredible pasta dishes. Desserts were wonderful. This deserves its Michelin star.
