What Insiders Are Saying
An ambitious restaurant, and a good one at that. SPQR is making a run at the San Francisco pasta crown, mostly with ingredients we can't pronounce.
The food was good but took over 45 minutes to get our order. When we asked about the delay in getting our food, the server said something lame and did not check on it. The portions are small, so don;t go here if you are hungry.
Food was good though a bit pricey for what it was. Wine recommendations were great.
Very cramped restaurant - we were a group of 2 and sat at a 4-top essentially (about 2 inches between tables) with another couple not in our group. It was fine, lively feel but definitely a bit crowded.
Fabulous Italian food. Second time in 6 weeks and it did not disappoint.
Truffles were in and to die for. So worth the price.
Below average restaurant without any taste or quality in their food. Not sure how this place has been able to get a MICHELIN Star. Service was extremely poor. We finished our pasta course and the plates were not picked up for over 20 minutes. The appetizer we were given was not what we ordered (which we returned right away). There was no apology or any acknowledgement that there was a mistake. Overall very sub par restaurant. Definitely significantly better places to enjoy a nice evening with good quality food.
We were extremely disappointed with SQPR.
I’ll start with the most important thing- the food. It was good. But it was not Michelin-star-worthy. Dishes had potential, and individual aspects were good, but they didn’t come together. As examples:
1) The octopus appetizer. The octopus itself was excellent. The kale was excellent. But the cold garbanzo beans were a miss and the accompanying sauce was too sweet.
2) The meyer lemon linguine with abalone. Excellent pasta, but the abalone was tough and didn’t add any taste or texture value to the otherwise delicious dish. Something like uni would have been a much better pairing. Or at least a well cooked abalone, which is not difficult. I love abalone!
The ambiance was dead, and this was Friday night. I don’t expect dead from a restaurant where you’re almost shoulder to shoulder with your neighbor.
The service was the real nail in the coffin. We often felt forgotten about- and the hostess kept diving in. We also ordered a carafe of wine, which had a lot of sediment. In my mind, a Michelin star restaurant should be pouring wine with enough skill to leave the last drops of wine, and all that sediment, in the bottle. The person pouring the wine into the carafe could have done this. And the random waiter walking by who dumped the rest of the wine into our glasses could have prevented this.
There are too many good restaurants in the city for me to recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Hit and miss on both the food and the service. Salt is prevalent. Wine list is overpriced even for SF. Kushhi oysters to die for so not all was lost
Was expecting a lot more in plating, flavor profiles and overall taste for the cost. I felt like many of the plates were not eye appealing and lacked the enticement factor. Other plates were just plain ugly or unappetizing to the eye.
The head chef was also not so pleased. Yelling at his chefs for a good hour during the main rush, especially his need to request "the f'ing risotto" like three times.
The service was great, as was the Italian wine. It was nice to sit at the chef's table and watch them work, although, it's not as much fun when the food is not appealing or tasty.
Overall I was bummed.
Might be the best Italian dinner we’ve had in awhile! Great atmosphere and service was outstanding.
Our fourth visit. It never disappoints and always leaves us wanting more and looking forward to our next visit. The ambience is so welcoming, the service is a high level of hospitality with great knowledge. And the food is just to die for. No liquor here. Just beer and wine. But you won’t care.
If you like foie gras, SPQR Is the place to have it. Delicioso! Excellent food, wine and vibes. Friendly, down to earth staff. Always a fun experience here. Grazie.
Fantastic service and food. Allow the sommelier to choose a wine -- you won't be disappointed and will most certainly experience something special. We had a wine from the tiny Italian DOC of Molise that was out of this world. Would have never thought to order it myself.
Always welcoming and delicious.
David, at the wine bar, a kind, humorous and, above all knowledgeable, wine savant eloquently describes the wines he serves and perfectly pairs them with each course.
SPQR is always a reliable place to go for an authentic and decadent Italian meal. The staff is well informed on the dishes as well as wines to pair. We always do the pate. This time we also enjoyed a delicious special with fontina and white truffle - truly to die for! Be prepared if you're going to SPQR, you must arrive hungry!
Wonderful service but pasta dish (rigatoni) was extremely salty. Unfortunately won't be a regular here.
Seated 20 min after reservation time( they charge a customer $25 if a customer changes but what about when they do?).
Hair in salad, was replaced but not mentioned.
Seating is extremely cramped . We had booked chefs table but could only get a table after 20 min wait.
Food was overly salty and not very remarkable. Not sure how this place has a Michelin Star. None of the other tables near us were happy with their food. Not worth eating here
Food was overly complicated for Italian and wines by the glass poor and ridiculously overpriced
Awesome food, terrific entertainment if you sit at the chefs bar.
Insanely bad everything
Was great, but
Amazing restaurant. The Chef's Counter is the best experience!
Awesome white truffles on risotto
Expected more welcome .
The very best Italian food. The tasting menu
was delicious and the white truffles are highly recommended. The service was very friendly and professional. Will be coming back.
We looked forward to having a wonderful meal. In the end, we were very disappointed with the "Italian" pasta's. Guess we are just OLD school. And for the price, very expensive. We shared an antipasto, we each had a Primi dish, with a glass of wine, and my husband had the sea bass. I will say the serving sizes where good, just not the flavors we had expected. Total cost for the 2 of us without tip was $180.00...
Heirloom Tomato Salad with Buffalo Milk Ricotta and Basil
Zucchero pasta with beef Ragu
Great wines by the glass
Went here for an anniversary. Everything was super good! It wasnt a pretentious place neither.
The bistecca is highly recommended and the chicken liver mousse as well. Unfortunately, the night I went, they ran out of the bufalla ricotta, but all was still good.
The waiter forgot the items we ordered. The food is good!
AppetiZers were really good
No disappointments here. Especially enjoyed how relatively quiet it was. Food, great. Service, great. Well worth the price.
Food was mediocre at best --- and prices are very high for what you get. Definitely overrated. Would not recommend.
The food was fine, not great: octopus wasn’t grilled great and the sea food in the squid ink pasta just average and not very tasteful. The mushroom with wagyu beef and bread pudding was very good. Overall it’s not the greatest place to sit, they try to squeeze in just too many people on both the tables and bar to have zero privacy and simply don’t have enough space to properly sit. All in all fine but doesn’t live up to the hype.
Delicious food and wine for a special occasion!
Everything was great except for one--- the hanger steak. My husband said that the potatoes were undercooked and the steak was mediocre. The pasta dishes, fettuccine uni and bucatini were our favorites. Would go back again to try another pasta dish.
It took 45 mins to get our third course. By the time we got the food we were not even hungry anymore.
We had the pasta tasting menu, and while most of the courses were great, some were better than others. The wine pairings were a little on the light side; I'd advise just getting a good bottle instead. Service was fantastic, as always.
The seating is a little tight but the food and service are excellent. I felt like i could pay a lot more for similar food elsewhere so the value was great as well
