An ambitious restaurant, and a good one at that. SPQR is making a run at the San Francisco pasta crown, mostly with ingredients we can't pronounce.

We were disappointed with the attempt the restaurant is trying to make with the food. It’s as if they are trying to get a Michelin star by overdoing it with the ingredients. The quality of the ingredients was very good but they just didn’t go together. It used to be a simple and delicious neighborhood restaurant , now it’s overpriced and trying too hard.

Friendly service. Delicious home-made pastas with creative sauces. This was the nest pasta we have ever eaten. Anything with pork also delicious. A mistake was made bringing a wrong appetizer, and we were allowed to keep it complimentary. We knew nothing about the Italian wines, and the waiter was so helpful in a way that did not make us feel ignorant. This is a gem of a restaurant.

Delicious! Excellent service, excellent creative food, all Italian wine list with lots of gems. Love it for Saturday lunch as it seems much easier to get a table. A bit on the pricey side, but my fault for ordering expensive wine.

The food was well prepared and tasted great. I would have preferred it if there was at least one more conventional pasta dish like a meat ragu sauce, there was a ragu sauce on the menu bloodnudlen but it was a little too adventurous for my taste,

We had a reservation at 7:30 and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated at our table. We didn’t order food until 8:40pm so an hour and ten minutes after our reservation. I heard great things about the restaurant before going and expected a more efficient, well run restaurant.

One of my favorite restaurants in the SF. I prefer to eat at the chef counter to watch in amazement and sample the wine

Spent a very memorable and enjoyable evening with great food, wine and company. I’m very impressed with the sommelier’s knowledge and quality of service without any pretentiousness. She was very warm and friendly. The same kudos goes to our server. There was something amiss with one of our plates and she took care of it without a fuss. I’m a big fan now! I highly recommend this restaurant.

Food was great, and the place was nice and quiet during the lunch hour on a Saturday, so that was a real plus for all of us.

Food is over rated from yelp and some of the special plates are too expensive. For example white truffle raviolini (goat cheese inside) is 80$. But other main course are ok. I have to think twice if i have to come back here again

Presentation: very well plate decoration

Service: excellent service

Ambience: nice, fit for everyday dinner or date. Not for children

Pastas are superb but the kitchen dishes them out somewhat erratically. The pork bun special was disappointing , on top of requiring a lot of time to prepare. The super star of the evening was Brandon Nadim Howell-De Jesus, a maitre / hybrid sommelier that made excellent wine choices for us, was knowledgeable and talkative and kept an eye on the wandering waiters delivering plates to the wrong guest. Wine list was quite interesting but difficult to read because of the small fonts.

Made reservations through open table, showed up on time, had to wait 10-15 mins for a table to open and be cleared to be able to sit. Same as anyone without a reservation, so it was pointless to use open table in this instance.
The service and food were phenomenal, we had a wonderful time from that point on. Tasty high quality food, not cheap. Big praise to the chef and server.

Walked in - tables are so close that you may as well be eating with the next door table - terrible way to increase profits for such a popular restaurant - lights so dim that people were using their torches to look at menu. Food was good- at times , too many flavours and fussy. Terrible experience for dining out at an expensive restaurant - pack them in - maximise your profit margins- who cares about the diner - they will still keep pouring in - not us! Dining out is an experience that includes food - not this cattle herding, pack them in as sardines restaurant

We were seated right away and when asked what kind of water we wanted, we ordered sparkling water. All the servers were busily serving dishes - after about 10minutes, we finally got the attention of a server to ask where our water was. They said they were having trouble with their machine. Nice to know, but they could have been more pro active and told us.

We saw this restaurant on check please. It looked really good on check please. Don’t misunderstand, The food was good - just not great. And, after our meal when we looked at the dessert menu, we were told the dish we were interested in would take 20 additional minutes. I noticed that the server at the table next to us had mentioned to the other table that if they wanted a particular dessert, it would take additional time, so she asked if they wanted to choose now so they could get it started (even though they were not done with their entrees). We were not granted the same service. So I would say the service is less than stellar as some people get better service than others.

We had a nice anniversary date at SPQR, with good wine and service, however the price point for the quality of the food is why I give this a 2* value overall. It was a good meal, but not outstanding and should be priced about 20% lower for the quality:cost.

I continue to wonder why SPQR makes the "best of" lists all the time. Each time I have dined there it has been uninspiring and this last time is no exception.
They were out of the only vegetarian, non-pasta dish on the menu. The service was lacking as it took over 2 hours to complete a 2-course brunch. Portions were tiny and the bill was over $150 with no alcohol, for brunch. Not impressed. Would not recommend.

Ridiculously high prices (pretty much the same for everything g -$32) for small quantities of food that taste good but not great. They were out of 3 menu items, which of course we wanted.

This was a favorite of mine for many years. Have not been there in 14 months. Won’t be back again.

The food was excellent. The service very poor.
Right when we sat down, our server showed up and didn’t introduce himself or anything and just launched into what the specials were.

The food was excellent but the service so poor and really the overall ambience of sitting so close to other tables, makes it so I would not recommend it to anyone

Solid on every front with the exception of the wine list. The food is nuanced and has tremendous depth. I suspect having the tasting menu with the wine pairing is the way to go here to hedge against a misfire on the wine list.

Not our first time at SPQR but our first tasting menu there and it was fantastic. I seldom would get caught saying the portions might be too big....but, I also didn’t leave any food behind. The service was amazing and we had the pleasure of our waiter, who was patient and willling to go above and beyond with our wine choice, and the host / wine steward who also made the evening spectacular. From start to finish, the evening was incredible. Everyone that came into contact with our table was professional, friendly, knowledgeable and down to earth. SPQR has every right to have a snobby or pretentious staff but they don’t. And yes, the pasta might be pricey but it’s also pasta that you most likely have never tried and a combination of ingrediates that might seem odd paired with one another but end up working together in a mind blowing way. Synergies? SPQR has it in spades.

I would put this in my top five all time in SF. I get the feeling that you really can't go wrong with the food. We had two pasta dishes, which were both incredible. Great options for both meat eaters and vegetarians. The menu is creative -- there's nothing ordinary about it -- but not in an obnoxious way. Wine was excellent. The dessert was even amazing. You know you're in great hands at this place. Can't recommend highly enough.

Service was great!! Food was delicious but not epic. My expectation was very high for the food and I tend to be sensitive for overly seasoned dishes, so I found a couple dishes were way too salty for me. However, I know some people love well seasoned dishes, so I can see they would love this place. I was happy with the overall experience as the server was very attentive and nice. I liked broccoli and hen of the wood mushroom, aged Gouda “bundino di pane” and acorn ham (antipasti) and Meyer lemon linguini.
