SPQR Ratings and Reviews
The food here is really an experience. The flavor combinations are unique and work wonderfully in your mouth. The sommelier Sam will make excellent suggestions for wine so trust him to do so. The service is personal and impeccable. It's worth every penny! Treat yourselves to a special experience
We were disappointed with the attempt the restaurant is trying to make with the food. It’s as if they are trying to get a Michelin star by overdoing it with the ingredients. The quality of the ingredients was very good but they just didn’t go together. It used to be a simple and delicious neighborhood restaurant , now it’s overpriced and trying too hard.
Friendly service. Delicious home-made pastas with creative sauces. This was the nest pasta we have ever eaten. Anything with pork also delicious. A mistake was made bringing a wrong appetizer, and we were allowed to keep it complimentary. We knew nothing about the Italian wines, and the waiter was so helpful in a way that did not make us feel ignorant. This is a gem of a restaurant.
We were seated more than 30 mins past reservation time. No one ever reached out to let us know so we had given up our seat at a bar close by. Went next door to florio and tried to gather there. Would have been very appreciated if the restaurant had let us know b/c we would have stay put where we were all able to sit together. Then left at the table for 15-20 mins before any attention. Ordered a wine we had to send back it was so badly corked. Then took staff 20+ mins to find the next bottles we ordered that was recommended by server. Finally we ordered. First food to hit the table was not meant for us. Then got food and it was “meh”. In SF there is such amazing food that we are spoiled for sure but we expected much more. We enjoyed ourselves because we were with friends and are fun, chill people. But dinner went way later then we had intended/ told the sitter so that was just annoying to get home late and keep our sitter up later than she would have liked. Do not intend to return which is sad because I have great dinners there in the past. Just felt very sloppy.
We had a reservation at 7:30 and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated at our table. We didn’t order food until 8:40pm so an hour and ten minutes after our reservation. I heard great things about the restaurant before going and expected a more efficient, well run restaurant.
Spent a very memorable and enjoyable evening with great food, wine and company. I’m very impressed with the sommelier’s knowledge and quality of service without any pretentiousness. She was very warm and friendly. The same kudos goes to our server. There was something amiss with one of our plates and she took care of it without a fuss. I’m a big fan now! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Food is over rated from yelp and some of the special plates are too expensive. For example white truffle raviolini (goat cheese inside) is 80$. But other main course are ok. I have to think twice if i have to come back here again
Presentation: very well plate decoration
Service: excellent service
Ambience: nice, fit for everyday dinner or date. Not for children
Pastas are superb but the kitchen dishes them out somewhat erratically. The pork bun special was disappointing , on top of requiring a lot of time to prepare. The super star of the evening was Brandon Nadim Howell-De Jesus, a maitre / hybrid sommelier that made excellent wine choices for us, was knowledgeable and talkative and kept an eye on the wandering waiters delivering plates to the wrong guest. Wine list was quite interesting but difficult to read because of the small fonts.
Made reservations through open table, showed up on time, had to wait 10-15 mins for a table to open and be cleared to be able to sit. Same as anyone without a reservation, so it was pointless to use open table in this instance.
The service and food were phenomenal, we had a wonderful time from that point on. Tasty high quality food, not cheap. Big praise to the chef and server.
Walked in - tables are so close that you may as well be eating with the next door table - terrible way to increase profits for such a popular restaurant - lights so dim that people were using their torches to look at menu. Food was good- at times , too many flavours and fussy. Terrible experience for dining out at an expensive restaurant - pack them in - maximise your profit margins- who cares about the diner - they will still keep pouring in - not us! Dining out is an experience that includes food - not this cattle herding, pack them in as sardines restaurant
We were seated right away and when asked what kind of water we wanted, we ordered sparkling water. All the servers were busily serving dishes - after about 10minutes, we finally got the attention of a server to ask where our water was. They said they were having trouble with their machine. Nice to know, but they could have been more pro active and told us.
We saw this restaurant on check please. It looked really good on check please. Don’t misunderstand, The food was good - just not great. And, after our meal when we looked at the dessert menu, we were told the dish we were interested in would take 20 additional minutes. I noticed that the server at the table next to us had mentioned to the other table that if they wanted a particular dessert, it would take additional time, so she asked if they wanted to choose now so they could get it started (even though they were not done with their entrees). We were not granted the same service. So I would say the service is less than stellar as some people get better service than others.
We had a nice anniversary date at SPQR, with good wine and service, however the price point for the quality of the food is why I give this a 2* value overall. It was a good meal, but not outstanding and should be priced about 20% lower for the quality:cost.
I continue to wonder why SPQR makes the "best of" lists all the time. Each time I have dined there it has been uninspiring and this last time is no exception.
They were out of the only vegetarian, non-pasta dish on the menu. The service was lacking as it took over 2 hours to complete a 2-course brunch. Portions were tiny and the bill was over $150 with no alcohol, for brunch. Not impressed. Would not recommend.
