They were running a little late but after that service good. Food amazing. Flight of wines felt like a bit of a rip off though
Sportello, literally meaning “counter service”, is a gem in Boston’s Seaport District. Under the management of chef/restauranteur Barbara Lynch, Sportello boasts a unique design with diverse Italian cuisine and an extensive wine list. Our meals were very good and were complimented by the staff’s exceptional service. Overall, very pleased with this dining experience.
Too god damn expensive.
Food is overpriced and very few menu options
Lovely meal and wonderful service. This place remains my favorite.
Excellent food! Counter style seating was interesting if you like the open kitchen aspect. Stools became uncomfortable with no back support.
We don't eat at Sportello as often as we used to because my wife's office is no longer in Boston.
My wife likes to try different dishes like the pasta w/braised rabbit but I ALWAYS get the tagliatelle bolognese. After two different "finger" pours, Ethan was able to pair a nice soft red that complimented my meal.
The menu is varied but small as the restaurant is small too (maybe seats 40?). It is best to sit at one of the many swivel counter stools so you can watch them prepare things like how to peel an artichoke (now that I have seen it I would know better than to attempt such a task).
P.S. Barbara lives down the hill from us too although we have never met!
Delicious food but slow service. We had a group of 5 and 2 of us were late so maybe they were trying to wait for the whole party to get there, but they didn’t come by our table much while we waited, and they didn’t bring out the apps for stowaway 20min... We had a bunch of shared appetizers including the octopus (which was my favorite), the fava bean purée, some meat and cheese, bruschetta. Great wine selection as well. All the apps and my meal were very good.
Great food and service
Service was excellent, everyone was very friendly. Menu was different and intriguing.
Outstanding service. Made us feel special
We're always so satisfied with our choice to dine at Sportello. The staff are friendly and attentive and the food is always sublimely delicious.
Date night for the wifey and me to celebrate her taking her board exam for radiology. The food was all very good, especially the gnocchi, and our server gave us complimentary glasses of champagne. We had the dinner deal and I’d go here again. The only thing that could have been better was the inclusion of a vegetable dish in our menu.
One of the better dining experiences that I have had in the past year. We went there for lunch/supper on a Saturday, late afternoon. It was quiet, the service was friendly, knowledgeable and professional and the food was very enjoyable. The octopus carpaccio and potato gnocchi with lobster were exceptional.
I have been going to Sportello since it opened. It's one of my top three restaurants in Boston! I also enjoy talking to those that work there - great pleasure to see familiar faces. Thank You,
Always perfect. Servers who are true professionals and, owing to the unique counter service, intimately involved in your meal (while giving you space). Grateful to have the coconut cake back. A must visit in Boston.
I don't know where to start. Sportello is just simply Devine. While I live in Hoboken, and frequent many restaurants in NYC, I SO look forward to my business trips to Boston simply so I can dine here. I come for lunch and dinner sometimes on the same day!! The food and service, is as I say above, amazaballs. You must try the Rabbit pasta as well as the Bolognese. I even buy it in quart sizes to take back home with me. The first time I did it, I was worried that security wasn't going to let me take it through (was thinking it was would count as a liquid, but it doesn't phew). I was so worried, I didn't eat before I travelled just in case they told me I couldn't take it. I would have sat there and ate the whole thing before even thinking about handing it over. They did pull it out of my bag for an extra scan because they said it was so "dense". And it sure is. Packed with slowly cooked meats, fresh tomato sauce and so much flavor. And the service. Well, not sure where to start there either. Very attentive and friendly. Ethan is my favorite. The first time I came into Sportello, I knew nothing about the Chef/Owner (Barbara Lynch), the wine Director (Cat), etc. but he told me all about the history, the other restaurants, and all the love that goes into every bite and sip. Cat actually seeks out small vineyards and the quality of the list shows it. We got talking about one wine (Castiglion del Bosco) that had me swimming in warmth remembering my husband and my visit there. And that, is exactly, what she goes for. Wines that have meaning.
Loved everything about our evening. Ethan was our server and couldn’t have been more amazing. Such a wonderful night with delicious food, lovely wine and excellent service. Thank you!
Excellent soup. Tagliatelle was over-sauced for me but fried leaf on top was super aromatic and kept fish feeling light.
A lot of hype that is not justified for this restaurant. The pasta, although homemade and delicious, had way too much Bolognese sauce, and the portions are small. The kale salad was bitter and overly dressed with a very tang dressing. And those bar stools! Very hard seats and not comfortable at all. I felt the stool was slanted on a backwards tilt and would have been more comfortable standing at the counter. The decor is depression era cheap in the Fort Point Channel area of Boston. What was Barbara Lynch thinking?
Ethan was great. Well versed in the particulars of the cuisine and suggested a good wine. Highly recommend a visit.
Sportello is always on point when it comes to interesting, big taste, interesting sorta Italian food. And yesterday's casual business lunch did not disappoint. Perfect food all around!
Very good. Highly recommended. Convenient location. Extremely friendly staff. All of them
Ethan was absolutely amazing! Can't wait to come back next month!
I had a hankering for some awesome, interesting handmade pasta, and killer wine, and Portello knocked it out! Ethan, my server, was the perfect combo of personable, efficient and knowledgeable. I recommend the place, and will go back every time I'm in Boston!
Good local ingredients with cool vibe. Bar scene good and relaxed atmosphere.
The portions were tiny for the prices spent. The pasta was probably about half the size of what $28 should warrant. They were also out of 2 main dishes and it was only afternoon.
Amazing experience. Service is attentive and food is delicious. I suggest sharing things so you can try more! Their pastas are a highlight, as is their coconut cake.
The selections and food were great. Atmosphere was great for having a conversation.
Great ambiance and super service. Laid back and still a fancy dinner out. Fabulous food worth the cost.
Unfortunately the service was just really slow, and the restaurant wasn't crowded. About 90 minutes for a Friday lunch.
Like being in a great restaurant in Italy...
The food was delicious. They put in the incorrect lunch for one of us, but they quickly corrected it. It wasn't too loud, but could be when full. Some may think the portions are small, but the food is rich and if you follow the course lay out, bigger dishes would be too big. The tomato soup is a must!
Great pasta. Tried their family meal that allows you to choose 2 salads, 2 pastas and 1 entry for $55/person. Everything was fresh and delicious especially the gnocchi. Interesting set up, most of the space is U-Shape counter tops on a bar stool. It was kinda of fun, interacting with your neighbors. Probably, not the best for a serious business discussion. Different dining experience.
My favorite place in the Seaport. Fabulous food and nice atmosphere.
Must not miss the opportunity to eat at this contemporary diner - You will NOT be disappointed!
Food was great and service excellent . We got especially good attention by the host when we needed special seating due to a back problem .
What a fun place to dine!
Way too noisy. the vibrations and noise from the downstairs bar were very uncomfortable.
The quality of food and service does not correspond to the rather high prices.
