The location and view are very good. The service was fine. But for brunch it is not a good choice. Everything is a la carte--even bread. No rolls or muffins available at all. What was offered as an "omelette" was simply lot of scrambled eggs rolled over. For price, there is nothing special or welcoming or even "brunchy." There are many other choices in Pittsburgh that offer more and a better value.
The mussel app broth was over spiced. It should also be served w a large spoon to serve the mussels.
Steak frites was good. But fries were over salted.
Duck and sides were good.
3 in the party. Due to server error, 2 guests were served entrees and then my duck came out 20 min later. I understand that errors happen. But please be kind enough to offer a glass of wine on the house or something - to the diner who is waiting. Diners won't necessarily complain about such things in real time.
The pot de creme is not made correctly. It should have a pudding soft consistency. Not a stiff consistency. Please fix it. Or hire a dessert chef.
Went as a couple on a Friday night. Seated next to a very loud party of eight -- hard to hear yourself talk. There were tables further away (and by the window) that we were not offered.
The waiter arrived promptly, but announced that they were already out of five items on the menu - disappointing, because we had each already decided, and both of our choices were on the list of five.
I would very much like this restaurant to succeed, since Oakland needs a nice restaurant. But this is my third visit and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. It looks like it is mostly going to be a bar, with the restaurant just for hotel guests who don't want to leave the property.
Nice addition to the Oakland dining scene. Elegant space, good cocktails, interesting food.
Menu was very limited
I've been to Spirits & Tales on four or five occasions for breakfast and dinner. It is a lovely place, very comfortable and the view is spectacular. The menu is better than average but it could use some more imagination in the fish, gluten free and vegetarian selections. Additionally, please offer reduced-salt options for some or all of your menu items. It is always a healthy and a delicious choice. One need not overwhelm the natural taste of garden vegetables and beans and rice and potatoes with salt. I was hoping for the sharp eye-tearing taste of horseradish in your gnocchi but was distracted by the lip-licking salt instead. The dish is imaginative, but I suggest more pure horseradish, less salt. I think Spirits & Tales is off to a good start. Hope the menu grows vivid as the autumn leaves, warm as the winter hearth, sweet as the spring blossoms and fulsome as the summer garden. :).
Great food and ambience!
Honestly, this place was nice but I would never go back. I went at 11 and they had no breakfast options even though it was considered “brunch.”
Dear Emma, I'm sorry that our brunch selections were not to your liking. Our brunch menu does include breakfast selections such as Cinnamon Chocolate Babka Bun, Maple Flax Granola, Omelettes, and Savory Dutch Baby, in addition to our traditional S we'd love another opportunity to impress. Regards, Benjamin McCarney Director of F&B
Went for breakfast. Different selections than your usual items & presented beautifully.
Food was outstanding as was the service. Love the view, too. the music was too loud for us and our guests. We could not talk above the din. Eventually, they turned down the amps and it was so much more enjoyable. Recommend the chicken and seafood bowl. We will go back.
Dear Traveler, I'm so glad that our outstanding food and service made for a nice experience. We appreciate your feedback regarding the music as it heightens our awareness in this area. It was our pleasure serving you and we thank you for choosing us. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
One of the best experiences in Oakland in over 3 decades studying and living there! Thank you, S&T staff and owners!
Dear CathyCivy, Wow - thank you for the 5-star review! I'm delighted to hear that we gave you a great home town experience. We appreciate your kind remarks and look forward to a return visit. Best, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
enjoyed the food . it was our anniversary so they gave us complementary champagne. nice gesture. good service . they have a small out door patio that looks like I nice place to chill on a summer night . the dining area is on the 10 th floor . the only down side was they zing ya for $10 to park but tell ya it's a bargain because it's usually $ 30 to park there. park across the way at soldiers & sailors memorial hall lot . probably cheaper .
Dear willow08, Thank you for choosing us for your anniversary! I'm glad that our food and service made for a nice celebration. It was our pleasure serving you and we hope to host you again. Best, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
The socca, carrots, and fritters were all good. The duck entree was absolutely delicious.
Noisy, confused staff
Dear StanleyW, Providing the highest level of service is our number one priority and I sincerely apologize for falling short of meeting your expectations. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and we hope to better serve you on a return visit. Thank you for dining with us. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
The food and view were very good. The service was lacking as our server never checked on us and we had to wait almost 30 minutes for the server to come and get my card so we could pay.
Dear Anonymous, We pride ourselves on our service, so I'm very sorry that we let you down in this area. It was kind of you to note our food despite the lapses in service you encountered. We appreciate all your feedback, both positive and areas for improvement, as it allows us to serve our guests better. We hope to have you back and provide you with a flawless experience. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Beautiful space with a great view at sunset. The service was excellent and enjoyed the variety of flavors and unique items on the menu. The Socccca (chickpea flatbread) was a pleasant surprise of flavors. Well done all round.
Dear MatthewW, We value your kind feedback and are happy to hear that our beautiful space, service and unique menu made for a nice dining experience. Thank you for choosing us and we hope to serve you again. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Service is always slow
Dear Anonymous, We appreciate your pleasant review, but I'm very sorry that you experienced slow service. Thank you for your kind feedback as it allows us to serve our guests better. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Incredible and picture worthy scenery. Food consistency is perfect but the flavor left something to be desired. Slightly bland summer and/or for the current seasonal menu they were offering. I hope to come back again and find some spirit and flavor to the food, something that is memorable.
Dear AndresV, Thank you for noting our consistency and atmosphere despite being underwhelmed with your meal overall. We appreciate your feedback as it allows us to monitor and improve. For this reason, along with our seasonal menus, we hope to provide you with a flawless experience on your next visit. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
The chicken was AMAZING! Drinks were also very good.
Dear PamB, Thank you for your kind review! We appreciate the feedback and are glad to hear that you enjoyed the Roasted Half Truffle Chicken. We hope to serve you again. Best, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Everything we had was off the charts in quality, taste and presentation. While we had a couple of great apps (octopus and yellowtail crudo), I chose to have the burger (only my second of the year!) and it could have been a bone-in ribeye, that’s how amazing it was. My guests both had the fish dish (that night it was the Arctic Char) and they were equally blown away! Can’t wait to get back there!
Ps. The space and attention to detail met the amazing food on the highest of levels!
Dear Anonymous, Thank you for your compliments! We aim to impress, so I'm thrilled that your party enjoyed their meals. We appreciate your patronage and look forward to serving you again. Best, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Delicious food. Wonderful ambiance.

One of my favorite spots for after-work libations!
Dear foodee, We are happy to provide a little respite after a long day at work! Thank you for your return visits and for your time in sharing your kind review. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
A wonderfully unique dining experience in the city. Normally if you want a view you are limited to Mt. Washington so it is nice to have an option with a view down in the city as well. Cocktails were on point, small plates were a scrumptious start, and main courses were A+ by all 4 members of my party. Lively ambiance balanced out with the dim lighting and trendy decor. Very welcoming place to have dinner that encourages patrons to dive deep into conversations and really enjoy their evening.
Dear DarkDropper, We delighted to hear that your party enjoyed their dining experience. I'm glad that our ambiance, libations & food encouraged conversation and a good time. We appreciate your kind feedback and hope to serve you again soon. Thank you for dining with us. Sincerely, Benjamin McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Too loud. Terrible ambiance
Outstanding in every area. I can't wait to come back!
Dear ErinL, Thank you for the 5-star recommendation! It was our pleasure serving you and we look forward to your return. Thank you for dining with us. Best, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
The chicken main course should not be passed over. It was extrmemly moist, and very flavorful. They are starting a new menu this week which should be exciting to explore new food selections.
It is a very attractive venue and a great addition to the Pittsburgh food scene.
Dear jewelrylady, Thank you for letting us know that you enjoyed the chicken; I'm glad you are excited about our new menu selections. We appreciate your kind recommendation and look forward to serving you again on a return visit. Best, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
4 ladies trying to have a fun dinner overwhelmed by a large group
Dear Motorchair, We appreciate your ladies choosing us for dinner. I'm very sorry that a neighboring large group marred your visit; please forgive us. We value your feedback as it heightens our awareness in this area and allows us to improve. We hope to have the opportunity to serve you a flawless meal on a return visit. Sincerely, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
The best meal we’ve had all year-seriously! We went to brunch and had simply Amazing food, especially the horseradish gnocchi, fish flounder sandwich, ricotta cake and amazing cocktails. Excellent service and the chef came to visit the table and was awesome.
Food was ok, my eggs were completely over cooked, burger was over cooked. Wait staff is nice but was lacking overall. Main manager was wonderful! I would not return or recommend outside of the location/view.
Dear LaurenD, I'm very sorry that you did not enjoy your meal. We strive to provide a pleasant experience, so I regret that we let you down. We appreciate your feedback and hope you will reconsider a return visit. We'd love the opportunity to serve you better. Sincerely, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Take a look at this view of Oakland! Experience the affable service and relaxing yet vibrant atmosphere of this jewel amidst the hustle and bustle. Next to you is the 2nd tallest academic building in the world!
Dear CathyCivy, It was kind of you to take the time to review Spirits & Tales. I’m glad you enjoyed your experience. We appreciate your choosing us and hope to serve you again. Best, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
I want to LOVE this restaurant. Newer hotel w good views of Oakland. Sophisticated mood but... while the service is very friendly and enthusiastic, it’s slow. The menu is interesting and contemporary with promise. It needs more variety including some traditional fare. Every item doesn’t need to make a statement. I ordered off menu and asked fir a salad w salmon. It was good. Soups seem to be good.many items not available. It could be great. Hope it manages to transform
Dear CafeView, We aim to impress, so I'm sorry that your experience was just okay. Your comments, which highlight our successes and areas for improvement, are welcomed as they foster change for the better. Thank you for taking the time to share your review and please visit us again soon to experience our new menu. Sincerely, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
The view is spectacular, but it seems the restaurant might be revamping its menu which noone told us when we came in so many of the items we would have ordered were not available ... no salmon tartare, no mushrooms, etc. which makes their limited menu even more limited. What we had was certainly good, but would've preferred a heads-up and some more options.
Dear JaneR, I'm very sorry for the limited menu selections that were available during your visit. Please forgive us as this certainly is not up to our standards. It was very kind of you to note our spectacular view and good food despite this disappointment. Thank you for dining with us and we hope to better serve you on a return visit. Sincerely, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Spirits and Tales is the embodiment of elegance and simplicity. The menu was simple, only containing one chicken, one steak, etc. BUT every menu item was executed with perfection. The employees as a whole all the way from the hostess to the chef were all so very accommodating and made our visit feel special. I would go here every night if I could afford it.
Dear PeopleOfTheBurgh, Thank you for the kind recommendation. I'm glad our menu, execution, and service made for a special experience. We appreciate your patronage and hope to serve you again soon. Best, Benjamin D. McCarney Director of Food & Beverage
Very good ambience and excellent service. Great views. Menu is somewhat limited
Dear Barbara, It was kind of you to take the time to review our restaurant. I’m glad you enjoyed our ambiance and service. We appreciate your choosing us and hope to serve you again. Best, Michael Goldberg General Manager
The service was excellent, so the overall experience was fine. But the dinner menu choices are limited, particularly if you don't want vegetarian. And the portions are small for the prices charged. I think their model is to serve their hotel guests as a captive market. But for people not staying at the hotel there are better values in Oakland, e.g. Legume.
Dear NotMaryAnne, I'm glad that you enjoyed our service and food, but I regret that you did not find us to be a good value. We appreciate your feedback regarding our menu. Our menu is made up of several small plates in addition to our entrees which are rooted in the spirit of the original brasserie. Thank you for your time in sharing a review and we hope to provide you with a better value on a return visit. Sincerely, Michael Goldberg Director of Food & Beverage
The greeters and service were excellent, however the music was too loud, your cocktails were different, and your food was good, but did not like the limited menu...need more home-town Pgh food.
But we will return, thanks for your new style and showcasing Oakland....vies were awesome!
Dear ReneeQ, We are so appreciative of your kind review. It is rewarding to know that you enjoyed our great food and friendly service. Your remarks, including recommendations for improvement, serve as an encouragement to our team who strive to provide a pleasant experience. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and please dine with us again. Best, Michael Goldberg General Manager
Limited dinner menu. My husband’s steak was tough. Waited a long time for bread for the table. No dinner salad on menu? Lovely room, but menu needs revisions. Might recommend it for cocktails
Dear CarolS, Thank you for dining with us. I regret that our dinner menu was not to your liking and that your husband did not enjoy his steak. Our menu is made up of several small plates in addition to our entrees which are rooted in the spirit of the original brasserie. We appreciate all your feedback, including areas for improvement, as it allows us to monitor and improve the dining experience. Sincerely, Michael Goldberg General Manager
Outstanding food and view of Oakland. Need to order small plates in addition to entree since entree was not very fulfilling. Food was excellent and so was atmosphere.
Dear GeraldZ, We are thrilled you enjoyed your meal! Thank you for the review and please visit us again. Best, Michael Goldberg Director of Food & Beverage
The menu was very limited and expensive for the portion size. It was my friend's birthday and asked the wait staff about what they do for a birthday. I told them to have her pick what she wanted but he just brought her almond cake and wished her happy birthday. I was surprised they charged me for her dessert. Mos places comp. I was very disappointed with the menu. Nice atmosphere.
Dear diner, Thank you for dining with us. Our goal is to exceed our guests’ expectations, so I regret that your experience was just okay. I'm sorry that we did not impress on this special occasion. We appreciate the feedback and hope to serve you again. Sincerely, Michael Goldberg Director of Food & Beverage
