Spirits & Tales
I had heard that the view was phenomenal, and I would say it was decent, but overall, the restaurant reminded me of any run of the mill hotel lobby restaurant, which is the reason i rated the ambiance poorly. The food was very good.
We had Sunday brunch. It was delightful. The views are amazing. The food was delicious. The service from the ground floor elevator to the front desk staff to the server was exceptional. We took guests and they were so impressed. They’ve lived in Pgh for years and could’ve get over the beauty they hadn’t previously seen.
I was there once for lunch and once for breakfast. Each meal was just ok. In both instances the greens on my plate were heavily salted which was not appetizing.
Service was slow at each meal.
Food was amazing. Service was the problem. Had reservation but had to wait for table to be cleaned. Ordered small plates and soup. Took over 40 minutes and it all came at one time on a very small two top table. Poor training for sever and kitchen. Certainly correctable. Food made it worth it.
The roasted olives and the octopus are excellent appetizers.
We ordered the fish plate and the chicken plate, both really good.
The view is magnificent and the place is quite and relaxing.
very nice place. service too long even though there was only a few people, and the food looked nice, but tasted mediocre. they need to work on their recipes to perfect the levels of salt to sweet to sour.
Staffing will be the undoing of this promising spot. Too few bartenders and waitstaff. The protein mains were good. The french fries were overcooked to become potato sticks. The side dishes were over seasoned.
Randolf, our waiter, was outstanding! and the food and view were great
Highly recommend for food and exceptional service. Views from nearly all angles is impressive. Liked the uniqueness of an upside down establishment. Not recommended for small group meeting in that noise level blocks out communication between guests even at a small table. No rushing. Pace of meal presentation was spot on.
We have been staying at the Oaklander Hotel for the past few days while a family member has been in medical care. All our meals have been at Spirits & Tales. Food and ambience are wonderful, creative. Modern but warm and inviting. We had the burger and fries, market fish, chicken and the beet salad and more. We also had lovely breakfasts. High quality tasty foods. Fit for foodies and across the board high quality. Wines are excellent and a vast array of options. Views of the Pitt campus and Schenley Farms are incomparable. We enjoyed staff and service very much. Everyone is excited to be a part of the new addition to Pittsburgh’s food scene. Thanks to S&T for making our stay so enjoyable. We will be back next week!!
This was our second visit to Spirit and Tales. We love the decore and the menu is very good. Service has been a disappointment on both visits. They seem to have 2 people running around like crazy and others not busy at all. Kitchen seems too far for the staff and they disappear often for long stretches. Steak frites was also a disappointment. Very small for a 14oz ribeye and it came way over cooked, which we sent back. Burgers were also over cooked but acceptable. Medium well vs medium. Olives were good as well as the chickpea flatbread appetizers. It’s a wonderful addition to the Oakland area. I hope they work out the issues because this place has fabulous potential.
We went for Sunday brunch. Everything was excellent, including cocktails!
Excellent S&T Burger
An average experience for the price. Great ambiance and views though. Probably a better place for drinks than for dinner.
We dined on Easter Sunday and was pleased with the ambiance and requested to sit by the window which was all occupied. The tables near the window are small and positioned in a tight place. It is best to sit in the middle where there is more room. We liked the terrace area but it was only for sitting and enjoying the rooftop view of Oakland. We ordered prosecco which was delicious! However, the food was not that great. The grilled octopus appetizer was very oily and my husband ordered salad which was just okay. My husband also ordered Streak Frites which served ribeye that was cooked to perfection at medium however, it was a very, very bad cut and full of fat! In fact, half of the meat was all fat. Disappointing! I ordered the Marseillais Fish but they did not have the fish available. What they had was "similar to a salmon," our server said. It was mild tasting but I was also very disappointed with the cut of the fish. It is the worse cut, the tail end. Lastly, for trying to be a fancy French bistro, we have had better in Pittsburgh. For these reasons, we do not think we will be back. We will be going to our favorite bistro instead, which is always very consistent and serves choice cut meats and fish.
Enjoyed our meal and especially the view. Great place for brunch.
Really loved our entire experience for brunch here. Our server was perhaps the best we've ever had... food divine... decor and theme overall on point... view lovely. We will return!
Good food. Creative cocktails. Efficient service. Fabulous views. I’ve had a business breakfast (avocado toast is excellent) and took my visiting parents for dinner. I was impressed and will return.
lovely atmosphere and view of oakland. food is very good and we would return.
Service is not quite up to where it should be but given they opened recently, that should improve. Food was good. Drinks from bar are amazing. The desserts are not worth ordering as they are nor anything special.
Convenient and classy enough for Pitt related business dinners. Would go again to try a couple of more items from the menu. Forget the cheese board go for radish toast.
I want to specifically address service at Spirits & Tales. First, compliments to Lee, the server, who seemed to be single-handily running the show. Seating guests, taking orders, mixing drinks, serving drinks, and cashing out guests. It is because Lee was filling so many hats that I gave a bad review on the service. The service was extraordinarily slow because Lee was doing tasked with so many jobs during a busy lunch hour.
Regarding the atmosphere, it is too loud for a business meeting or intimate conversation.
The food is ok, but the menu is limited. Comparing S&T to Legume, one of the other good restaurants in Oakland, I would choose Legume in terms of price and quality. If comparing S&T to The Porch, The Porch has S&T beat on prices.
S&T could be a great addition to Oakland, but needs to work on service.
Radish toast - YAY! Lovely lovely lovely. The butternut squash soup was tasty but missing something, but not sure what. The 3/4 cup of gnocchi were tasty but not nearly an entré-sized order, especially for the price. A good burger is always welcome standard fare on any hotel menu. As for the Ambiance, well, its just too bad. The blaring sunshine was unescapable - even with the blinds down. Clearly difficult to carry on a conversation when dodging sun-induced blindness. Otherwise a very pleasant experience.
They just opened so maybe need time to get adjusted!
Perfect except a little too loud ; very active bar scene in the early evening.
This place is beautiful, with outstanding views. My salad was excellent, however, the salmon add on was a little expensive. It doubled the price of my salad. The service was very good but slowed a little at the end, especially for lunchtime.
The service was terrible. Our first waiter was incredibly slow and it took an hour for us to get water and cocktails. He was then fired while taking our food order mid shift, which made us very uncomfortable. The management staff doesn’t seem to know what they’re doing and they need more wait staff and training. It was a train wreck. Our second waiter was better and we were able to get some food, however my friends ordered me a birthday dessert and they ended up charging me for it!! It then took them a long time to take care of our bill and valet.
Great new gem on Pitt's Oakland campus. The bartenders are true crafters and the food, view and service were all among the best Oakland has to offer.
I very much hope they are only going through growing pains. The restaurant was not crowded, my wife and I had a reservation, yet we were not served other than a glass of water by a runner in 25 minutes. We left before ever being greeted by our waiter.
A nice quiet oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Pitt and Carnegie Mellon. Limited menu, but a good place to relax on a college tour. Hamburger was excellent. Nice view of Pitt and Pittsburgh. They are still getting their act together as a new place. Congratulations on going live!
The staff was amazing! Our party shared a lot of the small plates! The detail on each place was very thoughout and beautifully presented!
The food and ambiance were excellent. Service was extremely slow. Our waiter was working very hard but was spread too thin. I'm thinking that this is growing pains for a place that was just opened two weeks ago. I will definitely give it another try.
Horrendous. The host and hostess at the restaurant check in station were rude- not the least bit welcoming. The service was extremely slow. The quality of the food was very disappointing. My $42 ribeye steak was too tough to eat. We will never return and will tell all our distinguished friends and family to stay away.
The food and service were excellent at this new venue in my neighborhood. I was so happy to walk to this new gem.
I was very excited to try this new restaurant. I will go back. But, there are a lot of bugs to work out. The room itself is rather strange. It's hard to tell if it's a cocktail lounge or restaurant. Probably this wouldn't be so disorienting at night. But, it can throw you off at brunch. The food was well prepared and good. However, the wait was astonishing--40 minutes for two eggs. Spirits and Tales has promise but it has to improve to be top notch.
Went first week of opening. It wasn’t bad, wasn’t great. Constantly got the feeling they were trying too hard. The radish toast was really good. Their roasted carrots had somany flavors that just didn’t work. Everything else we ordered was hit or miss.
Waiter was really nice. Timing of the food was perfect.had a nice 1.5 hour dinner. Which didn’t feel rushed or slow. Food came out at good times
I’ll likely try it again in a month or so to see how it’s going on
Jessica Lewis + Michael Goldberg = perfect team up
The team is an experienced one for a new restaurant in a newly opened hotel, and I got my best poached eggs in the recent ten months for breakfast.
