Tasty Italian menu. Reasonable service. Tables are packed together... high noise level.
Spiga has had a makeover primarily in decor. This has not been a success. The result is a hodge lodge of styles: seat look like something from the gay nineties; covering the lower part of cooking island and a Wall the Wood is now a blond pine like wood one would find in a Adirondack cabin. The pictures are multiple , cheap and without any redeeming features. The table cloth was white the setting pleasing with glasses etc but the whole effect was spoiled by a white napkin with blue stripes seemingly borrowed from a cantina.
Service was good.
Food was mixed. A veal cutlet smothered in mozzarella and red sauce was billed at ‘veal milanese’. It came with an Italian pearl couscous shaped in a cone. Very attractive with green vegetable ground up in it Alas the greenery was a very bitter peppery broccoli rabe which overwhelmed the tender mild veal. Dessert was lovely confection of cream etc
My dinner partner had a delicious chicken ravioli
We enjoyed our meal. Would reccomend.
Excellent selection, wonderful food, good service who gave us plenty of time to enjoy, gem of a spot. A true find. Everyone who works there seems passionate about the restaurant, and they work hard to make it delightful all-around. Wine list was changing but that caused us to try some terrific new wines.
We were excited for our second visit to this restaurant. Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectations. I reviewed this restaurant previously and gave them 5 stars - that's how good it was. We had 8 PM reservations and arrived 7:45. We were told by the FOH Manager that there was no place to wait at the bar - he suggested we leave and come back at 8:15. We did - but with me thinking this is a bit odd. Our party of 4 went and found a close by bar to have a drink and came back at 8:20. Table was being prepared. We sat down and server brought us bread. Then disappeared. 20 minutes later to take out food order. We ordered one app, 3 salads and 4 entrees. The one app came a bit after 9PM. I asked if the salads were coming and yes they were. 9:15 the salads arrived and at 9:20 the entrees. We did not even have time to digest the salad. Two of us ordered the special of the night seafood risotto. It arrived with a nice lobster tail, mussels etc. These were perfectly done. The risotto was not risotto but rice with broth. Worst I have ever encountered. Not creamy nothing resembling a risotto by any standards. When asked by the FOH manager if everything was satisfactory, sorry its not. He told me that I should have sent it back immediately and yes that was risotto. Really - I am hungry and its 9:30 for an 8 PM dinner res. Timing was definitely off for a Saturday night crowd. I did not see Chef/owner in the open kitchen that evening like I did the first visit. Manager did take something off the bill for the risotto. Ok thank you - but I wanted the experience of our first delicious meal there. Too many nice restaurants that are much closer to me - mostly likely not coming back.
Food was great. New decor is very nice. Service was great - felt welcomed from the beginning
Delicious food, cozy atmosphere and wonderful servers.
Outstanding food and service in a very neat setting!
What a phenomenal dining experience! We have been curious about this restaurant for s very long time, aware of its location. but never having the opportunity to try it until tonight, and it was our good fortune that we did. Every aspect of Spiga is best defined as the ultimate ‘personal touch’....starting with the genuine greening from the Manager, Jose, when one walks in the door, to the gracious and courteous waiitstaff.... as welll, we had the privilege of meeting Marisa Iocco, the Chef,
who introduced herself to us as well as other guests throughout the restaurant. What a pleasure it was to speak with Marisa about all aspects of Spiga....it is clear to see why this ‘family ‘ who comprise Spiga are all as wonderful and professional as they are, given the woman who so masterfully created this heaven-on-earth establishment. Perfection for us is a place where the lighting is soothing and the camaraderie between staff and guests embraces you from the minute you walk in. The noise level should have energy but not be overwhelming or distracting. The attention given to the guests should be personal, so one feels like the staff enjoy attending to your requests, and they should be informative about all aspects of the restaurant and the food offerings, including food preparation. Above all, they should be genuine and kind, truly interested in the well-being of their guests. There should be a sense of warmth and comfort felt by the guests, a truly relaxing experience. Spiga is the essence of all of these qualities. Finally, the real purpose for dining at a restaurant: the food.... again, Spiga is in s league if it’s own. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, and watching the various offerings as they were delivered to tables around us only made our decisions more difficult. Exquisite creations using fresh, simple ingredients, can only occur with an expert touch, and that is what we experienced...highly highly recommend you treat yourself to Spiga!
There is nothing negative to say about this restaurant. The food and ambiance was terrific. Wait staff was attentive, knowledgeable and welcoming. I believe the chefs and wait staff are all from different regions of Italy. We went as two couples for dinner on a Sat.night. I would suggest an earlier or later time for dining as it is small and very popular. Dinner at 6 PM was quiet, by 7 PM the dining area was full. They also offer lunch. This was truly authentic Italian food meticulously prepared and served with fresh and frequently homemade ingredients- mozzarella, ravioli, sausage etc. There was something for everyone on the menu and a wide range of options for big and small eaters. There were so many intriguing foods that we all agreed we wish they did a tasting of each item because it was hard to choose just one entree. One celiac in the group who required strict gluten free appreciated the options and knowledge of the staff. Presentation just added to a terrific experience. We all decided this is now our favorite place for for dining out.
It is tucked away in a funny location off Highland Ave but close to 128 and easy to find with GPS- but I’m not sure we want a lot of people finding it ;-)
Very authentic Italian food!
Spiga is back! Great new chef/menu and terrific new staff.
It was wonderful time and food was delicious
We had not been to Spiga in a few years and were very pleasantly surprised by the new version of this neighborhood restaurant. The food was delicious and creative. We particularly enjoyed the cod, the clams and the Timballo. All were available in small and large portions. The service was very attentive and charming - thank you! The décor had been updated since the last time we visited and is a pleasant and functional. The tables are well spaced and the four of us were able to carry on a comfortable conversation. The noise level was moderate and very acceptable.
Outstanding service! Jose and Sandra are awesome! Food is incredible!
Was not expecting this. Adorable restaurant with outstanding food. Really outstanding. Had a delicious Branzino and amazing pasta. Really excellent quality. Also had a super delicious Nebbiolo too. Great service. All in all if you are in the neighborhood I highly recommend them.
There for a birthday celebration. The food was delicious, perfectly seasoned and paced nicely. We enjoyed taking our time and trying many very nice things.
A hidden gem! Cozy ambiance and fantastic food.
Spiga has been in a state of transition the past year or two. It used to be one of the very, very best Italian restaurants in the western suburbs and has clearly regained its former glory. My wife and I visited recently and had a truly memorable dinner! Can't wait to return!!!
I had a Business luncheon planned for dining at Spiga. Everyone was impressed with the sercice, the ambiance, and the creativity of their meals. It was my fourth visit this month. I can't wait to return. Ask for Sandra, she is a member of the waitstaff, her service is outstanding.
Had been our favorite Italian restaurant.
They were closed for renovations for a few months.
This was our first meal there since.
Not sure if there is a new chef or what the reason for the change was.
Bread pudding was lackluster in terms of flavor, lamb skewers were kind of a joke as were the rosemary potatoes; just a baked potato with rosemary sprinkled on as opposed to roasted it with them. Service was great and the atmosphere was nice, but the food definitely left a lot to be desired. Was an anniversary but no mention was ever made. Probably won't be back because of the food alone.
Lunch at Spiga is a treat. The menu is varied and interesting with several specials each day. THe service was friendly yet professional. The presentations are beautiful and the food is yummy. Do not miss dessert.
Interesting menu, good food and reasonable prices. The short rib with mushroom risotto special was excellent, if a bit spendier than most items on the regular menu. The Carbonara had a twist to the typical recipe by the addition of salmon, and the chimichurri sauce on the lamb tasted super fresh. Definitely worth a return trip to sample more of the menu.
The food was nice, but I'm not very impressed. We ordered CAPE BAY MUSSELS, CHITARRA ALLE VONGOLE, SEAFOOD STEW. They were all seafoods. Overall they taste good, especially the seadfood stew. Chitarra alle vongole is lacking flavor. Probably my taste is different, but the food is absolutely authentic. If you are a fan of Italian food, then this would probably is the place for you.
Charming place. Cozy atmosphere. Excellent service and always good food.
Excellent meal. Great service. Very pretty atmosphere.
Wonderful service. A very warm welcome and great service throughout the meal. I was in town for a business trip and dining alone but I was made to feel very welcome and enjoyed Spiga a lot!
Unfortunately I think Spiga was better before the new renovations and menu! Sad to say it but didn’t have a great food experience here.
Hidden jewel off Needham St, you wouldn't know it there's unless someone told you. Close to my office and a favorite to bring customers to for a good meal. Not cheap but very tasty and very pleasant staff.
We were a party of 4 on a busy Saturday night. This was our first time here but certainly not our last! The restaurant was full so it's best to make a reservation. We were pleasantly greeted and suggested we have a glass of wine at the bar for few minutes for our table to be ready. They make very good use of the square footage in the restaurant as there are a lot of tables but you are not with the feeling of being crowded. Service was perfect. From the wine to the appetizers to the entree to the dessert we loved everything. And one in our group is a total foodie and had nothing but high praise for the food/service. Its an open kitchen which is fun to glimpse into the workings of a well trained/executed staff. There are many Italian food restaurants but I am happy that we were introduced to Spiga and can't wait to return.
We were disappointed in some of the food -- especially the Caesar salad, which had a partially cooked egg on top of wilted lettuce. Probably would not go there again although our waitress was very good.
The food was excellent (calamari appetizer, mushroom risotto with sliced veal special, and the three meat bolognese). My wife asked for a wine recommendation, and it was exactly what she was looking for. Our server was great, and we never felt rushed at all. We love Spiga and always are surprised at the value we get for such a great experience.
Every part of the the experience was really outstanding.
From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The service was exemplary. The menu offers a nice balance of traditional and innovative dishes and all of our selections were delicious. The pasta was fresh. I can’t say enough about this gem of a restaurant. I will be back very soon.
Was very surprised on the price of the specials, i expected the price to increase but not by $20 over regular menu items.
Spigas has been closed for a while and reimagined. The old Spigas was one of our favorite hidden gems, quiet, friendly, easy going atmosphere, outstanding food, outstanding service. The new Spigas still has great food there are many new dishes and everything is well prepared. The experience, however, has slipped a bit. It was very crowded and noisy. We arrived a few minutes early for a 7:30Pm reservation. They were unable to seat us until 8. Even on New Year's Eve one does not expect to wait a half hour in a drafty, chilly doorway when one has made a reservation and arrived timely. Our waitress, while very sweet, had to be waved over just to order wine and dinner. She asked if we needed more cheese on our pasta, I said yes, and then she forgot it and had to be waved over. We needed to flag her down again to get dessert, coffee and our check. While trying to get her attention for dessert we overheard her discussing specials at length with another table - we had not even been told there were specials. While the host was not unpleasant, we had the distinct feeling that we were not really wanted - perhaps because we do not speak italian as many of the other diners seemed to? We felt like beggars who had crashed a family's wedding. It was not a good experience, and the late eating and slow service caused us to miss a performance we had hoped to see that night. I am willing to believe that they haven't quite got the new place figured out yet and that the New Year's Eve rush caught them unprepared so they were not at their best. We will try them one more time when they are less likely to be busy and overbooked and see if things are any better.
Wonderful Resturant. Feels like you're in Italy. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great spot ... We're so happy to have Marisa back!
love this location, staff is friendly, food is good
