Spiga Ristorante Ratings and Reviews
we enjoyed our night out at Spiga. I had not heard of it and would not have gone if not for Open Table. Location is weird, behind some industrial buildings with no street visibility. Inside the decor is nice and cozy in this small restaurant space. Food was excellent with unique starter stews, I had the veal shoulder --- excellent definitely try one of the stews. overall all the meals were excellent.
The restaurant is AMAZING !!! The food is beyond excellent....everything is made fresh, you realise right away how fresh the ingredients are.
I’m from Italy. If you want to try a true Regional Italian cuisine I highly recommend you to go there. You will not be disappointed.
Last year Spiga was 5 stars for me. Now it seems they have a new partner and a new chef. I noticed a difference - I thought the food was better before the change. Previously, they offered on the regular menu a whole branzino in a salt crust cooked in the wood burning oven. It was to die for. Now it's gone from the menu. In its place they had a special the night I was there - branzino with chicken-filled agnolottti. It was a branzino filet, very bland, with grainy agnolotti with a filling that really did not go with fish. Disappointing to say the least - I was looking forward to my salt-crusted branzino from the oven for months!
I still gave 4 stars because my party shared the bucatini all-amatriciana as an appetizer, and it was very good, as was, I was told, the seafood stew. Otherwise based on my meal, it would be lower.
Wow! I was blown away by everything about the new Spiga! The restaurant had been closed for a complete remodeling. If you've been there before, you won't recognize either the space or the food. The authentic Italian food is absolutely outstanding. It's just like eating at the best restaurants in Italy, and better than anything in the North End. I particularly love that Spiga now offers small plates (similar to tapas), so we could taste a variety of dishes before our main course. Most of the servers are from Italy, and have worked with Executive Chef Marisa Iocco previously, so they are well trained. The servers are attentive and professional. I enjoyed watching the chefs in the open kitchen. Clearly everything is kept meticulously clean. The manager, Jose, is delightful and very friendly. I love the new, very comfortable padded chairs. We will be back often. An overall outstanding experience.
This was a surprising, quiet, little place with hearty Italian food. They had a varied menu, with rustic dishes that were authentic and regional, not the stereotypical Italian dishes that every other place has--I even found a type of pasta I haven't had outside of Italy. Service was great. I will be returning.
Outstanding server named Sandra. Could not have been more pleasant or attentive. Great bread. Eggplant parmagiana was outstanding. Appetizer was supposed to include mashed potatoes but did not. Soup special was gone by 6 pm. Overall lovely, warm experience. Would have enjoyed having chicken parmagiana, but was told the chef does not consider it an Italian dish and will not make it.
The food was ok but very rich. Even the roasted vegetables had a lot of olive oil in them.
The service was absolutely terrible! Our waitress piled up all the dirty dishes and put them down in front of my husband before removing them to the kitchen. She had no idea how to serve or clear. A major problem.
We used to love Spiga--but it recently changed hands with a new chef and a new menu. It was disappointing. The grilled romaine salad was underwhelming. The salad had grilled lettuce and a poached egg but as far as I could tell there was nothing for the egg to combine with to create a dressing of sorts and it was impossible to cut without asking for a sharp knife. The Amatriciana was boring. There was a piece of crispy pancetta or proscuitto stuck on the top of the dish, but nothing really in the sauce. The new bowls of stew that were the house specialties were pretty tasteless. The shining star, and the one holdover from the old menu is the salted caramel bread pudding. Definitely still a winner on that one. I hope this restaurant does better with time. But right now, I'd avoid it.
First visit to the remade Spiga. Great dinner and experience. Manger Jose (sorry, misplaced your card) and bartender/waiter Zack made us feel welcome and were very informative. Also enjoyed meeting chef-owner Marisa Iocco briefly on our way out. We ate a number of times at her Boston restaurant. Glad she have moved to Needham, where we live. We look forward to many future visits.
Spiga is the New Spiga- I miss the cozy Italian atmosphere that was so special to Spiga. The new decor is beautiful with tufted grey chairs but nothing special.
I go to Spiga at least every month and now I have to find a new Friday night restaurant. The new menu and food was so disappointing. We had the eggplant that was always amazing it now tasteless and boring. The yummy lamb are now Kebabs and also tasteless. Presentation is beautiful but the goodness stops there. Food was cold and service was just ok
Disappointed in the new Spiga. Food was mediocre. Beet salad was tasteless. Pasta was too al dente. Was not a fan of the new menu. On top of everything Service was bad. Took forever for a server to come over and acknowledge us. Forgot to bring us bread, never asked if we wanted another glass of wine. Told us what the desserts were, but never came back to ask if we wanted any. The check took forever to get.
The renovated Spiga was a disappointment. The renovation stripped the space of its Tuscan charm and the food was only so-so. Spiga was a favorite of ours in the past and we ate there often. Although the food was good, it is no longer the exceptional dining experience it used to be and not worth the expense. I doubt that we will go again.
We were very disappointed in this restaurant. We had been here twice before and really liked it. We arrive at exactly 6:30 for our 6:30 reservation. We were told that it would be "quite a long time before our table would be ready as the people had just ordered." This seemed strange, especially since there were 2 empty tables. The host fell over the people who arrived before us... but not us. He asked us if wanted to sit on the patio. At first we were a bit worried that it might be too chilly, but with the outdoor heaters, it was a nice quiet ambience. However, the problem was they forgot to send waitstaff out to us on a regular basis. We had service by committee, with some of the waitstaff bringing plates we did not order, they did not have the appetizer we wanted, and everything took forever. She told us she would be bringing bread in just a few minutes -15 min later no bread... and so forth -horrible service and food was fair, not nearly as good as we had remembered. We won't be returning.
A ONE HOUR WAIT FOR OUR APPETIZERS GOT OUR PARTY OFF TO A BAD START. THE PLACE DID NOT SEEM TO HAVE ENOUGH SERVICE STAFF-THE WAIT STAFF SEEMED TO BE DOING BAR DUTY AS WELL. THE LIGHTING COULD BE BETTER-MOST PATRONS RESORTED TO THEIR CELL PHONES IN ORDER TO SEE THE MENUS!
They messed up two of our four orders. We asked for plain fish and they covered it in stuff. One order came out 15 minutes after the others. Two of the four orders were really disappointing in terms of flavor - like we emptied salt on it just to give it some flavor. It looked nice and nice ambiance. Also they need to put the brick oven pizza in their dinner menu.
I have been going to Spiga for a number of years and it never fails to be a pleasure. The latest visit was on their lovely patio on a beautiful summer's evening. It is charming enough for me to pretend I was in Tuscany. We often have the same waiter --- Ronnie. He never fails to acknowledge us even at those times when he's not assigned to our particular table. He explains all the specials with great care, consistently remembers our favorites, and makes excellent recommendations. When I wasn't sure about which wine to choose, he brought out two to sample. The chef is often very creative, mixing an array of wonderful flavors so the food is always very tasty and beautifully presented. It's consistently a great dining experience --- relaxed and always satisfying. It's a place we keep returning to and are never disappointed.
Nothing beats Spiga's patio on a warm summer night. The spaghetti con vongole (clams) is the best I've ever had. Everything is exceptional, though - the seafood and the eggplant puff pastry are also favorites. This may be the best restaurant in the area for quiet conversation, but it's also lively enough to be fun with friends. The staff is extremely helpful, friendly and attentive. Their cappuccinos and espressos are works of art.
