Spice of America
Fantastic service and INCREDIBLE food. Really cool ambiance too. Excellent spot for some amazing Indian food.
Worst experience in a restaurant. Our waitress really didn’t know a thing about providing service. Would not recommend
This was our first time at Spice of America. It's on an uninteresting block of Market (though it's right across from Zuni) and doesn't look at all attractive from the outside. The inside is a different story, with comfortable seating and clean decor. The food was beautiful and delicious, particularly the Himalayan lamb curry. Service was friendly but sketchy. It took at least 5 minutes for the one server to notice me standing in the doorway, and she didn't know how to check me in for my OpenTable points. But she was friendly and helpful, and everything worked out. There was hardly anyone else there, so it was really quiet and relaxing.
Food and service was excellent! I would definitely go back. Pricing was also very reasonable and easy to get reservations.
Amazing food, flavors are so great. Once they work on service it will be difficult to get in here.
Best Indian food I’ve ever had!
Spice of America is a very pleasant place to dine before the ballet or symphony. The food is excellent, and the service is extremely pleasant, if sometimes a bit disorganized. It is also quiet enough to have a conversation in a normal subdued voice--a rarity among Civic Center restaurants. The prices are reasonable: two of us dines with appetizers and main courses with rice and naaan and one beer, for less than $60. WE have been there 3 or 4 times over the past year and agree that it is a terrific addition to the area.
The food was fresh and delicious. The service was cheerful and quick.
This place was fantastic. Easily one of the best Indian & Nepalese place that I've been to in recent memory. Prices are reasonable and service was great. The food was amazing. Strong rec.
This was our first visit since it's a new place. It was hard to choose what to have - everything looked good.
Excellent food. They have a multi-course special for $23 that includes a half-dozen items plus rice, naan and dessert. Although the restaurant's name may imply that the food is spicy-hot, it was not hot. Rather our group of four found the food with lots of subtle flavors, more interesting than your typical Indian restaurant. Plus it's a fairly short walk to the Symphony, opera etc. It's definitely where I'll go the next time I have a culture night out on the town.
This is a delicious gem! Excellent friendly service and amazingly tasty dishes. We went for an early dinner before a show at SF Jazz and appreciated the prompt service. Each dish was so flavorful - I recommend the heck out of this restaurant.
Love the spices and fun fusion combinations! I had the thali, and it was lovely to sample so many amazing flavors!
The interior of the restaurant is quite nice. Unfortunately the City of San Francisco government has allowed the street scene to be unsavory. The citizens must demand more from our city government.
I had the express meal for lunch. There were 5 choices. I chose the shrimp with vegetables. The food is good & a good bargain at $12. Look forward to going back again!
Go here now! Great food, really interesting and different flavors than I've had at other Indian restaurants. The curry omelet is a stand out as well as the cauliflower yogurt dish. You won't be disappointed.
Delicious flavorful dishes here and excellent customer service! Thank you for the decadent meal on a Friday evening and for your complimentary dishes for a special celebration.
If it hadn’t been for the reviews, I never would have noticed this place! Glad I did—they have an excellent $12 express lunch which is like a sample platter of many different dishes where you pick your own (veg or non-veg) protein. Will definitely go back.
great food. it takes a while to get it out of the kitchen, but worth the wait. just don't go when you are in a hurry.
Truly outstanding meal. One five course sampler and three selections, plenty of naan and a nice bottle of wine. Nicely done!
The wait was over 80 minutes for our food. We had reservations for a table of 9 and they were clearly unprepared for us. We did not get menus until we had been waiting for about 15-20 minutes. Service was very slow and we had to ask for everything. It was a Saturday night and they was very poorly staffed.
It took our food over an hour for our food to arrive (this was before the lunch rush - we were the only party in the restaurant for a while). Literally, our food arrived for one person at a time. It was pretty good but not great when it did arrive - certainly not good enough to justify the delay. Not sure if the kitchen was missing staff and just had an off day, but I won’t be back to find out.
The food was of excellent quality and delicious — especially the roast cauliflower. It seems like a family- run business and the staff were super friendly and attentive. It was our first time dining here and we will definitely be back!
Totally empty, but bad service. They forgot items and requests.
We picked this restaurant because the cuisine sounded intriguing. It did not disappoint. We cook and eat regional indian food frequently. The food itself was “the best I’ve had since I came to North America” (my English husband). The portions were reasonable and beautifully presented. The flavors made us think. Our server was very pleasant and answered our questions, understanding our interest in this cuisine. We ate before an SFJazz concert, and had plenty of time with a 6 PM reservation for a 8:30 performance. We will definitely be back.
Wonderful food and excellent service! Highly recommend.
The place was empty ... I mean empty except for us, which was hard to understand since the food was so good.
Small menu, done exceptionally well. Interesting twists on dishes you've had before and a few things you've never heard of.
If I lived in town, this would be a regular hangout.
Most exciting lunch of the year! This could be the best Indian food in San Francisco. The creative versions of traditional dishes were delicious. With the 10 minute walk from the Twitter building, this will become my go to restaurant for a reasonable priced gourmet meal.
Absolutely love this place. Great food and service. Been there three times now, have tried almost everything on the menu and everything is great. Check it out!
The food was absolutely terrible. The literally refried frozen chicken nuggets. The Amritsari fish was deep friend and completely bland. We left after appetizers. Awful! Our server had the worst body odor. We had to hold our breath every time he came by.
GREAT food. Nice people. Food arriving to the table was a bit slow, but worth the wait. Be sure to leave time - this is not a quick - in and out - kind of place.
The food and service here are excellent. Every dish was exceptional. I will ne returning soon
Very tasty and creative recipes
Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience! Restaurant decor, fascinating and fantastic flavor of the dishes, gorgeous presentation, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff
The food and presentation at this humble-appearing restaurant were outstanding, really top notch and imaginative, not everyday Indian cuisine. This restaurant deserves a better physical appearance, because its food is really special. It's right across Market Street from Zuni, though difficult to spot its signage (and I prefer this restaurant for its quality and imagination.)
It's always a nice surprise to eat somewhere that offers an amuse bouche. The fried kale was awesome! Although the selection is limited when compared to the usual Indian place, they take special care in the presentation and quality of their food. The service was wonderfully friendly though they never came to pick up our check at the end, they were fairly attentive during the meal.
the food was amazing, excellent flavours and spices, though we were not asked about the level of spice we wanted (at other Indian restaus we had been asked) However, the service was incredibly slow, at least 30 minutes to get our appetizers, and another 30-40 after that for the mains, I guess they make it from scratch for each order, the waiter was very nice, exchanged my wine when I thought it had gone 'off" . The ambiance was minimal. In spite of the great food, we will not visit this restau again. Sorry
We came back in early May for a pre-concert dinner. This time we went for the tasting menu, one of each - good decisions. Won't need to go into details on the food but will say that the chef's surprise choice for dessert was la piece de resistance, capping what was otherwise a terrific meal. We did decide skipping the first part of the concert so that we could more leisurely enjoyed the meal!
Great, imaginative and tasty Indian food— not your usual rum if the mill North Indian/ Pakistani place. Great versions of street food and complexly flavored and executed dishes. Desserts are amazing!
