Spice Modern Steakhouse Downtown Orlando - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
I go here often and I usually leave a review. Our service was pretty good and the food was good, as well. I got a free birthday dessert. The only thing I would comment on is the male host who wasn't very friendly. He seemed to have a stank attitude the two times that we spoke with him. He did wish me a happy birthday.. but even that sounded forced. I really love the food and location of Spice, but the wait staff needs improved. It wasn't always like this.
First visit for lunch. Nice breadth of menu items for lunch including a variety of sandwiches and salads. Very large wine list and decent number of craft beers.
The Montreal Reuben was very good. The burger and Turkey Brie sandwich were very tasty.
Will definitely return.
We were first sat outside, per our request, and it took over 10 minutes for a server to even come over to give us a glass of water. It then took another 10 minutes for our actual server to come and ask us what we wanted to drink. During this entire process, the table behind us got their drinks, and order, taken within 5 minutes. They were also seated AFTER us. We were trying to enjoy a kid free night out and it was ruining the mood to have such terrible service. We then moved to the bar outside and our new server/bartender was awesome. She was attentive. She knew her stuff. She made excellent suggestions. I would suggest if you are dining here, to dine at the bar.
I would also like to note, it was Saturday night, and the place was dead. There were only a handful of tables there with us. We did dine later - 9:00 PM - so perhaps that's why.
I come here all the time.. Anytime that I meet friends, I tell them to meet me at Spice because it's right by my house and the ambiance is impeccable. The food has always been really good and the drinks, as well. What I did not enjoy about my most recent visit was the lack of good service my friend and I received. I haven't seen this old friend in over five years and I wanted it to be special. She and I both were appalled by the server's attitude and service. We were almost afraid to ask for anything because when we asked for a refill of wine, she rolled her eyes and walked off. We both noticed her odd and hostile behavior. I would still recommend Spice to friends and family ... but maybe ask for a male server. I know that sounds awful and sexist but I am a female and this isn't the first bad experience with a female server at this location. One of the male servers had walked by initially and asked if I needed anything because my female server (the hostile one) hadn't come to my table in over 15 minutes after she sat me. At the same time, she was very attentive and obsequious to the table of 8 men behind me. I found that very odd.
We enjoyed this downtown location right on Lake Eola, with a splendid view of the fountain! A great halfway point to meet friends who live in SE Orlando, as we live west of town. Delicious steaks, great sushi, warm sake, and an attentive server. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience.
Living near Lake Eola, I had always wanted to try Spice being that it's in a fabulous spot and we can walk there! Sadly, our experience was far from fabulous. We found an apathetic, lackadaisical staff who seemed like they'd rather be anywhere else but serving customers.
Expecting a busy Saturday night, we made a reservation for 3 (3 hours ahead). We arrived surprised to see the place nearly empty. The hostess never asked anything about my reservation which wasn't a big deal at first because there was no wait. But anything she did say was a mumble as if it was too much trouble to speak. Despite numerous open tables outside, she sat us at a 4 top wedged in the middle of two other occupied tables. She ignored the previous table's dog bowl of water was still sitting base of my chair.
We sat there for a while before anyone approached us, and then a waiter who said he was filling in for our waiter took our drink order.
While those drinks, 2 glasses of wine and a beer, took 20 minutes and were HOT when they arrived... my $12 glass/red wine had that cheapish musty "this-bottle-should-be-thrown-out" taste... our table was uneven and too big for the area so we got bumped by any waiter/busser every time they passed.
When one waitress who bumped us actually said, sorry, I responded, "maybe it's a bad place for this extra chair because we keep getting hit?" She just shrugged, "its a bad place for this bulky apron" laughing at why she couldn't fit through the small space and walked off.
When we finally got a server to pay attention to us - and a side table opened up, we asked to be moved from our rickety spot. A few minutes later, the hostess sat another party at our old table with the broken leg.
In sum, maybe just showing up for happy hour, when you expect it's crazy would be fine... but for a quiet dinner and drinks, when you're willing to pay for a nice night... it was hands down some of the worst service I've seen wrapped in an overpriced and underwhelming product.
Calling this a "steakhouse" does not fully explain what this restaurant offers, as there are more non-meat choices than steaks. Sushi and other Japanese appetizers are offered in a wide variety. One could make a meal of it without having any meat, but that is the speciality.
The food was really good, sushi was great! Our service was very slow, sat for more than 5 minutes without being greeted, waited 15 min on my drink and it was wrong, the servwr would disappear for 20 min or more at a time, I think she was new. But the view was amazing, and the food and ambiance made up for where the service lacked. May return one day in hopes of better service, then it would be a perfect dining experience all around!
I was very disappointed in the meal itself. The steak my buddy ordered was over-cooked after he explicitly mentioned he wanted the steak done toward the rare side of medium. The steak was medium toward the well. And my Blackened Mahi - which we were told was one of the top dishes was dry and barely blackened. Again - overcooked! Dry fish is the worst. The only redeeming quality of the evening was the terrific service by a gal who was working there on her final day. She was delightful.
I cannot recommend this restaurant and will not be returning.
Had a terrible experience at Spice last night.
While the inside is loud and cramped, the porch outside (where I ate) is quiet and has a great view of Lake Eola.
When we got to our table it hadn't been cleaned, so we had to wait for someone to come clean it. After a few minutes the same thing happened to a couple sitting next to us.
The server was friendly but overwhelmed. The kitchen was running behind and a party that came in was told it would be an hour before they could get any food. The brie and my green beans were great, but my burger was overcooked and dry. When I went to the restroom a urinal was broken and there was water all over the floor.
As we were leaving there was some kind of argument going on with a guest over seating.
Spice has a great location, but seems to be very poorly managed. The kitchen needs to step it up, and the serving staff needs to pay attention to details.
