This evening was in stark contrast to prior visits to the establishment. On this occasion, the food was off (just not as delicious as usual), the service was abysmal, and our small plate style dining was so rushed we received all eight platters within 10 minutes each other. Even the waiter could tell this evening was going sideways and did attempt to make it better with a free glass of wine. However, a glass of wine just doesn’t make up for terrible service on a birthday dinner.
We were five people seated around 3 little round tables and there was never enough room to put down new plates. That set up is never ideal... little round tables are for two people a piece, not for groups.
When I travel I enjoy visiting restaurants associated with past Top Chef contestants. I always seem to get a fantastic, creative meal following this path. Spice Finch (Jen Carroll, Mediterranean-themed cuisine) was my most recent such success. My daughter and I had an appetizer (get the "trio of spreads" - nice variety), some small plates (in particular the baked cheese was amazing, be sure to get some freshly baked flat bread with it), and a few kabobs to share. The quality was very high and the flavors were fantastic; I have no idea how to replicate these tastes at home, but I guess that is sort of the point. Service was quick and attentive. Decor was pleasant but not noteworthy. Cost was moderate/high, appropriate for the food quality and creativity. We both are anxious to return for more!
Another great time at the Spice Finch. It was the first time we had David as a server and he did well. New for this visit was the chicken entree. Wow, really great. It takes a little longer as they cook the chicken upon receiving the order. David did well to let us know and properly set expectations so we enjoyed the small plates and chatted and dug into the chicken when it arrived as advertised. Really nice!
Food, drink and service just outstanding. However, still sitting in the street, although their outdoor chairs are much more comfortable than others.
We sat at the bar and the team was great. Very attentive and friendly. The food was excellent - know that the servings are not meant to be huge so take the opportunity to try a lot of different menu items!
So many vegetarian and vegan options. The green hummus and garlic yogurt were incredible, as was the tahini chocolate brownie. Wonderful manager.
Our first in-person experience at Spice Finch and it was really, really good. From cocktails, to starters, to entrees. Stand outs were the trio of spreads, green hummus in particular. Get the house-made Shabazi flatbread to accompany. So good. Also the Fruit & Feta, Roasted Cauliflower, and especially, the Baked Cheese. We enjoyed the chicken and lamb kebabs in addition to the whole fish special which in this case was Red Snapper. Tender and flavorful. Get a bunch of small plates. Great meal!
Our meal was amazing, especially the baked cheese with naan, the fries(best fries ever) and the chicken shish kebob! But the desserts stole the show...the brownie is one of the best desserts i have ever eaten....we fought over the last bite! This wasn't out first time there and it definitely won't be out last!
The ambiance of the restaurant was great! Some of the dishes were great portions and delicious including the breakfast flatbread and the frittata, however the NY Strip Steak Kabobs were one of the more expensive items and all that was served were a few very tiny pieces of meat served on only one kabob.
We enjoyed brunch in the outdoor booth which has nice fans and is enclosed on 3 sides. The avocado toast with eggs was very good. The regular menu is available also. Our server was helpful and attentive. I need to learn how to read QR menus but they gave us printed ones in the meantime. Host was very warm and welcoming. I will return and recommend it to others.
Absolutely one of the best meals we've had in Philly! We've been eating our way around the city and are serious foodies. Not only is the menu refreshingly creative, it's served perfectly (timing, sizes, selection, etc.). And, Spice Finch is reasonably priced. We've paid far more for less quality around Rittenhouse. We had an excellent server and a long chat with one of the managers. The restaurant is facing the same staffing challenges as everyone, so try to be patient, however I have to say we didn't wait excessively long for anything. My partner already went back the next day, testament to a uniquely outstanding place. Go!!
This experience was phenomenal!!! Can’t wait to be back!
I admit my prejudice against "small plates" and "family style", both of which are excuses for chefs who can't time plates for the entire table to arrive simultaneously. If you are going to define your service as "family style", you can't serve minuscule portions on small plates - that is not "family style" and it is not conducive to "sharing". When my main entree came (the lamb kebab) it was a chunk of meat on a stick and nothing more. I will not be back.
Outstanding in every way ! A very special place
We had great food. The outside booth was pleasant.
Considering this was a Jen Carroll restaurant- a bit disappointing. Food was mostly bland. We ordered every kabab, the mezze trio, the shrimp, the cheeses, and more. The shishitos were the only things with flavor and the mezze trio would be better if there was a larger proton- for 6 people we had to order 2 orders. They were out of the watermelon tomarle salad and the fatush salad was weak. The shrimp kabab seemed the best. Lamb and chicken kabab were weak.
We went for a 40th birthday and practically ordered everything on the menu. Disappointing.
We enjoyed several small plates for dinner in outdoor booth with a fan. Each dish was delicious - merguez sausage, shishito peppers, cauliflower, hummus, truffle dates. Our server was very friendly and helpful. There was noise from a parked truck, obviously not the restaurant's fault. Overall, an excellent experience.
Fantastic birthday dinner. One of my favorite restaurants in Philly
The food was quite good. The trio of spreads was definitely a winner. We shared the chicken, and it was a good sized portion--just not a stellar recipe. Great glass of French Sauvignon Blanc. Wait staff was pleasant, but again not truly attentive nor savvy. 4 out of 5, because we had a great time.
Thanks for a delicious Sunday brunch.
Nice spot and convenient since we stayed at the Warwick. Unfortunately the service was horrible we waited for ever and when we complained to the manager he didn’t do a thing no discount no nothing so we will never go there again. The food was good but over priced my son paid almost 20$ for one kabob that only had four little pieces of meat on it. Very disappointed
A flavor fiesta! We shared small plates and starters, and everything was outstanding - the baked cheese in a skillet, the chicken skewers, the fruit and feta dish, even the oils on the breads. And the burnt cream dessert recommended by our excellent server Hannah was light and delicious. The ambiance, music, and service are top notch from the moment you enter until you exit.
Another great night with Filipe as our server. We focused on the small plates. New this dinner was the Roasted Cauliflower with the Coriander cashew butter and pickled onions. Fantastic, and a new favorite! The trio of spreads was also exceptional, either with the berbere crisps or the sourdough flatbread. Fun to again chat with Mgr. Mark. Drinks, wine, small plates, a few entrees and dessert. Just perfect!
So glad we finally got to go to dinner there. Everything was wonderful. The food, the cocktails, the service……. We sat outside so it was a little sweaty and you are sitting in the street - hot town, summer in the City - but you do what you have to do.
I am an extremely picky eater and I loved everything we got! The chicken was amazing ❤️
Absolutely fantastic service. Food was delicious and we were seated on time!
Consistent great food, cocktails and service!
We came to kick off my sisters bachelorette and it was great!! Food is amazing, servers are kind and efficient. We LOVE spice finch!
Interesting and delicious food. Very accommodating, nice wait staff.
I’ve gone to spin every finch for happy hour and dinner before but this was my first time going for brunch. While I love the dinner and hh menu, the brunch selection wasn’t as great as great as I expected. But I’d def go back for dinner.
I had the grilled chicken kabob with yogurt dressing and greens. Tasty and ample. My wife shared a side order of spicy berbere carrots, bread, and baba ghanoush. The food was tasty. Good for vegetarians.
Due to the pandemic, we ate outside in a booth. The restaurant is on a bus line with its noise and the group in the booth next to ours was very loud. In pre-pandemic times, the inside of the restaurant is a better choice.
Food was good , portion size could be better
The manager, Nate, was awesome and so friendly. He checked on us, made sure our food had come out right (we had dietary restrictions at our table) and suggested perfect choices to accommodate everyone at the table. The food was great and the service was flawless. 10/10.
Reserved an outside table on a beautiful night for dinner. We were seated at small, uncomfortable bistro tables on the sidewalk--when several full tables in the covered "pods" were available. Asked our server to reseat us and he gladly obliged. It was the only glitch of the night. The space was charming and comfortable. Service was friendly and impeccable. We ordered the tasting menu and every dish was fantastic. Highlights: the house made pita chips, broccoli tabouli, babaganoush, asparagus with ricotta, and whole fish. The tasting menu includes bites of at least half the ala carte menu, so it's a great way to sample as much as possible. And you will want to sample it all! Every dish was light, inventive, and so delicious we were clinging to the remaining scraps on the plates when the server asked if we were ready for him to clear them. We didn't want to miss a single bite! Servers are happy to customize the offerings for those with food allergies or preferences. Cocktail program is small but memorable. (My frozen drink featuring tequila, mezcal, and hot peppers was delicious and packed a punch!) We were celebrating a birthday, so the server surprised our guest of honor with a tahini brownie that we shared. It might be the best brownie I've ever tried. If you order from the tasting menu, be sure to also order a dessert to split, because you might be a little disappointed that the "sweets" promised in the menu amount to a small date truffle per person. The truffle was the perfect finish--creative and surprising-- but wouldn't have felt like a real dessert had we not also enjoyed the brownie. Overall: great experience. I am looking forward to going again!
This was my first time dining at The Spiced Finch and certainly will not be my last! The food was amazing! I was dining with my daughter and my niece and we shared everything so we could have a taste! We got the Green Hummus with truffle (I’m not a big truffle fan so I didn’t have that but the girls said it was great), Shabazi fries (addicting), the cauliflower was amazing, Chicken Kebabs and the Shakshuka (my niece introduced me to this and it was an amazing mixture of eggplant, veggies, and tomatoes with three poached eggs served with naan). Just a fantastic meal (and company)!
Our experience at Spice Finch was fantastic! The food was delicious. We were a large party, and our waiter Albert was outstanding. He was engaging, attentive, and conscientious.
Our server Justin was fantastic. We enjoyed the Chef’s tasting menu and every dish was incredible.
Excellent food and service, as usual. Just the right attentiveness from the service staff. Very comfortable ambiance. But the food -- wow! The trio of spreads, the small plates, the sirloin kebab, the half chicken with muhamarra, and the perfect Hendricks G&T were all top-shelf, fun, and delicious. The burnt cream is the perfect ending to a spicy meal.
Love the small plates
