Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto Ratings and Reviews
The food was excellent. The service was okay could of been a lot better. We had to ask for more water. Server never came by after food was brought to see if everything was good or if we needed anything. After meal had to try and catch server to ask for dessert menu. Had to wait 20 minutes for dessert. Server walked by twice never contacted us on update about dessert. Had to catch server again for check. Waited 10 minutes for server to pick up check then had to find him again. Based on the service I would not eat here again. Poor service for price. I could maybe understand if the place was packed but there were several open tables.
We were a group of three veterans making our annual pilgrimage to their Veteran's Day special. We were quickly seated but not in the main dining room. A table of 5 ladies were next to us and had a loud and lively conversation the whole time we were there. Fortunately, we ordered appetizers because the entrees took what seemed to be a very long time. My fish and chips had a generous portion of fish (4 pieces) - too bad it was overcooked and dry. I've been coming to Spengers since 1974 and this was my least favorite visit.
This is a good place to go with a group because there is space and you can make reservations. The ambiance is classic and unchanged for decades, like an old fisherman's hang out. Lots of wood and portals and relics from a fishing era. However, the lunch menu is limited, the food is average, and the prices are very high for what you get. Best when you care more about hanging out than how much you will spend. Definitely not a bargain.
Went for Veteran's day celebration. I appreciate their free meal for Veterans. However, I was surprised that they didn't have a lunch menu for guests that were not veterans like they have in the past. My guest had to order off of the dinner menu. My meal was good and so was the service.
First off, there was literally a bug in my water. The food had no seasoning, needed salt on everything in order to eat it. There were NO crablegs, and the service was sloooooowwwww...oh and if u bring children (5 years old) they'll sit u in the back, even though the restaurant had plenty on tables.
This is an old place we've gone to for over 50 years. The food has always been a family favorite, but it was exceptional this time. After we got our doggy bag I realized it is now part of McCormick and Schmicks...quality! Our server was good at the beginning... and then did everything she could to ignore us... including turning her shoulders away from us and NEVER making eye contact! We had to literally go get her!
I asked to have a medium rare steak and it was well done with a small amount of vegetables and no mash potatoes. So I would say that the food portions were sparse but good. We all loved the atmosphere which was not only nostalgic but beautiful and the service was the absolute best!
I went to Spengers again despite the fact the last 2 visits were disappointing largely due to the slow service. I thought maybe that was because both visits were during the happy hour. This time it was Sunday lunch. The place was not busy but still it took 10 minutes before we were able to order drink and food. I really think they need to hire more servers.
I want to be fair to my server; I believe she did her BEST to take care of us. While the food was nothing spectacular, they did accommodate my request to swap creamy pesto with plain marinara sauce for less calories.
Good service and the swordfish was very nicely prepared. Even the calamari and crab/shrimp cake appetizers were particularly well done this time, not overcooked in the least. The manager should take note of how cool the dining room can be. Fortunately, our wait staff, Richard, noticed we were shivering and managed to ameliorate the situation. Glad to see they now have white mousse-filled chocolate bag like what you find at Jake's (Portland, OR). This was very good and the apple pie, a big favourite of my spouse, was excellent.
Coming here since 1971. Been a bit disappointed in recent visits, especially for the price. the Dungeness Crab Tower appetizer with avocado, mango, orange vinaigrette for $17 taseted fishly and not like fresh crab. I Had the swordfish (it was very good) $30 and mushroom risotto (way too much and dry oatmeal type of lumpiness) with a tomato confit that overwhelmed the fish - I scrapped it off and the fish tasted much better. Grilled asparagus $8 was good and firm. Spouse had a very good and generous sized crusted halibut. But the vegetables had too many quartered golden potatoes. The worst experience was that my spouse ordered an espresso and it came very light and watered-down. The barresta must have made it with ground coffee used from a previous espresso! We did not request a reorder. The main hostess was very nice and the server pleasantly did his best to serve us but seemed new and uncertain about the menu. I did not expect it to be the same as it once was (the busiest restaurant in the U.S. in the mid 1970s), with a strong Italian seafood menu, but even then, we will not be back as it was not worth the expense.
Service was so slow, we honestly thought they forgot we were seated, food was moderate at best, apparently chef is new and very strict with his dishes!!! no one can substitute any item when ordering?? asked for blackened got seared.
The place was almost empty, but felt like all the workers busy doing... nothing.
Sad, since I used to consider this place my FAV.
Experience was terrible! Went on a Sunday night for bday dinner. Looking forward to it. Have been going since I was young. They were out of everything we tried to order! Our waiter was very good though. But manager was not! Will not go back for quite awhile, if at all.
We had the special Scottish Salmon which was very good and also the Sand Dabs which is an old time entree that we like and was delicious. Spenger's Fish Grotto is a place from the past but love the sea faring decor and feels like home. Went on a Monday night when it was quiet and charming.
A couple of things on the Menu were not available. We have been to the restaurant since the 60's
We used to come thru the back door. It was always a big deal to go to Spenger's Fish Grotto. This was my Mom's and Dad's place to go. It was my Mom's 84th Birthday. She really appreciated the Crème Brulee.
Don't lose the Historic value.
I have fond memories of spengers great fish, having been raised in the Bay area, so I took my husband to Spengers on our anniversary getaway. The hostess didnt want to seat us at a quiet table to the side upon request because it wasnt set yet. 2 minutes later she sat a couple with kids at the table. We sat at a noisy table, had great lobster bisque and clam chowder, hard stale french bread that didnt soften in the soup!, mediocre hard fish n chips, better sandabs with tasteless mash potaties & dry hard veggies, a bored but polite unattentive waiter. We left with indigestion and convinced we wouldnt come back again unless we had grandkids with us who wanted clam chowder. Noisy. Nostalgic. Medoicre food and service. Great soup and still fun nostalgic atmosphere. We would go elsewhere next time for a special getaway dinner. Was disappointed. Sorry
This isn't my first time going to Spenger's ,my wife and I have been going there since we were small children so disappointed ,The service was terrible , the bread when we got it was stale half way through our meal, wasn't even warm , the server didn't get to our table until after 10mins of sitting at our table, getting refills for our Ice Tea and coke took for ever , I get better service at Taco Bell and better food and funny thing was there was hardly anyone in the place what a joke they should close the doors....and dirty gross.....
For $40 I expected the Alaskan Halibut to be fresh but it sure did not taste like it , more like previously frozen, warmed up. A quarter of the Roast potatoes were not fully cooked and the only other veggies on the plate were 2 small postage stamp squares of red pepper and one small square of onion. The Calamari was okay but unfortunately my favorite draft beer was having problems so had to substitute for another. My girl friends meal did not fare much better and we spent a lot of $$$. Will be a long time before I darken the door of this establishment again.
