Speisekammer Ratings and Reviews
I have been here a bunch of times and loved it each time! The food, beer, atmosphere and service is great. It is a bit slow as they are always busy but the food is worth the wait. It's noisy so if that's not your thing ask to sit in the back area. The main winners: Potato pancake and pretzel with beer cheese...drool
We ordered a variety of starters (potato pancakes) and mains (schnitzel, turkey schnitzel, meatloaf and onions) for a family and friends get-together. The potato pancakes were just okay with the applesauce being pretty basic (bland). I can skip this next time and make it at home since they weren't to our liking. The other dishes were quite flavorful and filling. The overall restaurant vibe was definitely lively with the band playing. However, the noise level made it difficult to enjoy any conversation...and we were in a separate room. I can only imagine trying to eat and carry conversation in the main dining room and bar area. Overall, not a bad choice for German food in the East Bay.
In Germany, each brewery has their own unique glassware or mug for serving their beers. Spaesekammer has managed to acquire this glassware to serve whatever beer selection you choose in the genuine glassware from that brewery...very cool. The food is quite good and reasonably priced.
I took my 8 year old here on our quest to discover new food. We ordered several appetizers including the potato pancakes, the Fisch-Platt (variety of fish with salad), and the KÄSEBRETT
MIT FRÜCHTEN (fruit and cheese plate). We ordered a small size but they were still really big portions. We didn't care for the potato pancakes (I thought they were mushy inside) but everything else was good. My 8 year old liked the pickled herring - who would have thought. We ordered the JÄGER SCHNITZEL for dinner. Neither one of us cared for the Spätzle but the SCHNITZEL was good. To be fair, I've never really cared for Spätzle so I don't think that it was a reflection on the restaurant. Another person with us ordered the Flat Iron Steak which was the special. They said that it was very good. We of course had Strudel for desert. All in all, it was a fun experience and we will go back.
Service is very good. We asked to be seater closer to the live music and they were very accommodating. The food is good... wish they had more vegetarian options. I think there could be more salads and fresh vegetables. Their vinegar salads are too vinegary.
The only German restaurant that I know in the Bay Area - food is authentic and consistent. Lots if good draft beer choices. Almost always have sauerbraten which is always great. My partner had rouladen which was also good
We had a wonderful time celebrating my husband's birthday here. The food was fantastic as were the drinks. We had everything from the cheese and meat plates, to pretzels with the cheese sauce, the tomato salad, the meatloaf, the weinerschnitzel, the jagerschnitzel, the sauerbraten, and the lamb shank. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Our server was extremely patient with our large group and I was super happy to be able to book a table for 10 people on relatively short notice (3 days). And A++ to the restaurant for having good air conditioning in the back room!! That was tantamount to our experience, since the food can be heavy, you don't want to eat it while your all hot and sweaty. I will certainly think of this restaurant again for future special occasions. This place is truly a gem!
Speisekammer was a fun experience but way beyond our budget for informal dining. The bill for five people to eat lunch was about $160 before tip for a lunch where three of our party ordered beverages and one ordered a desert.
That said, the atmosphere was cordial and informal. The wait staff was great. The food was tasty and of a style not commonly found in Northern California.
Bottom line ... we had a great time. We'd recommend the restaurant for friends wanting a special dining experience (and warn them about the prices). However, we're unlikely to dine there again ourselves.
This place is an absolute gem. The food was amazing, and exactly what I wanted. The beer list was impressive, as was the option of ordering a 2 liter "Das Boot". I don't live anywhere near Alameda, but I will definitely be going back.
Also, as the occasion was my birthday, we all got to share some apple streudel and schnapps. Speisekammer has a lifelong fan.
Always a great time at Speisekammer! The food is so good, made with love and presented in a which that makes you feel like your family! The ambiance is great too. The BEER....love it. even the drinks (I HIGHLY recommend the Hope Floats - it is so crisp and refreshing) are awesome!
Haven't been here in a while, but after this food/this night, will go back again soon! Fries were the best I've ever had (with multiple dipping sauces). Special of the night -- pork shank marinated in apple juice -- was outstanding. Everything our party of five ordered was very much enjoyed. Best of all was the free live music and the super service (our multi-lingual waitress was on top of our every need).
