Looking forward to a big night with our newleywed kids. They sat us by the bathroom. The furthest corner from anything. We didn't know it was the bathroom because there was a curtain and no sign. But as the night went on the traffic by our table was busy. I thought going through OpenTable, we would have had a better table.
Even though it showed up written correctly on the final bill, one of our plates came out with the wrong meat on it(one covered in gravy). When returned, then it was at least a crispy schnitzel, but pork rather than veal. Now, though, the spaetzle had become fried potatoes. They graciously brought a side of spaetzle, but hmmm-get it right the first time? The cabbage rolls were ok-so well-cooked that the cabbage was thin mush. Mashed potatoes had no texture at all-whipped to death. The dessert list was small and nothing excited. How about a dark chocolate cake rather than German chocolate (which is NOT a German thing)? We reserved, but our table was right in front of the bar, so before the music began, people were standing close by.
Great food.... beer...drinks...
Great food n beer selection
The service was excellent. The waiter explained all about the beers n got as extra bread etc since we were all hungry. It was my birthday celebration n they made it special.
Great food and great service! I would highly recommend this restaurant.
noisy with absolutely no parking. food was just ok. expensive for what you got
This was our second lunch reservation and found to be with the food quality and service to be consistent. Have nothing negative say. Love everything on their menu. Excellent waitress. Would go back in a heartbeat
Met friends for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Arrived at opening 11:30 and felt silly for making reservations but the place soon filled up (not even a game day!). Great bar and of course German and other beers on tap from both local and from around the world. We shared a large meat plate (all their greatest sausage and pork hits) and a large mixed German salad plate (four different salads, all reasonably healthy). Finished off sharing the best strudel i've ever had (including places in Germany). Good value for the prices too. So fortunate to have Speisekammer local in Alameda!
Service was excellent and the drinks and apps arrived quickly. Hostesses warm and inviting.
Very flavorful and savory dishes, comfort food but with a pop. Fresh ingredients, deelish sauerkraut and sausage. Told my workplace in San Leandro, and they've gone 4 times now since November.
Love this place! Went for restaurant week lunch
We keep coming back here 5-7 times a year. It’s always good. Not many places have a dozen plus German beers on tap, cocktails, and tasty German food. Three generations in our family love it.
Convenient location for meeting with family and friends from Bay Area. TV’s convenient tu not intrusive. Food and service was very good, we’d return for that and the beer. Would like to go for dinner and live music. Potato pancakes, lunch special (restaurant week), pretzels and pastrami sandwich is highly recommended. The salmon salad was also a hit.
I am tempted to say "fast food" due to the service. We were seated promptly and ordered a bottle of wine. Took a bit of time to show up but that was fine as they had a good band playing. We ordered and specifically told the waiter to take a long time as we were not im a hurry and wanted to listen to the music.
Our salad and soup arrived quickly - my wife took one bite of her salad and I was on my first spoon of soup when our main course arrived. So we squeezed those onto our small table for two and let them cool while we finished our soup and salad. I probably should have sent them back.
We finished our meal before the band finished its first set. So much for a leisurely evening.
I will probably try again BUT will not order our main course until we are finished with the appetizer. Lesson learned.
Authentic German food (mostly for meat lovers but they do have at least one seafood and some vegetarian options), generous beer selection, great ambiance and friendly staff. In addition they have live music Friday and Sat nightS. We visit frequently and are rarely disappointed. They can accommodate large groups And weather permitting they have patio dining reminiscent of a Biergarten. Weekends are busy so to get a good table especially for larger group make a reservation.
A must visit each trip to Alameda. Last time a vegetarian friend grabbed my Jager schnitzel and was wolfing it down before I could warn her. Great selection of German bier. The flour-less chocolate cake is superb.
The veal was VERY TOUGH. Very disappointing and I have been here many times.
Food is always good. Place always seems busy. We went on the early side so no problem getting a table.
Nice restaurant. Good food. Large portions
Great food and service!! Fun, Fun, Fun!! Thanks!! Saturday night music was very good also! The vom fass beers rocked!
Love Speisekammer, the food and beer are always great.
Fantastic place with great authentic german food! Love it!
Stopped on our way home from the airport for a wonderful dinner after a long flight. We've been meaning to try Speisekammer for some time, but just have never done it. We will be back! I had the spaetzle with ham and it was delicious and enough for two large meals. My husband had the goose and thought it was really good. He also took a good size portion home to have for lunch the next day. Our server was very attentive as was the busser, who asked multiple times if there was anything else we needed.
Phenomenal as usual. Speisekammer transports you to a comfortable, old world setting with delicious food and a great selection of imported beers, local brews and yummy cocktails.
The food is always great. The atmosphere is very inviting. Lots of families with kids, all well-behaved. Great staff. Love it!
This is my favorite restaurant in Alameda and one of my favorites in the Bay Area. If you are looking for comfort food and drinks that are always changing, then this is the place. I have come here 14 or 15 times and they never disappoint. It is a great place to bring a group or your kids.
Fun, festive place for dinner with a group. Great starters, bread and pickles. Entrees were a bit bland, but that’s the nature of some German dishes so I can’t say if it’s the chef’s fault. Service was outstanding! Would go again and stay for the live music.
Great beer selection, delicious authentic Bavarian dishes.
I have been here a few times and every time it is delicious, I have never had any problems. The staff is very good at meeting anyones needs and wants.
Very nice find!! Always looking for food German food & this was a great find! We’ll be back.
We enjoy dining at Speisekammer. Good food and German beer. We had a ringside seat to watch the entertainment setting up; unfortunately we couldn't stay to hear them play. Maybe next time.
I have yet to find a better German restaurant in the Bay Area. Decent vegetarian choices as well.
Eating here is always a treat, but I love the winter specials and this year’s goose was excellent.
Native German here. Fruit plate, Wienerschnitzel (from veal), potato salad, drinks, it was all great. Service was wonderful.
Wonderful restaurant, just like being in Germany. It was great to have a true German dinner here in the states. The restaurant is bigger than it looks but still fills up on the weekends. Hard to hear others speak on a Saturday night, but still a great overall experience.
Speisekammer is a great place to meet up with friends for great food and atmosphere, just remember to bring your appetite, the portion sizes are quite large!
We had a very nice time but it was spoiled by the fact that we had a reservation at 7:30 and waited until 8:30 to get a table - one that was next to the entrance on a cold night. While we were comped the appetizers (very nice), staff wasn't very apologetic, aware, or attentive while we waited TOO LONG for a table on my mother's birthday. A buzz killer.
If you are very casual and don't care, then enjoy. The food is good.
We really enjoyed Speisekammer! It’s a cozy place with lots of authentic German touches without being dark or gloomy. There was an excellent selection of German and local beers and wines. We have a lot of experience with German food, one of us having grown up in a German family. So trust us when we say the food is very authentic, freshly prepared, and plentiful...come hungry! For appetizers we had the Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), which were delicious but we felt the apple sauce was oddly gloopy (cornstarch?), and the Fischplatte, which was very fresh and provided a little salad. For entrees we had the Sauerbraten (very tender marinated and slow cooked beef), which was very good and had a nice sour tang to the sauce as it should, and the Wienerschnitzel which was also hearty and very tasty and came with some of the best roast potatoes I’ve had at a restaurant (courtesy of onions and bacon). Our only disappointment was the red cabbage that came with the Sauerbraten was also gloopy with cornstarch: not needed and a little out of place. We rinsed the leftovers before reheating the next day and they were wonderful. Service was courteous and attentive without being intrusive. Parking is a little limited/tricky so allow time to find street parking. We will definitely be back when in the area.
Upon arrival the hostess was very welcoming, and we were seated right away, even though not all of our party had arrived. Our waiter was super friendly and knowledgeable about the foods. The meal and drinks were outstanding. This was our second time there will continue to come for special occasions.
Drove across the Bay with a friend who loves German food as much as I do. We made a reservation for lunch and were seated right next to the cozy fireplace. While everyone else was on a buying binge for the holidays, we had the most wonderful Wienerschnitzel I've had outside of Vienna. TO DIE FOR! The side potatoes were heavenly, and my friend subbed hers out for spaetzle that she enjoyed as well. I had the draft Bitburger Pilsener and my friend had an Amber Hefeweizen that our server brought her to taste first against a sample of the usual one. Apple strudel for her and Mohnstrudel for me - yummy!
I will be back and soon for this fine food! I cannot wait to try the sauerbraten and other awesome things on the menu. If you like German food, or even just good food, check this place out. Would love to come back in the evening when there's live music, or on a warm day to sit outside in the biergarten.
The only minimal downside was that we parked in the slim alley of parking area immediately to the right of the restaurant thinking that it must lead out to a street on the other side. It does not! We had to back out onto the street in a very narrow alley and could not see the traffic coming. Thank goodness new cars have cameras everywhere. It was pouring and difficult to see. Perhaps they could add parking suggestions to their website? This was a tiny headache in the end, but I would have appreciated knowing about it in advance. Danke!
