Great ambiance and decor, lovely dinner and drink options, and we had a very fancy and romantic Valentine Day dinner. It was thoughtfully curated and not overtly themed as German, so you don’t feel as if you’ve stepped into a Bavarian pub. Fantastic food and service was attentive even on the holiday.
We didn't get menus until after several minutes when we saw the waitress go by that we asked for one. The food was a long time coming and then it was disappointing. I have had really good German food before, this was not it. Unless you just want a beer and pretzel, it's not worth your time.
Service got slow at end of night, maybe they just didnt see empty glasses but they sure picked up empty plates fast... Food was AWESOME and everything else was from great to acceptable
Hidden secret in Alameda
Great to watch sport and enjoy good beer. And good food
Hearty comforting German food in a cozy relaxed atmosphere. The employees are very friendly and recommended we tast some beers before committing to ordering a specific type. I have taken my whole family here and will come back for sure.
Good comfort type food but very slow service (35 minute wait for entrees) and quite noisy. Waitress and staff were both friendly but no one came to say why the food was so late - so maybe this is the norm?
It's hard to plan a date night with two toddlers, but this place was perfect to have a family dinner out. Kids loved it as usual.
On Sunday Jan 27 the food was superb as usual. Service was slow, slow, slow however. And the background music had the bass turned up so loud it was mind-numbing. Parking here is terrible. I almost needed an Uber to get me from where I parked to the restaurant.
The food was solid, tasty German fare. I would have regarded the service as slow had there not been entertainment, but with the band it was fine. Parking is problematic. Plan extra time for it or Uber if you are pretty close.
Love this place! The food is GREAT! Our server really took care of us. I introduced this place to my boyfriend and he loves the food and beer. You gotta try the pretzel with their mustard. It is delish!!! This is our go to place on the weekends.
My wife was watching a food show and this restaurant was on the show. It had good reviews so off we went. It was over a hour drive once we arrived we found out there is no restaurant parking, went inside and asked where do you park was told parking is a problem finally parked in the residential area. The food was good for the price and the portions were big so you won’t go away hungry. Service was ok maybe that was due to how busy they were. Yes I would recommend but make sure you make reservations and give yourself extra time to find parking not sure we will drive the distance again due to no parking. But if you like German food you can’t go wrong
Always a great experience!
We had a great time at Speisekammer! The food was excellent and they had a large selection of German beers. We tried 3 beers and they were all great! The staff was friendly and attentive and also knowledgeable when we asked questions regarding the food and beer. Will go back for sure.
The food and service were exceptional as always. Diners near us were a little louder than usual which made it difficult to have a conversation with others at our table, but that’s not the restaurants fault just rude young people.
This place NEVER disappoints. Amazing food, and excellent bar with a huge selection of German beers, and a cheerful, knowledgeable staff guarantees a good time. Been coming here since the beginning and will continue that trend. Well done, Peter, Cindy, and crew!!!
Good food. Try to get their specials. I always go back to their schnitzels and the German potato salad. Good drinks too
Great meal for restaurant week here in Alameda. Brussels Sprouts appetizer, wild boar hunter’s pie and beef goulash (stew), and their famous apple strudel, ice cream, and schnapps for desert. We go hear a lot, but the restaurant week meal is always a hit (and a good deal)! We washed it down with Bitburger beers!
A favorite neighborhood restaurant...great food....never disappointed.
Slower service due to only one oven being operable. Would have been nice to know immediately so we could have ordered appetizer, rather than finding out 40 minutes into 45 minute wait from ordering until dinner arrived.
Speisekammer has excellent German food and provides an authentic atmosphere. We highly recommend this restaurant!
Rick is a fantastic bartender! I love their creative Specials menu too.
Nice, friendly place to meet up wth family, friend. Good German fare.
Great brussell sprouts & red cabbage. I liked everything else we tried, but wasn’t blown away. Service was beyond excellent. We were made to feel very welcome. Brought me a piece of apple strudel with ice cream for my birthday, it was actually on 1/5.
Will definitely come back although it’s a bit of a drive from San Jose.
Pretty noisy but still a fun time & fine meal.
Good food & service. Sitting by the fireplace was lovely.
We enjoyed the ambiance and liked our meals. We don't eat German cuisine all the time, but when we do, we will be going here. Definitely recommend you give it a try.
Great community atmosphere. Food and waitstaff wonderful. Seating by the fireplace a plus!
We learned about this restaurant from KQED's Check Please program. The TV review was spot on in lauding this place. Healthy options are available and delicious, but if I went here often I'm afraid I would weight two tons!
We were celebrating my birthday. The service and food was wonderful ! We were able to take our time and really enjoy lunch. I appreciated the apple strudel and vanilla ice cream free of charge.
Surprisingly good, hearty food. warm, welcoming atmosphere. Unpretentious, neighborhood restaurant that's very inviting. Great beer and Riesling selections.
The busboy kept trying to take my soup if I would set my spoon down and took the basket of bread though we weren’t done. I got the roast chicken and it was so dry I couldn’t even cut through th skin with a knife. I said something as the busboy asked if he could box up my food. I said I couldn’t eat it as it was so dry I couldn’t bite into it. He didn’t say sorry, just said you want me to just take it then? They did have the Krampus and St. Nicholas which was fun.
It was a busy night but the 1 hour wait for our food was a bit much. Kindly we were given two drinks free. But the goose special and the sauerbraten, what is that meat? Overcooked, dry. The red cabbage with catsup of all things was peculiar. Check Please patrons raved but I think they were all drunk.
parking is challenging
excellent beer and appetizers
main course did not meet expectations as it was hyped up by reviews. next time will just have have sausages.
My family has eaten here on a number of occasions and have yet to have a bad experience. The staff is friendly and professional. The food is ever changing and evolving.
We just love this place and tho we are from the peninsula we think it is worth the drive. The food is great and it is a fabulous neighborhood Gem...Just wish it was closer to where we live in Burlingame, as we would probably be there at least once a week!
Professional waiter, excellent service, gourmet German food
The potato pancakes are to die for though I think they have shrunk in size over the years. attentive service and food comes out at a nice pace. Gravlax and sausage appetizers very good as well.
The selection of beer is very different from local bars and it is very good. The German food was also very good, indeed! The seafood platter was particularly good. The 4 of us all ordered different things and everybody was happy. The dessert was worthwhile, especially the one that was served with locally made cinnamon ice cream. yummy!
Come here every year for my birthday. It's warm and inviting...and delicious! I end the night with a rudesheim and a shot of apple scnapps! Highly recommended! And good for groups. So much love to this place! Top 3 in the East Bay!
Nice place, with plates of German cuisine but on American style, I'm from North Italy and Tavern a lot to Germany, missing their party and family spirit! Good quality, missing some important German plates! I'll be back for sure
It took 40 minutes to get our food. The waiter had 3 big groups he was attending to and never came by to check with us. The groups were so loud I couldn't hear the person next to me talking.
I liked the food, even though they were out of chicken, tri-tip and goose. I don't think I'll go back there, though.
