The food and service are great. The parking is challenging.
The 6pc potato pancakes appetizer @ $10.50 is a bit high for an oversized potato chip. A soft potato filling on the inside with a crunch on the outside would have sufficed. It did leave a big mess trying to cut into it.
The Stuffed Cabbage is the main reason we came. It is the 2nd time we came and Speisekammer was completely out. If an item such as this is so popular, more of it needs to be prepped for the evening service. The waitress also did not advise us of the unavailable item until taking our order. It would also be helpful to be advised of this so that those who are committed to one item can make another choice. But again, the best solution is to have enough of an item on the menu to serve everyone.
We had our reservations @ 7:15PM and left about an hour later. At 8PM, the music began. It was nice for the atmosphere. We would have been nice if they started earlier. Also, if a group can play live German Folk music from the Alps with an accordian that would make it even more authentic.
The Peach Cobbler was one of the best desserts we've ever had.
Hope this critique help makes it better.
We visited Speisekammer on July 5. We had a number of dishes, all of them excellent. Servings were good-sized, which meant good value for the price. Service was exceptional. The restaurant has live music on Fridays and Saturdays, so the noise level was moderate. We were still able to carry on conversations while the band played, all the same. Highly recommended.
This was my second time at Speisekammer, and just like the first time, we waited forever for drinks and food. I like the ambience, and I like the food, but the restaurant is way understaffed and simply isn't able to serve people in a reasonable time.
It was my first time at Speisekammer and I was very happy with the food, service and location. I will return again! The other guest in my group also enjoyed the lunch.
Everything was great, though the waiter was a little distracted. He kept forgetting things, though he was always pleasant. The band was VERY LOUD, but also very fun.
Delicious entree, best dessert chef around, terrific service.
Celebrating birthday with family.
surprise, great wine list, too! six happy diners with different tastes and we were all happy-- start to finish
Excellent authentic German food and drink. The only problem is th absolute lack of parking. My wife and I are both handicapped and it is a major problem when we muscular two blocks away.
This restaurant never ceases to delight. The food was superb. Service was a little slow that day, but it was Father's Day so it was understandable. And the meal was worth the brief wait. My friend's JÄGERSCHNITZEL VOM SCHWEIN was in an incredible sauce. My SCHWEINEBRATEN was moist, fork tender and full of flavor. Best Sauerkraut ever!
GREAT AUTHENTIC GERMAN FOOD, Big selection of beers and the coffee was good too. We had a very attentive server with good suggestions for pairing. Parking is a little difficult so go early! A fun experience.
Consistently good. Amazing beer selection. Great staff. Feels like you are in Germany.
Ya Guud! Been too long since last time, will endeavor to NOT make same mistake otra vez!
Was our first time having German food. What a place to be initiated at. The food tasted amazing. The Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) were cooked to perfection and they come with a tart applesauce. Tasty! The Kleine Nürnberger Bratwürstchen (petite sausages) were tasty and come on a bed of sauerkraut. Made for sharing. The Sauerbraten entree was tender and the sauce/gravy was tasty as could be. We also had the Jägerschnitzel Vom Schwein entree. The pork cutlets were moist and the beer mushroom gravy is absolutely amazing, I kid you not. We had the apple strudel for dessert. YUM! I guarantee it won't disappoint.
We enjoyed a rare warm night in Alameda so sat outside. We waited a bit for our waiter but once we connected he was very attentive and friendly. You can't beat those potato pancakes and spaetzle.
We were seated inside, but it grew very much too hot by the middle of the meal. The food was well prepared, but took over 45 minutes to arrive. The drinks were excellent and the portions were large.
I always recommend Speisekammer. Great food, great beer, great atmosphere.
A great German pub. Excellent food and huge beer selection plus a full bar. Portions are huge. We always end up with leftovers for a second meal at home. Fish platter appetizer is not to be missed. Ask to sit in the back for a quieter experience when they have live music in the bar area. Highly recommended.
Great German food.
Good German restaurant- very authentic 'Bier Garten' vibe. Nice traditional bench seating garden patio out front. On a side street so not too busy. Street parking and small free parking lot.
Food was excellent and very good quality. I'm the daughter of a German Mom and have been to Germany many, many times. German pretzel shipped in from German bakery in Vacaville every morning (!) delicious. Best one I've had in the US. Spinach salad with smoked trout- delicious. Weinerschnitzle, excellent. Beer- of course excellent. Nice server. Nice, relaxing, positive atmosphere. If you are looking for an authentic German restaurant, I recommend. I'll bring my Mom here :-)
We had a great time as we were celebrating my daughter-in-law‘s new job which starts tomorrow. Marco is an excellent server and our food came quickly and we had all the help we needed in a very timely manner. We had a great time.
This is the place of the three of us have enjoyed twice in the last month. We previously came on April 29 and we enjoyed it so much then that it was an easy pick for us to come again tonight.
Food and service fabulous. We were seated next to a very loud 3top that was so very loud. I will definitely go back hopefully at a quiet table.
Wonderful authentic german restaurant. We have very few traditional german restaurants here in the bay area...fortunately for us, Speisekammer is close enough that e can make it a regular part of our dining experience, while being good enough to make it a rewarding experience. We started our meal with the appetizer Kleine Nurnberger Bratwurstchen, six small wursts served with sauerkraut. For my entree I ordered the Schweinhocke, (special item not on the standard menu.) My wife ordered the small Wiener Schnitzel with roasted potatoes. Both meals were prepared well. There are many beers available on tap, I selected a Kolsch ale, my wife went for a french Sauvignon blanc. All in all, you can't go wrong if you like good german food.
Does what it does uniquely and well. A must meal each time I’m in Oakland.
I enjoy the food as does my wife. The bread basket could use a pretzel bread and should come with a bit more butter. But it is good and they will bring more.
I love the flavor of the Jägerschnitzel, but even the full size is not quite enough food (hence, the need for more bread).
That said, I probably need to order an appetizer first. I don't do that at most restaurants though, and seldom come away still hungry.
The parking is terrible and I have to be ground guided to get out of the lot.
But with all of the minor issues, we keep coming back because the taste of the food is just that good.
all good. german wife happy..............................................................................................................................
Excellent food. All kinds of schnitzel, sausages and cabbage . And yes potato pancakes a delish! Very friendly people too!
Have eaten here before and enjoyed the food. Took my parents for some good German food, they had lived in Austria for a number of years and really loved the restaurant and food. Will take them back again.
Gotta love this little slice of Bavaria in Alameda. Food is good and the service is always very good. Recommend for a fun place to take out of town guest.
This is a great jem in Alameda. If you love German food, you need to visit this establishment. Great food, terrific beer and wine selection, terrific service. You should not miss the pretzels and beer cheese sauce.
Great food and great beer. If the weather is nice I highly recommend sitting at the outside tables.
Service was excruciatingly slow. I had a weiss wurst and pretzel lunch. Both of the items were good by themselves but the wurst came in a bowl of lukewarm liquid with all the charm and flavor of dishwater, making it hard to eat without soaking the pretzel in the dishwater, or splash it around trying to cut the sausage. You would NOT want to drink the stuff.
Great selection of beers on tap, unfortunately none of drink during the day and since we were here for lunch we'll have to come back for a dinner sometime to try them. The food was very good, we each had something different (6 of us) and all enjoyed them. Portions were good sized, those that got the full size could have easily had only the smaller size since we took doggie bags home with us.
Wonderful restaurant with authentic German food and beer. Our daughter suggested this restaurant for Easter Sunday lunch. We were not disappointed. Food was great. We will be back. I will have to get an extra order of the potato pancakes next time!
This was so much fun! The food was delicious and great service. I will go back soon!
Great food / great service. Tough parking.
Loved that we found a beautiful hoffbrau. We went early, it was quiet. Beautiful German-style interior and patio. Wanted so much to like it. Food and service were OK/good. Compared to othe German restaurants such as Supenkuche (sp?) in SF, the food was just OK: Neither main dish nor salad were "wow, this is so delicious." They were prepared well and nicely (tender, hot, nicely breaded pork cutlet), but the recipes were missing something (spices such as paprika?), they were relatively flavorless. TI will say the mushrooms in the sauce were delicious, it's just the sauce itself, which is the defining element of the dish did not perform. he spaetzel, however, was excellent. I had the jaegerschnitzel, and like I mentioned, the sauce just didn't have much flavor, although it looked wonderful. Also, the do dont bake their pretzels to order, so they were tough How hard is it to bake one fresh like other hoffbraus?
Beer was very good (Beittberger Pilsner).
Service was very pleasant and appealing (man, woman waiters plus a busboy) but wassuper fast, such that meal was rushed and we ended up not even being there an entire hour on our Friday night special meal out, as all food placed down in front of us immediately. The hostess who took us to our table seemed so bored and unhappy when she seated us, and she didn't talk, just sorted went through the motions. And the music was off--it was not German or classical or something that fitted the restaurant -- it clashed, oldies pop music, gospel -- it distracted.
I think we saw owner at the bar as we left, whomever it was seemed very friendly and happy and enough personality to carry the place. Unfortunately, that spirit and passion was not carried through the dining room. Sadly, we won't return or recommend based on food missing flavor. I hope/trust other have excellent experience enough to keep this beautiful place going.
6 of us ate dinner together and had a perfectly delightful meal. The food was home style in the best of terms. There was nothing among the 6 entrees that we wouldn't order again. Our waiter was fantastic. Besides being able to answer all of our questions about the ingredients in all of the food items, his knowledge of the beer menu was fantastic. It is a German restaurant so the best alcoholic drink from the bar is beer. One of our party asked for a high end Napa Valley wine and it was the only time our waiter seemed a bit stymied. The beer menu is so extensive that it is hard to go wrong there. A great place for families and adults a like. It is one of the most comfortable and yummy places in Alameda.
