Overall the service and food was really good, despite a rough start. The staff displayed a positive attitude, which is not the case everywhere these days. Apparently you can't reserve the outside tables and we had to wait for about 25-30 minutes beyond the reservation I made for 7pm. The manager even offered a drink while we waited because there had been a mixup when they accidentally texted me my table was ready when it actually wasn't. Now that is service! Will return!
Prefer the Jaleo menu for interest and flavor.
We ate outside in the blocked off street on a beautiful night but hard to enjoy the “ambiance “
Service and food were excellent! It’s the food that will have me coming back soon
Not a cheap dinner when you get appetizer, eggs and dessert
Tomato on toasted bread was my favorite appetizer and the flan dessert was delicious too
If you enjoy eggs, many choices and they were prepared right
I love that the menu includes dishes I would eat at home in Spain (fricandó, a Catalan beef stew with mushrooms or grilled squid in its ink) but that you don’t easily find in restaurants
I love Jaleo and was happy to see José Andres kept many of the menu items. Service was excellent and food as good as ever (flan is such a forever favorite.) I was concerned that an early WashPo review derided the service. Things were fine! Also appreciate keeping inside as vaxxined only. Hope more restaurants do that as days get colder. Perfect place for a casual lunch.
The service and ambiance were good. The good was just ok.
We went to Spanish Diner to celebrate my niece's new job and the experience couldn't have been better. Special shout-out to our server, who was attentive, walked us through the menu clearly and patiently, and went the extra mile to make the evening special. While I miss the variety of selections from Jaleo, the food is both a bit of adventure and a lot of comfort. A lovely evening.
Another hit from Jose Andres. Everythig (Pollo guisado, Albondigas, Calamar en su tinta, Patatas bravas) was delicious, great ambiance and staff very friendly.
With the help of our wonderful waitress, we enjoyed a wonderful meal. The Cannelloni was amazing! Everything from good to atmosphere to service were great. The only reason I gave the atmosphere a 4 was because the music was too loud. Not enough to not allow us to have a conversation but too noticeable. We would definitely go to the Spanish Diner again to explore more amazing dishes.
Delicious! The gazpacho was first rate as was everything else!
During our visit to DC we decided to go outside the city and could not have made a better decision . The restaurant is spacious, casual with amazing Food.
I have been waiting to try Spanish Diner, and nearly everything was perfect. The croquetas will melt in your mouth, and the Pollo Con Arroz is so tender that the meat literally falls off the bone. We also ordered the Macarrones with chorizo, but the sausage was so salty that the whole dish was inedible (our server graciously removed it from our check). The wine list is impressive too. Will be back for another visit!
Nothing was what I had expected. The salad, the toasted bread or the Spanish omelet. I didn’t really like any of them. My husband got the Ham and cheese sand which which is very good. They offered bottle of wine at half price if bought a glass of it which we got. I wouldn’t go back
We stumbled upon the restaurant after the recommendation from a good friend and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere, drinks, food and service were all top notch. We will be back! You need to try it if you are in the area or just male a special trip there.
Eggs Were under seasoned
The huevos rotos is delicious and the canelones is divine. Try the callos too and the croquetas cocido. We were a group of 5 and ordered different things from the menu and it was all delicious and reasonably priced.
As always, José Andres' restaurants are great. The Spanish Diner is exactly what Bethesda needed. The menu was varied and all the dishes we ordered were delicious. I'll be back soon!
Everything was outstanding! Service was attentive. Everything we ate was excellent, but the Ensaladilla Russ and Pollo guisado were truly memorable.
Extremely pleasant—ate outside, food fabulous, service good and helpful. Only small complaint, the sangria rosada was quite watery from too much ice. But we all had a great time!
We loved Jaleo's and were anxious to try Jose Andres' new place, the Spanish Diner. Since the weather was beautiful and we read on their website that all staff were vaccinated and masked, we made reservations for a very late lunch. We opted to eat outside. The menu and food did not disappoint. We ordered a 1/2 pitcher of Red Sangria and ordered Tapas-style including white Spanish anchovies, Spanish Omelet (with potato chips) the Pan con Tomate, the 36-month cured ham, and an egg dish. For dessert we shared the rice pudding. It was all outstanding. Our wait staff was so helpful and while serving many tables, she checked with us often. With their vaccination and masking policy for all staff and inside seated patrons, we plan to visit often during the colder months.
Very good, but prefer Jaleo and Omoyal (not sure I got the name right)
Jaleo was in this spot for many years…it’s not tapas like Jaleo….so for us it wasn’t the same. But it was good just not the same …our waiter was wonderful ….always there to get us another drink….
Jose’s version of a Spanish diner. The wine list has been pared to bare bones as has the dinner menu. Disappointed that they no longer feature the squid in its own ink but understand the corporate need to stay afloat in these hard times.
food was very good. And the restaurant was very clean
I love to eat and drink. China Chilcano is my favorite restaurant and I’m happy to pay for that. The food here was overpriced and not good. The chorizo sandwich had so much grease, the fried cod had no flavor and the beef stew was okay. The rice on that dish was really good and the garlic was a delicious touch. Sangria was good...best part of the lunch.
Miss some of the tapas options available when it was Jaleo
The food was delicious. Giant servings at reasonable price.
Perhaps it was because we were there later on a weeknight or perhaps they weren’t trying to rush us, but we definitely felt ignored by our server. We sat more than half an hour with empty dessert plates in front of us waiting on a check.
We love the food, Jose Andres and everything he stands for.
We loved Jaleo and we love this new place! Some excellent service, delicioud new food, and fabulous cocktails!!!
I came here with my parents and boyfriend for a Sunday lunch and it was such a pleasant experience! To start off, we got the patatas bravas and the croquetas de cocido. Both were so delicious and very flavorful. The food overall was very good and the ambiance was great! The staff was very friendly as well. I would love to come back another time! It's so nice to see a Spaniard cuisine in Bethesda Row!
Despite being called a diner there is nothing ordinary about this one. Superb is every way. High quality ingredients combined with perfect preparation make it a gem. Recieved a free Birthday Flan too.
food was outstanding, well prepared and presented
The food was delicious and I can't wait to come back!
Authentic! Excellent quality ingredients!
Seamless seating and wonderfully qualified staff. Sandra the manager was exceptional. Spanish Diner is a great addition!
Dr. Roy Joseph
Food remains excellent. They appear to have ironed out earlier service yips so a seamless experience. Only downside were plexiglass dividers between tables which is the correct public health approach but is still a distraction.
Terrific food. Just as terrific service--thank you Norivette!! And the outdoor seating was super. Indoors looked good, too--vaccinations required, tables distanced, etc. Can't wait to go back to try more from their menu.
We were surprised by the menu and how different it is from Jaleo. We tried the bread with tomato and the anchovies for appetizers and they were delicious. The main courses of cod, both the fried and the version with oil lil sauce, were excellent. I am not typically a cod fan but this was delicious. The stuffed pasta with bechamel was rich but also super. Best of all was the flan. Enjoy!
It's expensive. The eggs were cold. The fries were good but not hot enough. The smoked salmon was good but did not appear to be smoked in-house. The macaroni with sausage was good.
We had brunch outside. Service and food were excellent. So many great dishes on the menu, hard to choose. We'll be back
