Service was excellent and staff was very accommodating. Drink suggestions were spot on. We traveled in from Connecticut to take our son out for dinner and were thrilled until the food came. I've eaten a fair amount of Bar-b-Que and have never had such fatty meats. The brisket was all fat and the ribs were half fat. Too bad because the place has great potential.
Went to this place for the beer but the food was a fantastic surprise. Loved the grits! The brisket was tender and full of flavour. All four of us really enjoyed our food. The place is small and crowded but worth it because of the food. The service was excellent! Loved it and would highly recommend it for any meat eater that loves barbecue.
Overall, it's a cool spot. They brew their own beer and have interesting signature cocktails. My son/husband had ribs mac/cheese, Bacon & Cheddar Grit Cake, baked beans. I the pulled pork, Garlic Roasted Broccoli & Cauliflower and Sweet Potato Tater-Tots. Corn bread came with all dishes and they didn't include any butter. Drinks all good; nice selection of signature cocktails. Service was kinda spotty but very nice staff. Expensive but you get a lot of food for the money.
Recommend: pulled pork, roasted veggies, tots, grit cake, baked beans
Do Not Recommend: ribs (fatty), mac/cheese (got a little nasty when cooled down)
We might go back, but 4505 has better quality ribs.
The food is tasty, solid cocktail selection, beer on tap including some quite nice house brew. It is a good place for casual catching up with friends. Although it is a BBQ place, there are nice veg options as well. The manager is especially nice and recognized me only after one previous visit. I will definitely come here when I'm back in SF.
The restaurant was busy for a Sunday night, but we did not have to wait to be seated. The host and our server were both kind and attentive. And the food was DEEEE-LICIOUS. I loved the baby back ribs and especially the bacon-cheddar grits cake. I'll be returning soon.
Went with my wife and daughters for a Beer Week event, and we were blown away by the quality of the meat. We've done the whole 4505/Smokin' Warehouse/Gorilla circuit and love them all, but Southpaw was memorable -- especially the brisket and the back ribs. I don't normally favor Carolina-style sauce but Southpaw's was just right. Attentive service on a busy hectic night, a friendly vibe, lively but not painfully noisy, and a great beer selection. We'll try the cocktails and desserts next time, but, hey, it was Beer Week.
We gave Southpaw a try after having been a few years ago. Overall I like the space and they have a phenomenal whiskey list and good beers. The ribs were great, their chicken was slightly above average and their brisket was not good. Their brisket was dry (and had the mix of fatty/lean) and tasted/resembled roast beef vs. brisket.
I realize good BBQ is hard to find in California, and while it's fine in a pinch, for the price it misses the mark.
Excellent, traditional, North Carolina BBQ - best pulled pork in SF! It's also surprisingly vegan friendly and the pulled jackfruit and pulled seitan are delicious. The biggest seller for me is a toss up between the HUGE whiskey selection and the service. They are both top-notch.
The barbecue here is outstanding, as are the fun side dishes, particularly the bacon/cheese grit cake and the tater tots made with sweet potatoes. I ordered the half chicken, which was delicious, but the clear winner is the brisket--tender, smoky, and yummy--which some others at our table ordered. Table is stocked with four different kinds of BBQ sauce, all of them very good.
Only complaint is the location. Not on the best block on Mission, but worth braving the sketchy neighborhood for the food. Highly recommend.
Drinks are great, and the deviled eggs are amazing. I've been here a few times and each time I hope that the BBQ will be amazing. It's just OK... so as much as I want to go back over and over, I imagine I'll find myself searching out other BBQ spots in the future before returning here.
Some of the best Carolina BBQ that I've ever had. In a word, legit. The ribs and brisket are not to be missed. If you can get the pork tacos, don't hesitate. Drinks are also superior. More whiskers available than there are days in the year. Great vibe, great service and a dedication to excellence. Not to be missed! At last, San Francisco has true BBQ!
Not impressed with the brisket, which is what the waitress recomnended. Seemed dry and not very flavorful. Replaced the brisket with the chicken, which was really good. Fantastic cheese grits and grilled broccoli/cauliflower. Cornbread is served cold and lacks taste.
Limited wine selection with less-than-decent wine glasses.
I've been trying to find a decent American BBQ place (Any style) in the Bay Area for some time now. This place is definitely at the top of the list, leaving all the other competitors far behind. Not just the meat, but the Carolina-style sauces. Great sides as well, but obviously the star is the meat. The food was wonderful and the servers were fun and polite. My only knock against the place is that it was extremely loud, hard to have a conversation. We were a group of five on a Saturday night (Glad we made a reservation).
Service was great. And drinks were good. Food was just ok. The brisket and pulled chicken very dry. We had high hopes.
The waitstaff was excellent in trying to get us another piece of brisket for my daughter but it arrived after the rest of us finished our meals.
Very loud not a great spot for families. But possibly for a small group event.
The food here is really amazing and the restaurant was packed so not the only ones who think so. Probably not very original to eat here when I now live in Texas but oh well. Not our first time here and we really like it. The ribs were amazing - I'll say it - better than I've had in TX. The brisket was awesome. It's very easy to over order here - note the portions are huge so don't get carried away with appies.
