The menu consists of a wide range of options, including several vegetarian meals. Popular dishes include Korean fried chicken, bulgogi burger, dumplings and buns, kimchi, and beef tartar. In addition to the delectable cuisine, Southgate offers an extensive drink menu that includes cocktails, wine, spirits and an extensive craft beer list.
I love korean food. I feel like the flavors lacked. I ordered the hot stone bowl and I wasn't tasting any of those typical korean flavors. That said, the ambiance and environment was pretty cool. If you're going to hang out with some friends and have a good time it's a good spot. If you're looking for amazing korean flavors, this is not that.
Fun scene. Delicious food and excellent service. The restaurant is managed extremely well and the staff goes out of its way to accommodate.
The manager was amazing. We used open table during restaurant week and there was an issue on the website. So they called us immediately and let us know. They also gave us credit for when we decided to come in which was this past weekend. Food was amazing service was amazing and the manager followed up with us to see how everything was. Amazing experiences and amazing restaurant!
Food was better about a year ago, something changed
A group of 6 of us went to Southgate for New Year's Eve dinner. I had been to Southgate several times before but mostly for happy hour or snacks. The whole experience was wonderful - the food was fantastic, the staff was accommodating, and we all had a really fun time. Will definitely be going to this neighborhood spot more frequently.
Excellent food ! Flavors jump off the plate with Korean spices that can be attention grabbing. The boa and Korean fried chicken are not to be missed, the short rib spicy noodle soup, will warm anyone from any temperature !
I will return again.
The food and service are amazing. The staff couldn't be any nicer or more accommodating. The place is a bit on the small (tight) side and there's no parking near there. However, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Definitely get the KFC appetizer. We also got the short rib buns and the pork belly lettuce wraps. All outstanding. For dinner our group got the bibimbap, the japchae and the bulgogi burger. Again, all were excellent. Our bill for 5 people with drinks (which we did a lot of) was very reasonable.
I went with 9 friends! It was great. We were only people in there for first hour for Sunday brunch. Hidden gem! My friends cannot stop talking about the hot sauce. I loved the burger. One of best I’ve ever had
Everything was amazing! From the service to the food. I even got a little sauce on my light colored dressed and the waiter gave me a tide to go pen to get out the stain. We will be going back!
Food and staff were great!! Def want to come back!
Food was tasty and the staff service was excellent
Great food, great service and very reasonably priced.
The food was great. Our server Evan was fantastic!
Great food, great ambiance, great service, and great manager!! We couldn’t be happier with our experience!! Our friends recently moved near the restaurant and they are already regulars!! We will definitely coming back too!! Hear the brunch is awesome, looking forward checking that out too!
Terrific menu, fairly priced, with comfortable, friendly ambiance.
Second time at restaurant. First time was far better. After waiting a fairly long time for our food in a basically unoccupied restaurant, the waiter (who had not been informed previously by the kitchen or management) told us that what two of us had ordered was no longer in stock at restaurant. Substitution for the local fish was made with a non-local fish which was either not so fresh or somewhat overcooked. Dessert cheesecake tasted like it had been sitting in a refrigerator uncovered for days - it was stale. Hot pot with tofu was good and fried chicken was good as was the beers. Maybe Sunday early dinner should be avoided here.
Absolutely phenomenal food! Staff was very attentive and helpful with suggestions.
This place never disappoints. I came with my girlfriends and we had a terrific time. The people here are wonderful, thoughtful, and welcoming. The food is always fantastic (especially the wings but also the tofu bibimbap and short rib buns and the burger).
My reservation were for 745. They said they tried to call to tell me they were not able to sit my table until 815. However I never received a phone call. I even showed the hostess my call log. She was not very apologetic at all. The reasoning was because it rained and all the outdoors seating needed to be placed inside. Not my problem at all. I won’t be returning
Needs to do much better job with reservations. We had a 7pm reservation but was unavailable until 8pm. Simply unacceptable.
The food was good though.
Food was mediocre but i assume
The food was not as good as it has been as it has been previous times. Still good! Great service. Great ambiance. Date was a fan.
First time at Southgate for brunch!
For appetizers for the table, we ordered the Kimchi Poutine (spicy fries, cheese curds, kimchi, pickled chili, smoked bacon vinaigrette) and the Kimchi Deviled Eggs (kimchi, yuzu salt). The latter were terrific: a little zesty, a little spicy, and smooth. I'd heard a lot about the Kimchi Poutine, so my expectations were high. I was underwhelmed--if the fries were crispier, they might've held their own against the Kimchi Poutine, but it all blended together into a tasty, but not textural mass.
The Short Rib Loco Moco (braised short rib, poached cage free eggs, fried shallots, white rice) was fine, but not memorable. I'd definitely recommend the Dolsot Bibimbap over the Short Rib Loco Moco for a more flavorful, textural experience.
A fellow diner had the Korean Fried Chicken (double fried chicken wings, sesame seeds, scallions) and noted that the dish holds up as consistently good fried chicken.
I sat at the bar. The service was great! The food was amazing.
I have loved Southgate since it first opened! Great food that maintains the Korean foundation with some added Southgate flair. They always add new twists to the menu and their cocktails are delicious too!
Just after I moved to Philly, I was looking for a nice place to take a co-worker that was in town for work. I was happy to find Southgate in my neighborhood. The staff was really great, food was delicious and I enjoyed the cocktails. The waiter continued to refill our water long after we finished/paid as we sat and caught up which was much appreciated. I definitely will come back again!
Overall good food but restaurant was not staffed well for dinner crowd. Waiter did the best he could to manage a large number of tables.
Always a pleasure! The food and the service are always great.
The restaurant was too cold for my taste (nothing like sitting down to eat and then realizing your too cold to even consider the menu), but the staff let us move to one of the outdoor, and from them on I had an awesome experience.
First time here and went at the last minute.....loved the intimate setting, the food and everything else. We weren't rushed and had a great meal and lovely evening.
It was an amazing dinner!
Very nice spicy food
delicious food! good, welcoming environment.
The only critique I have for SouthGate is its limited vegeterian options.
If you're in this neighborhood this is the place to go. Get the octopus confit! Reservations are a good idea on busy nights.
Great brunch spot, will be back to try the burger!
Didn’t feel it was a very good value. Seemed pricey for what you got not that price is an issue if I perceive value. Can’t get over that they serve Smokey Bacon as “Pork Belly”. Never been to a Korean restaurant that didn’t take their pork belly quality seriously. Server agreed w me and asked me to comment, so... maybe goo for drinks. Surprisingly Small, few tables. Tight quarters for the “larger” crowd but not particularly open for regular size either. Service was very good. Bartenders very helpful and pleasant. lol bed walking the neighborhood but wouldn’t go back here for dinner.
Excellent brunch! The omelette was wonderful and my kids love the green tea waffles.
