Loved Thomas! This is such a hidden gem in Phoenix and it’s one of my favorite spots!
It was our first time dining there, most of the food we ordered was good except the Osso buco was a little dry and was serve with no sauce. We are expecting more sauce like the traditional dish.
This was our third visit to Southern Rail. We'd enjoyed the fried chicken and wanted to try something different. Loved the dressing on the green salad. The was good but think we'll stick with the fried chicken. Lovely service.
Justin Beckett continues to surprise! Great creative environment and amazing cuisine! Perfect for the urban crowd!
Great experience thanks!
Southern Rail never disappoints. My table had fried green tomatoes and rice balls along with deviled eggs to start. We passed around the fried chicken, vegetable enchiladas, and meat loaf. My dinner guests loved the menu and will be back again.
The interior has a very relaxing, pleasant atmosphere. This was our first visit with a party of six. We started with deviled eggs, dirty rice balls, chicken & sausage gumbo and fried green tomatoes w/pimiento cheese. The fried green tomatoes & pimiento cheese were excellent; the gumbo could have used less smoked chicken and added lots more Andouille sausage but was good; deviled eggs were nothing to write home about; the dirty rice balls need some work, no seasoning and very bland. On to entrees.....2 people in our group wanted to order the Osso Buco but were told, while ordering, that it was not available. It would have been nice for the server to tell us that as we were seated. Hamburger was just a hamburger, nothing special. My husband's flat iron steak was excellent, perfectly seasoned and a perfect medium rare. I had the salmon dish and was very pleased with the plate presentation and the perfect medium rare on the cook. Would I go back? Yes, there were enough highlights to further explore the rest of the menu. I would suggest that the chef work on a few of the dishes, as the menu is fairly limited.
Phoenix is a town of great neighborhood restaurants. Southern ranks right up there among the best both for the quality of the food and the experience. It really has a unique menu. It is a great value for those who like to dine out.
The staff seemed a bit under informed as to what the menu items were all about. Our server at least was very timid as to what was inside our dishes. My wife has an aversion to peppers and one of the appetizers we ordered (the rice balls) had red peppers. The Gumbo was good though. For entres, my salad was good but my wife's pork dish came out with, you guessed it, RED PEPPERS. When the waiter served the dish, my wife thought she saw peppers but was assured they were not. Upon further inspection we found that they were. The manager came over when a replacement salad was served (after a replating of the pork dish was refused - replating???) and offered us a desert as an apology. We perused the offerings but what southern style establishment doesn't have pecan pie?. We choose not to get a desert and will not be returning to the Rail anytime soon. Very disappointed since we had heard very good reviews in the past, including an episode on Check Please.
We came to Southern Rail to celebrate our anniversary, and it was beyond amazing.
We started with the deviled egg, which was a perfect little bite to start the night with. Refreshing and tasty!
I had the blackened Flat Iron for my entree, medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. Our server was wonderful and even checked to be sure that I knew exactly what medium rare was and that I absolutely wanted a medium rare steak. I always appreciate having a server that pays attention to details like that.
Beau had a casserole with chicken added, and it was so delicious. I had to stop myself from eating all of his food!
For dessert we had a gf chocolate "cake" with peanut butter frosting. (I don't remember the name of it).
Our server was able to recommend a delicious red wine for us to enjoy with our meal based off of what we said we were in the mood for. They were really an exemplary server and I hope that they continue to put as much care into their work as they did while we dined.
This restaurant was s great find while visiting Phoenix recently. Service was excellent, decor was really nice. The only reason for not giving the restaurant 5 stars is that the po’boy had a lot of pickles on it which were a bit overwhelming. All other food items were very good.
We went here for dinner before a show. We gave ourselves 90 minuets for dinner and used it all. Parking is a problem here, we parked on a side street and had a short walk.
The restaurant was very busy, but there was no wait for our reservation. I highly recommend reservations if you are going on a weekend. It’s very noisy here when the dining room is full. The service was a little slow, but we had a charming and engaging waiter and they were very busy, so no big complaints.
We ordered the sampler appetizer and everything was delicious. Food was slow coming out of the kitchen, but it was worth the wait. We ordered wine with the appetizer, drained the bottle, and when we ordered a second were told we got the last one. Our waiter suggested another option and gave us fresh glasses. Not ideal, but with one bottle down our table was fine the waiter’s pick.
The dinner was very good, but again, food was slow coming out of the kitchen. If fried chicken is your thing, theirs is excellent. All in all, we had a pleasant evening. Everyone had good things to say about the food. If you don’t mind a search for parking and are not in a hurry, this place makes up for any inconvenience with quality of the food and friendly staff. We will go back.
Food over priced. Service was slow. 1 server for entire service area.
Really enjoyed my birthday. Good wine choices. Right next to the restaurant is a super cute boutique bookstore with wine bar connected! Great service and delicious food!
Food was great. We were a party of three - had salmon, pork osso buco and fried chicken. We had a server that was obviously very new and very slow and inattentive so that was an issue- but he was a sweet guy! They compensated by giving us a free Mac n cheese appetizer. I do have to say that the music sound level was overbearing- was a Sunday evening and the sound was mostly a very loud bass that you could almost feel- not pleasant at all.
As always, great food and great service. Southern Rail never disappoints.
Great food, great service. Thoroughly enjoyed dinner with family. Have already recommended!
Menu has a wide variety of unique items and happy hour prices are great.
Great Osso Buco. Wonderful service.
Oso Bucco and Fried Chicken were top notch. Loved every bit of my meal.
Some places just try to hard to be different. There was nothing delicious. We all had something different
Another fantastic meal! The service, food and wine were just great. We tried the fried green tomatoes, fried chicken dinner, and had the bread pudding for dessert. Each dish was prepared perfectly and service was timely and professional but relaxed. Our table by the windows allowed for a great view of the sunset as the evening progressed. Our special request was handled graciously, and we are looking forward to returning soon.
Pricey, but delicious. Service is adequate, lacking in charisma, but still efficient.
We had an amazing time, our waitress was amazing! The social hour menu gave us a great opportunity to try a variety of items at a moderate price. The sampler was the best item we tried, and the bacon jam was to die for, that jam was so flavorful and savory. The pimento cheese was very unique and tasty nothing like I’ve tried before. The okra batter could’ve had more seasoning however it was still very enjoyable. The beignet ROCKed but one is plenty for two people. We can’t wait to go back to try more, well worth the time to check it out.
Outstanding in every respect, prompt service, great vibe, delicious food. Had the Sampler on Social Hour, good starter for 3 people. Shared the best fried chicken I’ve had in, well, ever! Good selection of beers and ales, wines by the glass. Definitely coming back!
First time here and my boyfriend had the meatloaf which he loved. I had the pork osso bucco which was delicious and so tender
Anniversary. Overall, great experience and our waitress was amazing!
The pork osso buco was so cooked so well. Very tender and fell off the bone. But the description of the sides was off. It said it came with a sweet potato hash and Brussels sprouts. There were no Brussels sprouts. The side instead reminded me of a breakfast hash, since there were peppers and bacon in it. The meat was phenomenal but the side needed to be elevated.
Celebrated a birthday and ate there for the first time. Food was delicious. We each ordered something different and it was all great! Our server was attentive and handled our special requests with a smile. Can't wait to go back. Seeing the light rail pass by was awesome too!
Chicken was great but would have liked option for dark or white meat.
Fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, and bread pudding were all amazing!
bartender needs to get trained on how to make a variety of cocktail drinks besides those on the menu.
We went to celebrate National Fried Chicken Day and were NOT disappointed! Their version is crispy, juicy and sooo flavorful and the mashed potatoes, collards w/bacon and complementary glass of bubbly were great accompaniments. Cocktails were interesting and tasty and desserts were just stellar-coconut custard with gingerbread crumbles...the stuff of my dreams!
Our one and only complaint was the noise level; too many hard surfaces, I guess. We found ourselves shouting at each other just to be heard. That said, we loved our meal and service was perfect!
I love this restaurant. We should not have to wait 1 hour for our order to arrive
Service was very good as always. The Tomato and Roasted Pepper Soup were very good, but the Salmon was just OK. Not bad, but not great. Overall a good meal and we will be back.
We came for the Bird and Bubbles event and celebrated National Fried Chicken Day. It was great!
It was national fried chicken day and Southern Rail added a glass of champagne! Excellent chicken but 1 appetizer, 2 meals, water and 1 Moscow Mule + tip was $86.00. It’s pricey!
The fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese are to die for!
Good dining experience. The brioche buns with REAL apple butter (not apple-flavored butter) was fantastic. Also had the fried chicken. Chicken was plentiful (4 pcs) that I took home and had the next afternoon.
Menu was not overbearing and I could see myself ordering almost anything on the list.
I really want to like this place. But the food is just ok. I like everything else.
