An awesome night sharing it with Justin and his debut on Chopped!
Great ambiance and great food!
Great food, service was a little slow. Eating on the patio, the traffic is noisy
Had a couple appetizers and drinks. It was good.
Nice atmosphere-good fried chicken and mashed potatoes 😊
Great décor. Good service. Good food. Overall a nice place and location.
Good food, and lots of goodies for the little one to choose from. Just a few too many flies for my liking.
Brought out-of-towners to expose them to something other than Mexican or Italian food. All four dinners were tasty, well-seasoned, and unique. The deviled eggs are to die for ... So is the fried chicken. The service was exemplary, attentive but not smothering. Always difficult to decide what to order - sometimes you're in the mood for a yummy grilled cheese or fried green tomatoes or dumplings. I have never been disappointed in the food. Warning - the street noise is pretty loud if you dine on the patio, but it's still worth sitting outside. Random note - the bathrooms are cool.
We loved it! Food was good, Jazz
Music was perfect, priced well
We will go back, and take others
Service was friendly and attentive, and the food was quite good! All 5 of us enjoyed our meals.
We had our family Easter Brunch here and the food was spectacular! I had the sweet potato hash and the ingredients were so crisp and savory! I also had a side of collard greens which were also very good. I prefer a bit more salt on them, but other than that, I loved them. My family members loved their meals. One had the fried green tomato benedict, another had the chorizo biscuit and another had the french toast. Very nice meal and I want to back again soon for brunch. My only complaint was the AC was running really cold, but I am sure that was in anticipation of a crowded restaurant and 90 degree forecast that afternoon.
Food selection was not what we expected for Easter brunch. Food tasted below par.
Went before the Rattlers game and the place was empty. Really fun menu. We all had just what we wanted.
Brioche rolls with apple butter and the chicken dumplings were amazing! Great cocktails too. Brought our kids and they love the food and being next to the book store!
Had read about this restaurant and decided to go while visiting Phoenix. Great space, fun server and the food was terrific. Gourmet southern food. Definitely worth going and scored a 1/2 price bottle of wine since it was Monday night. Great experience all around.
It's was great!
They stopped the Monday night BBQ special which is disappointing. Ordered the salmon and a glass of bourbon. Salmon was good, but they were skimpy on the sides / accompaniments (especially for the price). Left hungry. It took -forever- to get my friend’s glass of wine, even though the restaurant wasn’t busy. Service was mediocre. Atmosphere is inviting, but probably won’t be returning.
Loved the Jazz and Jambalaya night. Hamburgers are the greatest in town
Fried green tomatoes and deviled eggs were delicious. Fried chicken was great. Some meal portions were small - meatloaf and salmon. Sides were yummy.
First time to this restaurant. Unique menu. Our party ordered a Po’ Boy, Gumbo, Deviled Eggs, the Camelback Salad and the Antipasto Salad. All were very good - large servings with the exception of the gumbo. Service was decent although we had to get the attention of the server for refills of our Cokes. Enjoyed the book store and garden store in the same building. Overall a good experience. Would probably go back.
Everything was great
I'm originally from Georgia, so I had a craving for Southern food and this place did not disappoint. We ordered six items from the happy hour menu so that we could taste as much as possible -- every single dish was incredible!
We had a wonderful brunch at Southern Rail! Our coffee and food were incredible. We especially loved the gumbo, shrimp and grits, sweet potato hash, and beignets. Our server and the rest of the staff were friendly and attentive. They took the beignets off of our bill as a birthday gift to me, which was super sweet and generous. It was a beautiful overcast day and the restaurant looked gorgeous in the light. I also loved the music playing - old-school R&B, Motown, and soul. Can't wait to come back!
Always a favorite for tasty options for dinner. Good wine & cocktail menu. Best ever chicken, oso buco, jambalaya & salmon dishes.
Good food, excellent service and nice atmosphere. Good for lunch and diner
We have frequented Southern Rail several times. We love the vibe, overall noisy atmosphere, the bookstore next door and the food. The desserts are ALWAYS amazing! The meatloaf and fried chicken are favs of my husband, my mom had the salmon and enjoyed it as well. I unfortunately ordered the BLT Salad with shrimp this last time. It was not the kind of salad I ever ever expected at Southern Rail. The shrimp were limp, watery and laid on top - maybe 4 or 5, I didn't care because the salad looked so unappetizing, BIG chunks of iceberg including the core, I think they wanted the bacon and tomatos to take center stage and they did so in a very overwhelming way. Overall maybe a salad is just not to be ordered. I did mention to our server that it wasn't good and she offered to comp me a dessert which I took her up on a delicious coconut pudding with gingersnaps. Lesson learned. Service was just ok, it didn't seem as attentive as in the past, with the exception of the busperson who wanted to clear everything off of our table prior to eating dinner including water glasses, etc.
We have been here before and it’s such a great patio! My problem this time was NOT the service - our waiter was AWESOME - give him a raise! The food - it was as if you were running out of veggies, and the pork meal was horrible - it tasted like a coriander plant (I think coriander, I couldn’t place the spice but my husband thinks coriander) wow - such a strong spice!!!!!!! My husband got about 3 green beans and 2 Brussels sprouts - I SWEAR I am not exaggerating! The food was just so so this time! Last time I had ribs and although they didn’t give a lot of ribs - they were delicious! And I don’t need a TON of food - but I’m still hungry when I leave - my husband too! AND it’s expensive!!!!!! They have HORRIBLE salad dressings and I always think ‘go ahead and have your dressings that you make and are really proud of - but leave a couple of dressings for those who hate it - I mean not even a regular ranch?’ They gave my daughter a red velvet cake which was different but super tasty and the service couldn’t have been better - I just wish the chef didn’t cook so arrogantly - the table next to us sent their pork back - my husband politely ate his but had to give me his steak and 3 green beans haha. You aren’t as good as Dominick’s - you should not charge so much without giving us a little - some bread, a salad with decent dressing...something! What a great place - but dropping $120 and 2 of the meals were kids meals (see St Francis) and we are still hungry - something is wrong!( Which sucks cuz this place is so cool!)
Loved the veggie casserole. The only suggestion would be a bit more creamy , It was very good but a bit dry. We would definitely get it again however. It was fun to go down memory lane with that good Southern cooking!Fried green tomatoes, yum. Thanks for being there. it was worth the drive.
Southern Rail never disappoints. Even with a new eating regimen, our server helped to find foods I could eat while bringing the “good stuff” to my fellow diners! Hated having to skip desserts but dinner was so filling and flavorful!
Great service. Great food. Large portion. Awesome time with the work group.
My friends and I (a party of 5) had lunch here on a Saturday around 1:00p.m. The ambiance was great; I could actually hear what was being said. Service was excellent. The staff were attentive and kept our glasses filled. Our food came out fast and was the right temperature. I had the deviled eggs, a bowl of gumbo, and a side of collard greens. The gumbo and collard greens were delicious. The deviled eggs were ok; I think the egg mixture needed something in it to kick it up a notch. The other people in my party had the grilled cheese and soup , a salad, and the pork cuban. The presentation was good and they all loved their food. I'm a Louisiana native so I would have liked to try the beignets but we were dressed so we didn't want powder sugar all over our clothes. Next time!
I intend to go back when it's the full menu for dinner. Very happy we tried this place.
P.S. It's next to a book store so you can eat then browse for books...the perfect combo.
Food was just ok... eggs on Benedict were not poached... almost hard boiled. Mimosa was in a tiny little glass. Service was adequate. I had eaten here previously and really enjoyed the food... don’t think I will return.
Southern Rail’s concept is great and the restaurant itself is pretty cool. I had the fried chicken. Except for a drumstick (that was undercooked) the pieces were unrecognizable. For their signature dish, disappointing. Others ordered the burger, not a huge hit, but my friend from Atlanta lived the collards. A person who had the gumbo loved it. The dirty rice balls as a starter and the beignets for dessert were delicious.
I would still go back, but it’s a little mixed.
First visit here wanted to check out the Jazz and Jambalaya.. was not disappointed food was delicious and the service was excellent! Great Arizona wine selection and awesome prices.. I will be back and am making sure to spread the word on this place
Overall a great spot nestled into one of the more interesting little groups of businesses in the area. Definitely an older crowd and more laid back environment but the food is awesome as are the drinks. Give it a shot sometime.
This place is always great! We have been several times - this visit we had a sampling of the happy hour menu (the grilled cheese, gumbo, dirty rice balls, deviled eggs). The food is so great we come back even though the service can be clunky. They mean well, but some of the staff are just going through the motions. Our server this go was so soft spoken we couldn’t even hear him! Time before, the server forgot to order several plates for our table. All in all, nice peopl, great place, delicious food!
Great food and drinks.
I enjoy dining at Southern Rail. The staff has always been prompt and courteous.
Amazing food! Great service! Do yourself a flavor and check this place out! Southern Soul Food with Flair!!!
