Delicious seafood stew. Looking forward to trying other items off the menu. Wait staff let us linger well after closing, while my dinner guest and I had a heavy conversation. Kudos to you. Will definitely be back, and highly recommend.
Poor customer service!!! Firstly, our server "talked up" a half off a bottle of AZ wine deal they had..My daughter & I decided to go for it, & get a bottle of AZ sauvignon blanc (sauv blanc being our absolute fav). Server took our wine order, then returned after a bit, reporting there was none, & then stood there waiting for us to make an alternate decision. I asked if they would be willing to sub a comparable CA bottle of sauv blanc for the same price. Answer was no. We ended up paying somewhat more for a different bottle of AZ white wine that we didn't even like as much as what we originally requested. Oh, & I asked if they could price match the alternative AZ wine with the one we wanted...Once again, answer was a flat NO.
Sadly, that wasn't the end of the lack of customer service. So, my daughter & I (who clearly have similar tastes), both decided the seasonal veg enchiladas sounded great...ordered them, only to be told there was only ONE order of enchiladas available! I told my vegetarian daughter she could have them, as she is strictly vegetarian. So then I was put on the spot once again, to come up with a backup plan, while the server stood there waiting. I was getting really flustered & disappointed that they were out of everything I ordered!!! I decided on the grilled cheese & tomato soup combo, not as exciting as enchiladas sounded, but what could possibly go wrong with such a simple meal I reasoned... Well, when my food arrived, I think the entire table was stunned at the portion size. Honestly, the soup was the tiniest bowl of soup I have ever seen! My husband clearly looked very disgusted! It looked like it was a kid's meal! The grilled cheese was cut into 4 little triangles to try to try to stretch it into looking like more. It was PATHETIC joke for $14.00!
Plus, the guys had to ask for every single soda refill...and many times there was a wait.
No apologies, no comp or discount offered...nothing, except presenting the bill.
The food we ordered was average and overpriced for what we got. Kitchen was very slow, 45 minutes from order to service, server told us the fryer was backed up but the restaurant did not seem over-busy and you would think there would be lots of fryer capacity at a restaurant serving Southern food. And the fried chicken was overdone at that. Shrimp and grits was nothing special for $22.
What a bummer! This was our second time here, and the food is always great! However, I suffer from a severe dairy allergy, and last time they were accommodating and there wasn't an issue. However, this time they must've accidentally slipped up as I had a severe reaction after eating the food... We told the waiter a few times, and he confirmed with the kitchen everything would be totally safe and dairy free... It was not... I wish they took the word "allergy" more seriously, as they could've killed someone... Again, total bummer as the food is great and so is the ambiance... Not worth risking death for, though.
Having lived in New Orleans for 9 years and a wife born and raised there, I can say this food is outstanding! The flavor is genuine and captures the essence of New Orleans. Best southern fried chicken in Phoenix! Gifts are to die for. Red beans and rice, Gumbo YaYa, beignets, bread pudding, awesome food!
Good but not fabulous. No where near Beckett’s Table
The fried chicken is exceptional! It’s crunchy, juicy and full of flavor. I was raised on southern food and the cuisine really hit the mark. I the collard greens as well as the fried green tomatoes were a favorite. The shrimp and grits were a disappointment because of the abundance of tomatoe sauce overwhelmed the delicate creamy grits and shrimp. It’s a comfortable place, with good food that incorporates a lot of local ingredients. We will definitely be back.
This is a great spot with wonderful food and stupendous service
Went to the jazz event wonderful experience had great food. Attentive sever and the temperature on the patio was perfect. Music was good just the right volume so you could talk and still enjoy the music We will come back
good southern cooking! Nice atmosphere and good service
Food was creative and delicious. Service excellent. A little on the expensive side. Would return for sure.
I had the muffalata. Very good Also an excellent salad. Staff was also friendly.
The noise level was high even when the band wasn't playing.
We will return as we really liked the food
Always interesting menu and excellent experience! Consistent star in the PHX list of choices.
Awesome bread pudding. A tad too expensive for my budget, so I cannot dine there as often as I would like.
Great wait person. Delicious food. We ate outside on a beautiful evening, but there was considerable street noise.
Went for their Sunday Jazz & Jambalaya night. Make sure to make your reservation and request to be sat on the patio if you want to enjoy the Jazz. We were sat in a great location to listen to the music immediately. Food was great too!
Southern Rail is such an awesome place! They have great live jazz music and jambalaya! Their menu offers some unique dishes! Great place!
I really enjoyed the Jazz band. It really added to the feel of the place. Unfortunately there are not to many places that have live Jazz music in the valley. It was my first time there but certainly not my last. The service was excellent as well.
Great food and good wine selection. I love the mashed potatos and deviled eggs!
Took too long to get our entries. Server did not come back to check on us or explain why it was taking so long. We had a show to get to and had to cut our dinner short so that we could get to the show on time.
I've been wanting to try Southern Rail for a while now. Decided to go with my mom & sister for my birthday and I was pretty disappointed. While the ambiance/patio was great, the food was only okay, especially for the price charged. I feel no need to return at this point.
Everything was delicious and the service was excellent. They messed up my dish a little but they made it right in such a way that I can't even complain. Ambiance was great and I will definitely go back when I have someone with me who is a bit more of an adventurous eater.
Great restaurant. Took customers there for dinner and everyone had a great time and the food was fabulous.
Best fried chicken !! The service & atmosphere is top notch. Luv the open dining room at this time of year. Cost is in line with the quality & the selections are always in season. Don’t skip on dessert. Best beignes outside New Orleans ❤️
The food was good and very large portions it is a great from find. Will go back with friends
This was my first experience at Southern Rail, the biscuits are SOOOO good! The menu is creative and unique, we all loved our choices. And the venue is really cool. They have a private room for events too!
The food was very flavorful; great portions. Drinks were superb, and service was great! It was upscale soul food; reminds me if the Red Rooster, in Harlem, NY. We will be back.
Overall the family enjoyed the restaurant. I came for the live jazz music and the wife came for the beignets. We sat outside for the band but it became a little noisy when cars would pass by since were right by the main road.
Other than that the prices were good as well as the food. If they do another musical event I would look to return.
The bread pudding was to die for. Good place to go for comfort food.
all good, red pepper/tom soup, shrimp and grits delish! wil be back
I wanted to love Southern Rail but was underwhelmed. We came for restaurant week and the food was just average. Not bad, but not interesting. Our server was great if maybe a little too attentive in trying to clear plates several times before we were done eating. We live in Scottsdale and would not put SR in our rotation of regular spots. Not worth the drive sadly.
We went specifically for restaurant week for the andouille sausage shrimp & chicken jambalaya. We’d had it a number of years previously. It was disappointing. Mostly rice. The service was slow due to not enough servers I believe. I feel as tho a restaurant we’ve loved had changed dramatically.
Good food and service. This was our second visit. Really enjoyed the food both times. Brought a friend and he also enjoyed his meal. Would highly recommend.
We've returned to Southern Rail several times, usually taking friends there to enjoy the food and great service. The menu is sure to please any palate and dietary needs. I enjoyed the veggie casserole (vegan and gluten free). The fried okra and roasted cauliflower are great starters. Our friends had chicken & biscuits and the meatloaf. Both were very pleased with their food and plates were cleaned! Highly recommend the variety of cocktails and scotch menu. We will return.
Great food and very accommodating
We tried Southern Rail for Arizona Restaurant Week. We enjoyed the appetizers (reb pepper soup, shrimp and avacado salad, and dirty rice balls). A were wonderful and we would order them again. All three entees were excellent (duck confit, meatloaf, and jambalaya). The desserts were tasty but we thought not on the same level as the apps and entree (red velvet cake and flower less chocolate tart). We will definitely keep them in mind for future dinners.
Loved Thomas! This is such a hidden gem in Phoenix and it’s one of my favorite spots!
It was our first time dining there, most of the food we ordered was good except the Osso buco was a little dry and was serve with no sauce. We are expecting more sauce like the traditional dish.
This was our third visit to Southern Rail. We'd enjoyed the fried chicken and wanted to try something different. Loved the dressing on the green salad. The was good but think we'll stick with the fried chicken. Lovely service.
Justin Beckett continues to surprise! Great creative environment and amazing cuisine! Perfect for the urban crowd!
