Our American beverage program is truly celebrated with a strong focus on Arizona wines, craft beers, and boutique spirits. We boast an extensive bourbon list and award winning wine program.
Southern Rail boasts a stylish dining room, expansive outdoor patios, and an indoor/outdoor bar. The space is upscale casual, warm and rustic; consisting of distressed concrete floors, reclaimed woods, whimsical textiles, antique chandeliers and re-purposed leather booths. Our two patios are complete with misters, ceiling fans, heaters, TV, a fireplace, a 12 seat drink-rail, all inclusive to accommodate another 80 g
Server took a while to take our order. They didn’t have two dishes on their menu (for a Friday night). Server visited our table infrequently and no one asked if our food was ok, where my daughter had an issue with her dish. Good food but not worth poor service and high prices.
We waited 30 minutes for our first drink. After that, once we actually got a server...he was great and the food was wonderful.
I selected this restaurant because it was close to the university. I was celebrating my doctorate degree and had a few family and friends join me. It was great service and a beautiful restaurant. The food was ok. Very different southern food. The fried green tomatoes and okra were delicious. The chicken and dumplings were basically chicken and a biscuit crumbled with gravy. Everyone enjoyed their food though. Dessert was great!
Love this place. Food is spot on every time we've been here.
Very good food, fair portions, great price. Manager rectified a slight issue and comped us a replacement
We’ll be back😊
Nice Sunday night on the patio with live jazz. Good food. Good ambience. Service slightly off, but nothing serious. We’ll be back to try some local wines 1/2 price on Sunday & Monday.
Beautiful outdoor patio. Food was authentic and amazing. Service was fast and attentive, but not overbearing. Will definitely be dining here again.
I said that value was a 4 out of 5 because although the food is really good, I feel that it was a bit overpriced. Like for example, it was 7 dollars for deviled eggs that is basically an egg and a half - like that is a bit much. But the food overall really was fantastic. Fried okra was just coated enough to be crisp on the outside but the desired level of softness (not at all mushy). The fried chicken, which I heard was ranked nationally as one of the best fried chickens in the US, was phenomenal - flaky, crispy fried batter on the outside, juicy chicken on the inside. The ambiance was very nice with the lights kind of dim for intimacy but light enough to have vibrant chatter all around. The service was a bit slow to start and the guy getting our waters said he would let our server know the appetizer we wanted to put in, but that didn't happen. The waitress was super nice but sometimes when I made eye contact and looked to get her attention, she would smile and walk right by. Outside of that, she was friendly, nice and helpful. We also liked that they boxed our stuff with a date so we know when to throw out. Overall, a really good experience and would suggest to anyone for a date night and a stop over to the book store next door.
We had a wonderful time at the Southern Rail. It is one of our favorite restaurants. However, on this occasion it seemed to take a particularly long time for our food to arrive. This will not deter us from coming back. We had an enjoyable time and our meal was excellent, as usual.
Great service, wonderful ambiance and amazing food. Enjoyed the pork dish they had for AZ Restaurant Week. Should be a regular dish!
Lively restaurant with great service and good food. We went for restaurant week and only ordered from that menu. The beef entree had an additional cost however since beverages were included that offset the additional cost. Excellent beet salad and tasty gumbo. Both entrees were very nice- meatloaf and steak. Desert was cake with peaches and completed our evening.
TL;DR? excellent food, nice atmosphere, below-average service.
Look, it was Arizona Restaurant Week. Southern Rail even had a special AZ Restaurant Week menu. I figured that they'd go all out to show off their work. That makes the disconnect between food quality and service quality all the more jarring.
We had the Dirty Rice Balls and the Gumbo for appetizers. Both were really, really good. I'd definitely order those again, (though I think they are not on the normal menu.) For entrees, we went with the Flat Iron Steak and the Pork Roast. The steak was perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. I was very pleased. But the Pork Roast was Next Level. It was astonishing. Chef Beckett paired cornbread with tomatoes and peaches, and the pork was "cut with a fork" tender. Absolutely spectacular. PUT THIS ON THE PERMANENT MENU!
For drinks, I had the Sazerac. I'd come back for that, too. I've had Sazeracs all over the state, and this was the best one yet. Perfect balance of flavors - bourbon, absinthe, simple syrup and lemon. The bourbon they chose was really nice.
My partner had the wine. She was OK with the white and thought the red was undrinkable. I have no more useful information though. I don't drink wine, so I have no opinion to share.
We were so stuffed from dinner that I couldn't do justice to a review of the desserts: the flourless chocolate cake and something else I don't remember. I do remember that the texture on the chocolate cake was lovely. If I was more hungry, I'd have really enjoyed that.
The after dinner coffee was hot and tasty.
But the service...
The restaurant was nowhere close to full. We had reservations and it still took them several minutes to seat us. Then we appeared to have been forgotten. Then our servers changed. Then they didn't provide enough steak knives. Then they were out of the special desserts that were on the AZ Restaurant Week menu.
I liked the atmosphere. Loved the food. And hated the service. Hopefully, that'll get fixed.
Terrific place for great food. Gluten-free and vegetarian options available. We had the slow-cooked pork and it was DELICIOUS! Recommend dining outside if weather permits - they have a great patio!
It was great ambiance and the service was good but I was very disappointed with the food. The fried chicken was cooked well but under seasoned and the meatloaf was DRY and crumbley. My bourbon drink, which should be a strong sipping drink, was watery from too much ice. The side were so-so.
Went for Restaurant week. Some items on menu were not the same as what was on the AZ restaurant week website. The waiter, Thomas, was great. The time to get food to the table seemed slow, for it not to be crowded. The plates looked beautiful. Certain elements seemed under seasoned. (Fried okra). The dessert (vanilla bourbon cake... didn't really get that bourbon notes more cinnamon like cold peach cobbler feel to it) was ok, I would have preferred warm but was served cold. The steak was good but I didnt really taste the mustard or bourbon in the butter. This was my 2nd try at this place. I think the g.r.i.t.s in me had higher expectations... for the price point I've had better dining experiences. Give it a try. If you aren't from the GA/SC/NC area you will probably love it more than I did. I prefer their brunch...
nk you so much for reaching out and sharing your feedback. We are so sorry to hear about your disappointing experience. We strive to execute an atmosphere of southern hospitality that puts a premium on great, locally sourced food; it’s disappointing to hear that we failed to provide that for you . We’d love to have the opportunity to further discuss your visit and extend an opportunity to have you back as our guest, with a little extra southern flair to make up for your previous experience.
Reserved a table for restaurant week with some friends. Their list of in-house libations was large I hope we get back there soon!
Great service with a moderate wait time due to the food being prepared fresh not pre cooked.
Dinner was delicious. Great time with friends. Would recommend Southern Rail for a contemporary take a on Southern food!
So many great sounding appetizers and mains made it difficult to choose, which is a good problem. It means you need to go back. On my first visit I had to try the signature fried chicken and I wasn't disappointed. We also ordered the smoked pork and peaches which was sprouting good. The portions are really large and easily shareable. I was there on a Friday night and the crowd was a bit loud.
They ran out of their salmon dish so substituted shrimp.... it was not good and they over charged us. We will not be back.
Relatively frequent diner at Southern Rail. As such, obviously the food is commendable. Had the Southern Chicken this time which was good, second to another restaurant. My favorites are Gumbo YaYa and Grits and Shrimp but, I've dined on almost everything and keep returning. Service was excellent this time and always. Only negative......parking is sometimes a problem.
Great food with lots of reinterpreted southern fare. I would highly recommend for people who love great food!..also a very nice selection of bourbons, craft beer and wine!
Food was okay. Chicken and dumplings was not a traditional meal. Pork did not have as much flavor as expected. Need to get back to you Southern roots.
Wonderful waitress! We were having dinner for our 35th Wedding Anniversary and the staff was so sweet! We will definitely go back!
Delicious! I had a great salad so succulent and delicious! The restaurant is lovely, open, sunny, and so much light!
Great food drinks and service
Beautiful modern space with quality finishes and thoughtful touches with character (such as old chandeliers and painting wood plank ceiling) . Aside fro the beauty of the space, the restaurant experience was delightful from beginning to end. We were greeted with a warm smile from the genuine hostess. The server was very friendly but also not overly present or pushy. We ordered appetizers of the dirty rice balls, which were so flavorful! The cocktails were nicely crafted and our server gave guidance as we perused different options. The main courses were Phenomenal!... Naturally we had to order the fried chicken, which is their signature dish, and has won awards. IT Did NOT disappoint, and the portion was enough for two people to share! The other entree ordered was the pork Ossobuco that was equally perfect, with fall off the bone tenderness, and just the right amount of fat to provide moisture and flavor!. SO good! The accompaniments were collard greens, mashed potatoes and roasted cauliflower and sweet potato which all played great supporting roles on the dishes!
Can't wait to return and enjoy this restaurant again! The only problem is that I'll want to have the exact same meal every time, I'm afraid and I won't try anything new!
Had an awesome experience with great food. I recommend the fried chicken and the bread pudding.
Of course, the fried chicken was heavenly. No surprise there. Loved the Gumbo ya ya. The grilled andouille was crisped to perfection, the sauce and chicken wonderful.
The osso bucco confit was a big hit with our group (two orders). Not just the amazing meat, but the bed of vegetables was super and not just an afterthought.
Just overall, wonderful presentation, preparation and environment.
Try the Red Sangia. It may be the best in Phoenix.
The food and service is always great! I wish they had a few more menu choices; but what they do have is done very well.
I cannot wait to try the Jazz Brunch series beginning September 29th.
They are known for their chicken dinner, was sold out. We were disappointed. Had the pork shank, was good, was the same.
We’ve been here 4 times now. The first time was great! Each time after, the food and service has gone down hill. This last time, the restaurant was empty and service was extremely slow. The food was not great. My soup bowl was hotter than the soup itself. The Mac & cheese appetizer tasted strange and to add just 4 small shrimp to a bowl of gumbo was $8. While our waiter took off the soup and Mac & cheese from our bill it was still an overall disappointing experience. Will not be back.
I was really disappointed by the food. The brunch menu was very limited and they were out of items we wanted to order like the fried green tomatoes. The chicken and biscuit dumplings tasted like sausage soup, not what I’m used to for southern cuisine. Would not recommend
It was perfect for my boyfriend's birthday party of 21 people! Great service, amazing food...would absolutely come here again.
This restaurant continues to have amazing service. If you haven’t come here yet or are thinking about coming here book the reservation
Great food service will be back for sure food was hot service was excellent John was are server he was great
I had perhaps the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The batter was Chrissy without being oily. The breast was juicy and tender. It was perfectly brined and well prepared. There was a hint of rosemary and
What a great evening at Southern Rail. The service and food were excellent! The staff was outstanding and made sure we were taken care of. Definitely will be going back!
Went for Sunday Brunch. While the food was good, the plates are overpriced for the portions.
