The best brunch we've had. The service was friendly and prompt. The bloody Mary was delicious too!!
Fantastic okra and the cornbread is delicious. I liked the runner beans and apparently the spicy chicken is amazing (a.t. My friend). Sat outside so relatively quiet. Inside was very very cold from a/c (on a cool summer evening). So not sure I’d want to sit inside. TBD.
Delicious! My fiance had the chicken breakfast sandwich and he said it was the best breakfast sandwich he has ever eaten. Definitely will go back!
Great service and excellent drinks. We visited during Brunch and enjoyed a chicken little breakfast sandwich and a mushroom omelette. We started with the pimento cheese popovers, definitely the star of the day!
The food was phenomenal, the menu was short and sweet, the drinks were really good - even the off menu requests. The staff was super attentive, and was great about clearing the table between courses without interrupting or taking food we weren't done with. And the cracked pepper honey is as good as they say it is.
Very very good for double date!!
Ribs and pulled pork were unspectacular.
Good food if you’re looking for that southern vibe. They do a good job with the southern flair. You have to try the Pinochle drink if you’re a whiskey person. It’s unique and worth a try. Pretty good value on the food all things considered. We’ll be back!
Had a 2:45pm reservation but was not informed the restaurant was closing at 3pm.
The servers were kind and prompt. Obviously, the time issue was not their fault.
The atmosphere is so open and covered in antiques. Love the ceiling of upside-down lamps.
I'd been here before for dinner and had a good experience, albeit cold mac and cheese. I thought I would give it another shot and booked it for Mother's Day. The brunch menu was incredibly limited and not one dish shined, besides the fried chicken. The scrambled eggs with lox was too salty. The Chicken Little sandwich is served with a Kraft single. I like this but you might want to warn people who expect a higher quality cheese for the price.
They have an amazing space that would be POPPIN' if the food was improved. Especially considering you have a "kitchen appreciation tax" added to your bill at the end.
Great fried chicken and bread putting. Service was average. Very difficult to find parking around there. May be we will do a take out next time.
The brunch was okay - the fried chicken was good but they said they were running out so we felt rushed to order it first. They brought that out before we even placed the rest of our order. The waffle was not good and flavorless. The stuffed corn cakes were worth ordering and the shrimp and grits were fine. Overall, for the price, I wouldn't go back again.
An amazing experience. My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to have brunch and this place didn't dissapoint us. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable. The drinks were on point and the food (we had about 5 dishes) were mesmerizing . We'll be back for sure.
I always love going to Southern Proper, it's a local gem.
It was a busy night for them and couldn’t seat us for a while after our reservation time and made sure to show us they cared - even bought us a round!
We've been a few times to Southern Proper, and this time the food was better than ever. Especially liked the burnt ends poutine dish, the pimento cheese dish, and the BBQ picnic platter. Artichoke dish disappointed. Bring back the Brussels sprouts - they were out of this world. Biscuits can't be beat.
Always great as usual!! They made a spot for us even though we didn’t have a reservation and didn’t rush us out when there was another table after us. Love the food too! Best fried chicken in Boston! And I’m from Atlanta!
This is a fabulous restaurant! Food is always great and service really friendly. We love it here!
Absolutely phenomenal food and service!
A really fun spot. The atmosphere is quirky and service is good. The menu is small and a little overpriced and kind of basic. The fried chicken us yummy but the breading is thick.
Fantastic service. Our server was attentive and friendly, but not overbearing. Food was an A-, a bit greasy if anything. Cocktail list was unique. Lighting was a bit high, but other than that, a comfortable ambiance.
I would return!
Love this place! The food and cocktails are amazing. They have unique twists on southern classics.
Excellent experience. Great food. The bartenders are exceptional.
Great night out at Southern Proper. Would not eat this much every night but this was a great change of pace. Good beer and drink menu, though I think they should add a gin drink to the specialty cocktail offerings. We enjoyed the hush poppies and cauliflower apps and the traditional fried chicken was awesome. Also tried the whole fish which was a little tough to navigate but fun. Wine menu is a little light but hey it’s the South ... drink beer or bourbon! Overall good service and bright airy atmosphere. We enjoyed our night!
Super cute restaurant. Recommend the brunch and am excited to try dinner.
Second time back here and it was even better than I remembered. Amazing food and the staff are so friendly. A place I will keep returning to.
Excellent food and service. Love the decor.
Excellent design of the space, bright, countless thoughtful details. Our waitress was informative and was a pleasure to be around. Food was unique and exceptional, can’t wait to go back.
As the manager said, the food comes out "as it's ready," even though this is not a tapas restaurant. This creates a situation where you either have to be rude and eat while other people don't have food or eat cold food after waiting. Our situation was only made worse when one of the food runners took a meal for our table to another one. We were not informed of this circumstance for about 15 minutes. When we were finally told why the rest of out food was taking so long, we asked if we could have the cold food redone along with the missing food. The old food was taken and then simply brought back out with the fresh food. So it was even colder and just disgusting. I guess they thought we wouldn't notice. Shockingly poor service with unimpressive food and an impractical back-of-house system. Unfortunately, I do not recommend.
Southern Proper was fabulous. I wanted someplace fun for a birthday brunch and this place delivered. We ordered fried chicken (half spicy half regular) for the table, and it was incredible. Delicately fried, great flavor, not too greasy. We also had buttermilk biscuits, waffles, steak and eggs and mimosas. Everything was delicious and the service was great. Will definitely be back!
The restaurant vibe is good to have drinks and appetizers. The food was not impressive and needed more flavor. We had the jerk chicken wings for appetizer and they should change the name. I would not describe them as jerk wings. It had a little spice but all the flavor was on the skin. No jerk taste to me and the meat was not seasoned well. I had the fish dish and the fish was good (enjoyed the Porgy), but the rice and sauce deflated the meal. Overall, I was not pleased with my meal and my husband had shrimp and grits and was unimpressed as well. Perhaps we picked the wrong items on the menu. I do not know if I am gluten for punishment, but I will try their brunch on Sunday, this will be the tell, tell sign if I will ever come back to Southern Proper.
Just a great experience - friendly casual service with outstanding food. The Pimento was honestly the highlight for me, although the Fried Chicken Biscuit and Smoked Meat Plate were also outstanding. The Asparagus Slaw was also great. Good drinks, too!
Cassandra service, energy, suggestions, enthusiasm about the menu was Outstanding. Can’t wait to visit again.
Ps. Pls tell the chef the cook was amazing thank you
Brunch Review: While the brunch menu is limited, the items available are really very good. The fried chicken, available in classic and hot, is very juicy and the coating is crunchy and crisp without being difficult to get through. We ordered the hot version and while there definitely spices that added good flavor, I wouldn’t call it spicy. The pepper seed vinegar available on each table, goes really well with it. This condiment, along with pickles, add some nice depth, tartness, and acidity to the chicken.
The biscuits and gravy weren’t exactly what I expected, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The smoked pork and gravy and very flavorful without being overly rich, or heavy as a white, sausage gravy can be. The biscuits themselves are flaky and surprisingly light. A nice addition are the green onions which cut through the gravy and add some nice texture.
I don’t have much experience with pimento cheese, but the flavor and texture of the pimento cheese goes very nicely with the popovers. Unsurprisingly, the pimento cheese tastes great on the biscuits too. I was somewhat skeptical of a $5 hash brown that was described as “kinda like a McDonald’s hash brown” but I’m glad I got it. It is not like a McDonald’s hash brown. At all. The outside is very crisp, while the inside remains moist. The texture of the potato is very fine and very tender, which is a nice contrast to the outside.
All in all, a really great meal with excellent service. Our server went out of her way to inform us that she had read the note in our reservation regarding food allergies and asked us if she could answer any of our questions before we ordered. The space itself is very nice as well; roomier than expected, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. Definitely worth a visit.
The corn cakes are AMAZING! My husband also loved the steak and eggs.
Had such a lovely meal. Delicious food. I cannot wait to bring more friends and family here. Great spot and GREAT music :)
Great food, great, quick service.
Great food served family-style, a bit expensive but worth the price to treat yourself to some good southern cooking. The ambiance is relaxed and service was super quick although there was only one server for the entire dining room so when it got busier the service was a bit slower.
Fried Chicken was yummy and the waiter was wonderful!
We went on a monday night, so it was not really packed in there, but there were a decent amount of folks sitting at the tables. Service was very attentive, and she was quick to help us out if we had questions on drinks or food. Food was crazy good. As a table we ordered about half of the sides and to share items, and everything we ordered was fantastic. Get the whole fried fish, its a sight to see, and that tomato sauce almost brought a tear of joy to my eye. If you are reading this, just call that cab or start walking towards Southern Proper, sit down and have yourself a good time.
