Our second time here, this time for New Year’s Eve. The place is closing, which is a shame. The atmosphere is great and the food is very good. Drinks were fine, nothing special. Value for food reasonable for the area, and it’s a great space for a hip restaurant. Service was fine, they’re not very attentive. I hope that the owners are able to rebuild some thing and that a new restaurant will move in here soon.
Best restaurant by far!! Devastated that it’s closing.
The non-spicy fried chicken sandwich was perfectly spiced, moist in the middle, and a large portion served with a side of lightly dressed greens. Mac n' cheese was a generous portion as well, considering how rich, gooey, and savory it is. If you come here around lunchtime on a weekday, you'll have your pick of seats, smooth service, and peace & quiet to go with your meal.
The food was okay, I thought the appetizers were actually the best part of the meal. The service was way below expectations. The restaurant was practically empty, but we had to wait a long time to order drinks and food.
The fried chicken does not disappoint! We left very happy11
Arrived late for our reservation, told to wait despite resturant being half empty. Went to the bar to grab a drink while waiting on our table. Bartender ignored us for five minutes despite doing things like drying glasses and talking to co-worker. It was as though we were invisible. We spoke to the hostess regarding the terrible bar service and then we left.
It was first time, the host staff and wait staff were very personable and accommodating.
The fried chicken was tasty once you got past the skin, waffle a bit dry.
The grits & shrimp were tasty. Beverages were great.
Food was outstanding. It really is unfair to the staff to have basically one waitress covering the floor. We were constantly in need of water and wanted to order drinks but literally could not find anyone.
Great biscuits and fried chicken. Fun atmosphere, lively but not too loud for conversation.
Biscuits were great. Rest of food fairly uninspiring. Hush puppies were undercooked in the middle. If you like sweet and savory pancakes, Alden and Harlow does a better job in taste profile and consistency.
Horrible service (long wait even with reservation, multiple mistakes, not friendly ) overpriced food for small portions and mediocre quality.
Restaurant was very cool, atmosphere was fun. Very disorganized staff, hostess was running around doing literally everything (deserves a raise if it’s like this every day!)
Food was tasty, but my girlfriend finished her ENTIRE meal before I received mine. Took 3/4 of her meal for the server to come back and check/realize I didn’t have any food. Server was fine other than that.
Overall I probably won’t come back and would prefer one of the other options available nearby.
Loved the atmosphere. Fun place to actually be able to talk with friends. Food was very good. Waitperson wasn't great but didn't impact the evening.
Food was really good, service was just ok (not sure if waitstaff was rushed or not this day. Not really personable, but good enough).
Amazing service, very good food created with care and attention, as always!
We appreciate southern propers truly gluten free menu, which is possible because their cooking real southern food, in the original way the recipes were created. The lighting is a bit too dark sometimes which makes it hard to see the menu/food, but regardless, Southern Proper is a delightful dining experience and a welcomed menu (especially so north on the east coast!)
Best biscuits in Boston
Beautiful building, enjoyed the experience. Our server, Eric, was outstanding. Food was a tad on the salty side or I would have given five stars all around. But I'd certainly recommend and eat there again.
Gluten free chicken and choices were great. Atmosphere was nice.
Great fried chicken sandwich, and good fries. Overall a charming and inviting restaurant. Non-pretentious, and delicious.
Poor Value for the Dollar. Four pieces of chicken & 1 beer with 23% gratuity, & MA tax totaled $36. Too much for 4 pieces of chicken.
Food was pretty bad. I thought it was just my opinion but asked my dinner date later that evening; he had similar sediments.
Best fried chicken in Boston. Great ambiance, good service. Good for large groups or for a date, seat at the bar, etc.
Had a lovely time. One of my favorite brunch places!
Great service, friendly staff and amazing food! I had been craving a pulled pork sandwich and southern proper did not disappoint! The drinks were really good as well.
The pedicab drivers of Boston have, for years, kept a secret recommendation list of bars and restaurants in the city. Updated FREQUENTLY, we are among the most asked for dining recommendations for both out-of-towners and locals alike. So when we go out to eat, we're watching for key elements; does the place feel welcoming; is the cuisine "accessible" or esoteric; is the vibe charming or bland; etc.
While we were slightly skeptical, in the end we loved that it was somehow a magic hybrid of Northern attitude with southern hospitality. It's Southern done Northern – which is what you'd WANT from a Bostonian restaurant specializing in Southern cooking.
We loved the "shotgun" service style - it brought a casual nature to have waitstaff popping in with dishes, and gave the meal a lively sense of fun. Our waitress was a real charmer and gave us great tips for the menu. Likewise, having the head chef accessible if we wanted – right in an open cook line – added a friendly reassurance to the quality.
The chicken was, indeed, the star of the show. The brussel sprouts were amazing. We had vegetarians among us, and a HUGE upside of this restaurant is that they did not skimp on the veggie sides. You got a LOT of veggies with each order. I can understand when restaurants hang back on portion size of meats and carbs, but veggies ought be served generously, and here they were. The corn bread was tasty, but felt heavy; the fried concept was working for it, but just BARELY. (Might have just been an off batch, though.)
And so, Southern Proper has made it onto the top secret yet highly coveted "Trike List" of recommendations regularly relied upon by pedicab passengers in Boston. We're excited to encourage folks to head down behind the Cathedral for a hearty Southern meal with a Northern panache. Well done, y'all.
Lukewarm food. Overdone fried chicken. Dry ribs. Mac and cheese was like soup. Collard greens, brussel sprouts, and popover appetizer were only part of the meal worth eating.
Food was wonderful, especially the hot fried chicken sandwich! Atmosphere and drinks are great as well
We had a reservation but ended up eating at the bar because of the AMAZING one dollar bar bites. This is such a terrific deal -- many of the same items that are on the full menu but bite size servings that only cost $1. The chicken sandwich was $5 but worth every bite. Delicious and not small. The rest of the bar bites were also good, but somewhat oversalted. But still a great meal. Two people with drinks only $30 (including the two chicken sandwiches). Can't beat that.
Lunch. Not busy at all.
I had been meaning to check out this place for a while now and it was overall pretty good. They're supposed to be known for their chicken and waffles so that's what I got. I wasn't totally in love with the waffle part. It was as if they had had the waffle pre-made and just put it on a plate. The chicken was good though. I'll go back for the chicken for sure.
Everything we ordered I would definitely recommend to order. the popovers in pimento cheese were very nice the hushpuppies were very well seasoned and tasty. The fried Chicken was excellent and the hot chicken was definitely very hot. I had the octopus perloo which I had never had before and it was very good came out sizzling in a little cast iron skillet very very tasty nice spice and kick to the seasonings octopus was very tender. No complaints at all about the food it was all very very good.
I really tried to love it. Really. I'm from the DC area and my mother was from eh South so the concept appealed to me, and the fact that we live steps away. I had been right after it opened and my impression nearly one year plus after was about the same. The service was incredibly slow. We were there on a Saturday night at 5:45 and the space wasn't full at all. Our waitress finally got to our table a little after 6. Anyone who knows me locally knows that I like to at least have a cocktail before ordering. We had deviled eggs, shishitos, biscuits, a chicken sandwich, a four piece order of chicken, brussels, cornbread and the beets. The beets and maybe the chicken were about the best things that were delivered. Even my drink was disappointing as I find the fancy coupe glasses extremely small, though it could be psychological. I'm not sure where the disconnect is on the food. The chicken was fine, albeit room temperature, but I'm not sure how they missed their mark on the authenticity of the food. Southern cuisine isn't that difficult. Sorry. I said I wouldn't go back again, but I definitely won't now. It's too bad because the space is beautiful. I just don't think the neighborhood needs it. We have too many amazing options for legit dining. :( I know plenty of people who love it so I hope they can stick it out! We all want them to do well after such a careful and purposeful interior renovation but I think the menu needs a bit of an overhaul.
Great drinks, fun service, and fast food!
Loved the food. A little noisy but ok.
Too much salt in each single dish
Great service and awesome food. We had a baby and a toddler and they were very accommodating!
A lovely place. Excellent interpretations of southern food. Cocktails were a bit too strong for my liking. I would like to see the dessert menu published online. Overall, a fun small plates Southern place that I would gladly go back to. Brunch looks great!
Always a great meal, perfect for a family or close friends
A true gem. Should be mote crowded. Nothing like it in town.
