Southern Charred
Opened in October 2017, Southern Charred is a Barbecue Restaurant and Bar located in the heart of Downtown Raleigh. Featuring smoked meat platters, barbecue sandwiches, southern cocktails, craft beer, axe throwing and more! Come grab a late-night bite Fridays - Saturdays, we serve a late night menu until 2 AM!
While we smoke and season our meat offerings, we let our guests choose which regional BBQ sauce to top. Our homemade sauces include eastern North Carolina's vinegar-based sauce, western North Carolina's tomato-based sauce, Tennessee's molasses-based sauce, and South Carolina's mustard-based sauce.
Got there and there was a sign on the door that they were closed for maintenance. I even got a confirmation text message the day before.
Food was bad and it was EXTREMELY loud with the axe throwing/people screaming and cheering. The brisket sandwich was inedible. It was obviously the end pieces of a slab of brisket. It was tough and super chewy/fatty. Both me and my friend couldn’t bite into it and barely could cut it with a knife. Even the waiter could barely cut into it. The pulled pork was so-so, flavor was good, however it was lukewarm-cool when it arrived. The sides were ok (macaroni and cheese and baked beans), but they weren’t very warm either. The only decent part of the experience was the good manager who took the brisket off the tab and apologized for the terrible meat that was served. Never going back...There are plenty of other good bbq restaurants in the area.
It's a good place to go for comfort / southern / bar food. They have Axe Throwing available. A bit of the College-crowd ... but that's what you'd expect on Glenwood
I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. Our server was very attentive to our needs. The only thing I would say wasn’t to my satisfaction was the collard greens... not sure what happened this time but we’ve had them on a previous visit and enjoyed them on that occasion.
Save your money. The food isn’t that good and the service is non existent. We had a reservation for both food and axe throwing for a friends birthday and they drove her to tears. They sat other people at our high top, gave away one of the lanes she’d reserved, and were very rude about the whole thing. I’d give zero stars if it was an option.
Disappointing. Brisket was very dry, they were out of slaw & the smothered tots and nachos were bad. Fried okra, hush puppies & BBQ sandwich was good. Too many flies. And the sauces stay on the table, so I’m sure flies had been all over them. Would not go back.
We loved it! Perfect for a family lunch, service and food were excellent!
This was possibly the worst meal I’ve had. We tried four different meat selections and each was terrible. Had a reservation but they didn’t honor it. Would not ever recommend this place to anyone.
There were too many flies. The seats were very uncomfortable. A worker was banging a lot while she was taking apart the ax wall. The food was okay but nothing stood out enough to make me return.
enjoyed the food and service. The Axe Throwing was awesome.
We had a large party of 36 people. The restaurant manager wasn’t helpful at all in getting out party into the dining area. We called weeks ahead and worked something out with the owner, which was amenable to us all. A week before my wife’s 40th bday party the manager wouldn’t honor the promises that the owner made. She would only let us bring that many people if we went under corporate buffet prices. Most menu items are in the 12-15$ range but she wanted to charge us $25 a person for a two item and two side buffet (which no one wanted). Instead if being denied we went on OpenTable and circumvented the manager by making 6 different reservations around the same time. This was stressful and totally unnecessary. The restaurant could have easily given us those 6 tables and made everyone happy without the added inconvenience of having to go AROUND the restaurant manager. We already had booked 20 people to throw axes at their place, at a cost of $35 a person. The restaurant should have been helpful in making this an easy night, but instead I felt like we had to work hard to arrange everything.
Nonetheless, the food was amazing and everyone enjoyed the varied menu. Prices were reasonable and serving sizes were huge. Mac and cheese side dish was a favorite if everyone and you get complementary hush puppies with every meal. Service was also good. At no time did the restaurant manager come speak with us, apologize, or even acknowledge our presence. However, the axe manager was gracious and apologetic and went out of his way to make sure we were taken care of and happy. His customer service and friendliness went a long way to smoothing over the difficulties with the restaurant manager.
The axe throwing was fun and the guy who worked with us was really nice. It was expensive for how many times our large group actually got to throw axes. We originally had three lanes but, again, due to a scheduling error on their part, were only given two lanes. Food was great. Axes fun.
My first time there. I did enjoy the food, but found in every bite, more fat than Hardy meat which I was expecting. But want to still enjoy my meal. The drinks were spot on ! The atmosphere was Great! But it was so un-godly HOT inside the whole time we were there it made for a unfortunate experience☹️90’ or warmer. We threw axes, definitely enjoyed that experience! Matt was wonderful! I would recommend this place to my friends and family! And return on a cooler evening.
The food was pretty good! The wings are fried not smoked as we expected- but other than that the food was good. But there were so so so so so many flies!!!!! Also, we made a reservation- however when we got to the restaurant it was all seat yourself... So that wasnt what we expected. I dont think we will go back, just too many flies for it to be a decent experience.
Loved this restaurant! I took my family axe throwing before hand. Great food, fun atmosphere
Noisy as hell. Loud nasty music, some guy banging away at target repair next to us. Ye gads. We left.
This restaurant is really fun. We reserved a high-top table which placed us near the axe throwing so of course we had to do that too. Good drinks, great food, really fun.
The food itself was ok, nothing special. The service was amazing, however. They also had an axe throwing event in the corner which was interesting, but not what I expected. It ended up being loud and hot inside. It would be a nice place if you were going out on the town, but not a great place for an enjoyable dinner.
Good food, decent service. Waited a while before we were served. Brisket, wings and ribs were phenomenal. Pork was decent. Try the Alabama wing sauce and the Carolina mustard with the brisket. Overall, very good experience. We will be back!
Great place to enjoy downtown with a group. Staff was wonderful...very attentive. The food, however, was...meh! Way too salty for my taste. This was our first visit so maybe the chef was having an "off" night. It wasn't so awful and the service was so good that we might try it one more time to see if the food improves. I said yes, I'd recommend but it is with the caveat that it was only well...again, meh at best.
Southern Charred was great! This was my 2nd time visiting them. Very attentive wait staff and host! Loved every minute of it. The food was delicious and you definitely get a good portion for your money's worth!
Service was the worst we have ever had dining in any Raleigh area restaurant. That said, we were hoping that the ~two hour wait for our food would be worth it but unfortunately that was not the case. Food was served cold and everything from the brisket to the pulled pork was not very tasty and rubbery in consistency. We wanted to love this place but overall we were very disappointed...Hoping they can make some changes and step things up a bit.
Would be good to make clear it is a bar with a loud, energetic environment. That is not what I was expecting when I arrived.
Service was terrible. We were the only table there and still waited over an hour for our food. Food was mediocre at best.
For food yes I would recommend this place but due to lack of service and waiting over an hour for food I will not
I was worried about dining here because of past reviews, but we were pleasantly surprised! Definitely give Southern Charred a try! The food was delicious! Service was wonderful at lunch time on Easter Sunday. Great atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
We had a great time with a larger party enjoying a birthday party!
Best Southern food and Pulled Pork in town. Portion size was equivalent to the price and was served hot and short wait time for food! Amazing!
Food Average for bar
Service slow and not enough staff
Service was AWFUL! We were one of 3 tables of people in the restaurant and there was only one waitress. I ordered brisket and I had a plate full of meat pieces that were hard as rock like it had been left over from last night and nuked. When I mentioned this to the the server she bought me a plate of freshly cooked fork tender brisket. Not sure where the meat crumbs came from. I am thinking that if you want to drink this is your place. But then again the frozen drink I ordered they were out of..... well try it at your own risk. Food was actually good but the service made it now worth it at all
Dinner was great, the food is excellent, portions were good, prices were very good for the quality of the food! Enjoyed the axe throwing and shuffle board! Love the look of the place, all tha glass and the foe garage doors put you rite on the street! If I could make any changes it would be to fire whom ever chose those chairs!!! They have to be the most uncomfortable chair/stool I've ever sat in!!! As a stool with no back it would be fine, but with a seat diameter of about 10"x10" and a back couldnt tell if I was sitting or standing!!! Let's just say that this place keeps you on your toes, and the edge of your seat!!! Lol!!! Great Place!!! You should go!!!!
Amazing ribs
The restaurant was slightly under staffed but they hustled to take care of us
First the positives, the smoked chicken was so good, all of the sauces provided are also very good. Our server was super nice. The ambiance is fun, axe throwing, and other games which looked fun.
The ribs were tough, so much so that I couldn't cut between them and my husband could cut, but could hardly eat them because they were so tough.
Wanted this place to really blow our socks off, but it fell flat.
If not for the axe throwing, there is absolutely nothing remarkable about this place.
Despite making a reservation for 2 for a high top we were placed at a table for eight, completely removing any romantic ambiance.
Well.. There was no hostess so we waited at the door for about 10 mins. went to the bar and there was two bartenders.. People were leaving right to left after ordering food and not eating.. There was not enough workers.. But the food was good.. I would recommend going on a non busy day. We didn’t get to throw an axe like we were hoping.. I don’t know that making a reservation was separate with the axe throwing. They need to make that clear because we called at 1:00pm and no one answered the phone!!!
Hopefully they can get better staff soon! Would love to go back again!!!
Service was incredibly slow, due to no fault of the ONE server that was working the entire restaurant. Food was mediocre at best.
Best barbecue and atmosphere around!
