Southern Bistro at Chastain Park
- Limited number of seated diners
- Extra space between tables
- Sick staff prohibited in the workplace
This was my first time visiting Southern Bistro at Chastain Park. It was excellent. The menu has great options for brunch. The Jumbo Biscuit is exactly that! and delicious! you will not be disappointed. The grits were also a big hit as well.
We were going to a concert at Chastain with friends from out of town and wanted to grab dinner beforehand. In researching, Southern Bistro had great reviews and was close to the venue. When we pulled in, I realized I had been there before. That experience wasn't very good, but it was a long time ago and I always like to give a place a second chance.
We were early for our reservation but were sat immediately. The restaurant had quite a few customers but wasn't crowded.
We ordered drinks and three appetizers - pimento cheese, brussels sprouts, and deviled eggs. All three were really, really good.
For dinner we had two of the SMF fried chicken with green beans and mac and cheese, one SMF sandwich with fries, and one Prime Rib special with mashed potatoes. (I was surprised the Prime Rib didn't come with a vegetable, but whatever.) Overall nothing was more than okay. Except for the mac and cheese, which was inedible. Everyone at the table tried it, just in case one of us had a bad palate, but all agreed it was horrible. It tasted burnt and even smelled burnt. While we didn't say anything during dinner, I did mention it to the waiter in the hopes it wouldn't be served to anyone else that night and/or give the kitchen a chance to make it right. However the expression I received from the waiter was that nothing would be said and he seemed to doubt me. (Who lies about mac and cheese? Who doesn't eat ALL their mac and cheese?!?!)
So second chance given, no third to occur. Cute place, nice atmosphere, mediocre, at best, food.
Everything was wonderful. Can’t wait to go back!!
Always one of our favorites places to eat! Service yesterday was exceptional to say the least!
Absolutely delicious!! Trout was best I’ve had! We all cleaned our plates! Shawn our server was great! Can’t wait to go back
Mediocre and restaurant wasn’t very clean it seemed. Nice server but slow and just won’t go back. I have had worse but disappointing. Sorry but it’s pretty accurate.
Great food - great service. Enjoyed being able to sit out on the patio
Our outside dining table top was rusty. It felt unsanitary placing utensils on that surface, and it was unattractive. The tops should be covered like the inside tables.
Good atmosphere, good food, great prices.. nice variety on menu
This was my first time dining at Southern bistro. It is fantastic! I had the salmon BLT with Dell cucumber salad. The patio is lovely and very private. The server was wonderful.
great food with a friendly environment
First time having brunch. Usually go go dinner. Lots of brunch options from eggs to avocado toast. And lunch choices including fried chicken and meat loaf. I had grits on the side, possibly the best in Atlanta. Attentive and friendly service.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE! I URGE YOU TO MAKE RESERVATIONS RIGHT NOW! IF you have to wait, please be patient, it is DEFINITELY worth the wait! This is one sweet little gem tucked away in a cute little corner in North Atlanta. We were pleasantly greeted by such a warm and inviting couple. It truly feels as if the owners are inviting you into their home for a dining experience unlike any other. EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING was simply SPECTACULAR! The service was WONDERFUL! Our waiter greeted us PROMPTLY, was attentive, made recommendations, discussed specials and answered all of our questions! He was extremely polite and knowledgeable with GREAT attitude and personality! It was our first time dining here and had high expectations based on the reviews and let me tell ya, they did NOT disappoint! We started with the fried green tomatoes! They were absolutely delicious! Fried to a PERFECT golden brown with JUST the right amount of seasoning. You can appreciate the flavor of the tomato coupled with the mild flavor of the goat cheese and the right balance of sweetness with the pepper jelly. I had the chicken and waffles with a side of bacon, cheese grits, and fruit and my wife had the Creole Skillet with scrambled eggs. I’ll start with the skillet. DELICIOUS would be an understatement!! We’re from New Orleans and we were ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY by how good this dish was. If you can imagine a seafood boil/etouffee breakfast skillet..it’s kinda like that, you have to try it!! It’s not TOO spicy but it definitely has a Cajun kick that’ll wake up those tastebuds for breakfast! I’m running out of room…GET THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLES, the greens were delivered by an angel from heaven, I saw it! The bacon served here is smoky with JUST the right amount of salt, not too much! FRESH FRUIT! Grits were PHENOMENAL! (SERIOUSLY) PLEASE do your mouth and SOUL a favor and get the pound cake. I wish I could order an entire cake! The cake is A palate-blowing EXPERIENCE! Enjoy!
It was our first time coming to Southern Bistro and it was my husband’s birthday. The food was excellent and the service superb! Definitely will come back soon!
Good food - Great service!!!
Five stars all around! Seriously some of the best food I’ve had in a while. Bravo!
Server was gracious and polite. Food you can count on. Great patio.
Disappointed! Our first time there. After reading the reviews, we expected it all to be delicious. My two friends ordered what was the special of the day, country fried steak. Turns out, last minute in ordering, we find out it was a sandwich, but they said oh well, and ordered it anyway. It was fixed like a hamburger, but surprisingly topped with bbq sauce. Neither liked it so much, but ate part of it anyway. And....you'd think we'd be told it had bbq sauce on it....and was this really country fried steak as we know it? A big disappointment. I had the trout, with skillet potatoes and spinach (they were out of green beans and collards, at 12:30 lunch time). Mine was delicious! Almost felt guilty enjoying mine so much, while they were struggling around, trying to eat theirs, as it was actually way too bulky to be eaten politely a sandwich. Dessert? Yes, we tell had their infamous warm caramel pound cake, which lived it to its praise....delicious! Doubt we'll be back.
Great neighborhood place with goo quality food at a reasonable price.
Had a very good time however our waiter wasn’t very attentive
Always yummy. We love chef Justin!
So glad you are close to us
Shrimp and grits were AMAZING! So was the caramel pound cake and fudge pie. Will definitely be back
Food was delicious! Will definitely be back.
Dinner before Concert at Chastain Park.
Great food and service by baby Sean (our regular waiter)!
A first-time visit for dinner with a friend - kind of a let's-meet-in-the-middle - so, this popped up on a search and looked good. I'd say better than good. The food was very good and I'd definitely give it another visit. The shrimp and grits was delish. The chicken very good. The deviled eggs a bit runny, but tasty. And the dessert was good. Give it a try if you're in the area. A bit of a funky decor - lots of sunflowers stuff - and was surprised by the tv screens (since it's not really a bar-food kinda place). But, money well spent.
Always a great menu. Food is very good. 2nd time eating @ Southern Bistro, & my only complaint is both times part of our order was missing. The 1st time was only the bread, so wasn't a big deal. The 2nd time, the server forgot my salad. Not sure where the disconnect was, but the problem was solved. Will definitely be returning. Nice spot.
Had a very pleasant lunch on the terrace. Trout and coffee were excellent. Service was also excellent.
Our party of three had three different seafood dishes. We went on Thursday expecting it to be crab cake night, but that special had changed. Still, there was a good selection of fish dishes. The rainbow trout with green beans and roasted potatoes was very good, and my two companions also enjoyed the sea scallops and the salmon. Service was excellent, with frequent checks by our server. Entree prices seem a bit higher than I recall from our last visit and for a neighborhood bistro, but this may be due to all restaurants having to deal with inflation on both food and labor. I would certainly recommend it for its wide selection of good food and great service.
Great food and service. Place is frequented by what appears to be a lot of regulars. Cozy, neighborhood feel.
Food caught us off guard with how good it was. Do yourself a favor and get the caramel pound cake. Actually best pound cake I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was decent. Nothing crazy, but nice. We saw a lot of elderly folk in pictures online and about 90% of the crowd was 65+. But it didn’t feel like it and we forgot pretty quickly. All in all, it’s a great place to have great food while staying a bit more low-key for the evening. Will absolutely be going back and that’s not the pound cake talking.
The food was subpar and the service was not great. The server seemed annoyed we were there. The eggs had a funky taste to them. The biscuits were huge but dry and cold. I do not recommend going for brunch.
This is a great Sunday brunch place. Fantastic outdoor deck.
This was a dinner of my mom (91) and my brother. All good.
The food was amazing! We will definitely come back- the Southern BLT with fried green tomato and pimento cheese was one of the best sandwiches ever!! And the brioche French toast perfectly topped with real maple syrup- not the fake stuff- and the thick cut bacon was a perfect addition! Atmosphere was super relaxing and would be a place I would love to come back and hang out. Word or critique is the service was average- everyone was very friendly but not attentive. There is a line of being too attentive and not allowing guests to enjoy their meal and time together but this was not the case. the restaurant was not busy during our visit but there were a few times where no one was to be found. Possibly could have been due to the fact that we were on the patio or staff shortage so we won’t let it keep us from coming back!
Had a delicious brunch- fried green tomatoes were perfection
Amazing as always
Southern Bistro is a reliable purveyor of delicious food, good service and pleasant ambience in a lovely neighborhood with ample parking. What more could one ask?
Southern Bistro is the best neighborhood spot, with great food, and wonderful price point and warm, friendly staff!!
In my conscious effort to always try something new, I stumbled upon Southern Bistro while scrolling on Open Table. I was impressed by the images displayed and decided to book a table.
Upon arriving, you are intrigued by the outside appearance itself. The restaurant has an all-glass front and sits in the corner of the shopping center. It's almost like its own little comfort world. Walking in,
The hostess stand is directly to the right of the door, you can't miss it
The hostess was present and greeted me with a smile
The restaurant is very clean
You are met with an aroma of good seasonings and southern comfort
Booking via Open Table made the experience even as my table was ready and I was seated immediately. The best part is, traffic had me a few minutes late and the 10 minute grace period came in handy!
Upon being seated, my waiter came over within moments and he was an absolute pleasure. He walked up with a smile, greeted everyone, presented the specials for the day, and was ready for our drink order. I am talking top-tier service. #Priceless
The menu has a variation of items that are perfect for a person like me who didn't have a specific taste for anything particular. I decided on the "SPRINGER MT. FRIED CHICKEN" dish with Whipped Potato and Green Beans.
Let's Talk Food!!!
The Fried Chicken was perfectly golden fried. I am talking deep-fried to perfection with the golden color on the outside and moist meat on the inside. The chicken is seasoned with caution, meaning, you can taste the flavoring but they aren't too powerful and allow for the natural taste of the meat to be present. The Chicken Gravy provided the added flavor to the meat as you can tell that the flavor focus was within the gravy itself to form the ideal pairing with the chicken. I'm not a "Chicken Gravy" person usually, but with this dish, it made sense and works perfectly.
The Green Beans were firm just how I like them with all of the Green Bean flavor present. The Whipped Potato was an ab
