South of Beale Ratings and Reviews
Disappointing that the Restaurant was out of their “famous” duck fried rice on NYE. Very small dining area with cramped seating and uncomfortable chairs. We were also seated at the table closest to the door and were blasted by frigidly cold air every time someone walked in the door.
Apparently they had an oven fire in the kitchen earlier in the day and several items were unavailable. It would have been nice if they’d called, explained and given the customer the option to go elsewhere, etc. We were there with out-of-town guests for a special evening. Everything else was great!
We’ve gone at least once a year for the past 5 years and it has just gone downhill. The once famous popcorn tastes just like light Carmel corn, no spice like before; the portion sizes have gone down; can’t substitute sides; the jack n coke bread pudding base tasted like pillsbury dough cinnamon roll and the bourbon gelato had little kick and was half Melted when it got to us and the tables were caked on sticky :/ it was my birthday dinner and has been just about the past years due to downtown Dining week but I am thinking of other options now.
Downtown dining week 2017 and the menu had some great selections. Very friendly and attentive staff. Sadly, a kitchen mishap prevented me from trying the cheesecake but the coke and jack bread pudding was delicious! An added plus is the occasional whiff of the freshly popped corn which is a unique start to the meal!
Took some friends there who had never been. It was more crowded than normal but that was due to Dining Week in Memphis. It was a nice surprise. The fried pork chop and Gouda macncheese was excellent and for dessert the cinnamon cheesecake was great. This place just never disappoints.
SOB was such a great pick! We went there because they were on Triple D and they did not disappoint!! I know there are a lot of options near Beale St. but the duck, mac&cheese and brussel sprouts (yes! Really!) are SO worth it. The Main Street trolley goes right by, so no excuses! Give it a try!
I've been here a few times and I always order pretty much the same thing -which will be the grilled salmon it's usually on point no imperfections --however this particular visit the salmon was extremely well done to the point it was burnt but on a positive note I really enjoyed the bacon Brussels sprouts
I will return to order the same dish and usually the same waitress wait so me and she's has a very pleasant attitude and I always patronize places they have great customer service
Great dinner. We had the cheeseplate and salads. The dessert was good; only slight disappointment was that when they brought the dessert (Elvis Churro Ice Cream Sandwich) , she said they were out of bananas. I wish she had told us beforehand. Nevertheless, everything was good. Grace was very attentive and friendly. We will definitely come back.
Really enjoyed the duck patty melt! Very flavorful and an interesting twist on classic diner fare. The space is cozy and inviting. Just up the road from the National Civil Rights Museum, also not to long of a walk from the Orpheum Theater and the frenetic Beale Street.
Small place, small menu, big flavors. I had zucchini pasta, very good but portion was small. Drinks were creative (blueberry lemonade cocktail). It is not bar food. It is good, creative food. Nice ambience, not dingy. Modern look. Friendly, helpful service. We were there early evening, so not crowded. Just South of Orpheum Theater.
