This was our first visit there and it was very nice. The jazz session was great.
Enjoyed the ambiance. Service and staff were great. Enjoyed the entertainment, The appetizer portion could have been larger, the entrée was delicious but small portion, and the dessert was not appetizing at all. It would have been better if a small portion of their own homemade dessert had been served. Overall the amount we spent per person, including the cover charge for the show (which I was told on the phone would not be charged), the taxes and gratuity was not in comparison to what we received compared to other restaurants we've gone to for Restaurant Week. Will try it again at another time from their regular menu which I'm sure we'll spend about the same amount, but will get a better selection and portion for our buck.
We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at South. The food was terrific, the drinks were interesting, the music was fantastic, our waitress was fun as well as competent, and the ambience was perfect. I'm looking forward to many return trips.
Jazz Club is great...lots of talented performers, great price, excellent food via New Orleans.
South is a great spot to hear live jazz in a friendly environment with excellent Southern cuisine. Tuesday nights feature the Jazz Jam where you can hear the house band plus up and coming local performers with no cover charge. Great value!
We came here for my fiancé’s birthday and I think we have a new favorite place!
The lounge/bar area was lovely. The bartenders were friendly and made magically delicious libations while we waited to be seated. Let me say that everyone who worked here was super nice and very accommodating while still knowing when to leave us alone.
We ate in the jazz lounge so we could see the band and I’m so glad we did. Champion and her guys were AMAZING and put on a fabulous show. The atmosphere was so pretty and romantic.
We began with a cheese board that was served with pickled veggies and Parmesan crackers and was a nice start. My fiancé ordered a burger and fries (so original) which was served on a wood board and was very juicy and delicious. I had the shrimp and grits which were over the top!
We’re so glad we found this place, we’ll definitely be back. They also have another restaurant directly behind for more vegan options called Green Soul we want to try too.
Wonderful intimate place to hear some great jazz, with great food, wonderful service. Or just go for the cornbread. One skillet of cornbread and a mixed drink next time around we're thinking.
Food: great, service: great, ambiance: great, price: comparable. Space: a little cramped, reminiscent of that of a comedy club but this add to the cozy factor. Overall: great place to wine and dine.
Birthday was the occasion but we did not get a cake or a happy birthday.
Great for a date night. Nice music and staff is friendly..
The reservation experience was not good. I reserved through Open Table as I have done many times before. Apparently, the restaurant called me twice (an unrecognized number so I did not check right away) stating that I would lose my reservation if I didn't provide a credit card. They also changed the reservation time. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't even full. Too much stress just for a dinner reservation.
I was there on a date for New Years Eve, the food was delicious and the entertainment was amazing. The service was a little slow, however understandable given the event!
Great place to eat with family, friends or just for a date. The ambiance is really nice and is the food is good but the portions can be a bit bigger for the price.
We booked a 7:45pm table in the jazz club portion of the restaurant on a night that had 7pm and 9:30pm showtimes. We had never been to South before so we didn't know that our reservation had to coincide with one of the specific showtimes. We thought we'd just be seated at our reservation time, and the music would be playing in the background. Boy, were we wrong - diners, be warned! We were told to wait at the bar and that we'd be seated shortly. We ordered a drink. 25 minutes go by. We finish our drinks. Another 15 minutes go by... I ask the hostesses when we will be seated. It is at *this* time that they explain that we'll be seated with the next show... what?! Why were we able to make a 7:45pm dinner reservation then? We order another round of drinks. Service at the bar was extremely slow - the people on either side of us couldn't get the bartenders' attention, they need more staff. Finally at 9:15pm we are led into the jazz club for dinner. It is absolutely unacceptable to reserve a 7:45pm reservation and not be seated until 9:15. We had a gift certificate and that's probably the only reason we stayed, otherwise we would've looked elsewhere and forfeited the jazz. The food was pretty good and came quickly once seated. The jazz was very good, which redeemed the night for us. Another thing that isn't mentioned when you book for dinner is that there's a $15 pp cover charge for the jazz, on top of dinner and drinks.
This restaurant has the potential to be incredible, it just needs better management and organization. Also please make it clear on the reservation site that your reservation in the jazz club has to coincide with a showtime, otherwise you'll be seated for a later show.
We had a great time at South! We had a bit of an issue with some of our food, and I personally wish there were more vegetarian/vegan choices, but some of us got side orders so that worked out. Love seeing and hearing Jazz performers at South. Great place for live Jazz!
Our family and birthday celebration was phenomenal!!
Ate in the Jazz Club as we were seeing the show. Ambience is great! Jazz show was great!! Sat down for dinner. Ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. Way too much breading, gummy and no flavor. Ordered shrimp and grits dinner and fried chicken dinner. Shrimp and grits lacked flavor. Not enough grits, not enough shrimp and just not good. As to the fried chicken, the chicken was moist but the breading was too think and had no flavor, mashed potatoes were gummy and the broccoli was not even cooked. Not good! Lacked flavor!! Food is not good. I would go back but only to see a jazz show. Wish the food was better.
The music is wonderful. I would go back for the music and drinks. The food is nothing to write home about and the prices are high for the quality of food. I really hope they improve the food to match the music quality.
Enjoyed our 1st time at this snazzy place! Loved the jazz. The food was great too- loved the fried chicken (not greasy, real crispy & seasoned well).
Had a great chill evening listening to live Jazz. The food to me was just ok, could use more flavor. The drinks were nice. Went to the bar before and after the jazz set. Bartenders were incredibly slow, so much that we were discussing it as we waited for our drinks. Food and bartenders could be improved.
This was our first time here and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was very cozy and inviting. Service was good but not great. The southern style menu lived up to its billing as the best in Philly. The jazz was very good. The crowd was lively and energetic. I'm glad to see this place is going strong and continuing the tradition of upscale jazz venues in Philly after the closing of Zanzibar Blue. I would highly recommend this place for a special occasion or just a great dinner.
We had a great time at South last Wednesday. The performer Geraldine Oliver and her awesome band - Aaron Graves-piano, Dylan Taylor-bass, Tony Day-drums, were just exquisite! Geraldine Oliver was wonderful to listen to and watch. The Concert was very enjoyable. We're both Vegetarians, and unfortunately there's not as many choices for us. We ordered food from their side orders, and my husband couldn't get the kitchen to cook string beans tender enough for him to eat. We sent them back about 3 times, then we finally had them removed from our list. The waitress was very nice, though.
We had a terrible experience. We went to South for a pre-show dinner, before a concert at The Met. We arrived at 6 PM, thinking we had plenty of time to eat our meal and make it to an 8 PM concert a few blocks away. After some delay, we got our drinks and 3 of our appetizers came out (one person's order came out about 30 minutes after everyone else). We began to grow concerned that we were running out of time, and mentioned our need to make an 8 PM show several times. Clearly, the restaurant was overwhelmed by a large dinner crowd, but our server's way of handling this was to avoid our table as much as possible. We had to go and find water bottles on the server's stand ourselves, because she rarely came by to check on us. Finally, around 7:45, she acknowledged that our entrees weren't coming any time soon, and acted as if she was doing us a favor by saying that she "took the entrees off your bill". When we told her this was really unacceptable service, she just shrugged and said "We're really busy tonight." We never received an apology or an offer to write off our drinks or anything. Later that evening, the manager reached out with an apology via text message. But you know what they say: Too little, too late.
The ambiance was classy, concert was great and the food delicious.
I wanted to LOVE this place! What could be better than enjoying live Jazz while eating creative Southern food? From the minute we walked in however, the service was so terrible that it affected the whole experience. The hostess said "We can't see Open Table reservations, so you don't have one." Despite me showing her the reservation in the OT app on my phone, she said we still didn't have one and would "see what she could do." No apologies at all.
We were seated as requested in the Jazz room and hoped the rest of the evening would go smoothly. The room was not completely full, maybe at 75%. We were greeted promptly by our waitress, offered water and then it took min. 10 min for her to return for our drink orders. Then we waited...no joke, 20-25 min for drinks. Our waitress kept disappearing and we had to flag her down to order apps, to order dinner and to attempt get refreshes on drinks. She seemed obsessed with walking around the whole jazz room refilling waters instead of taking orders and servicing her tables. Once finally ordered, our food also took quite awhile to come, though the apps came promptly. We would've had more drinks (like maybe a glass of wine with dinner?!), but could not get someone to wait on us. The food was excellent and the jazz was great too.
We were ready to leave after being there for over 2 hours but could not get anyone to bring our check, I think my husband asked 4 different people. We finally stood up, put on coats and walked towards the door to get the manager's attention. She was apologetic about the service and offered free desserts. We declined, as we were full and the jazz performance was over and we were tired of the terrible service. They did take 20% off the check, which was better than nothing. Not sure if they were understaffed or if the service is always this slow and inattentive.
I think I would only return to have drinks and see a jazz performance and skip eating there again, as good as the food was.
Great food and jazz. Bartender needs to work on French Martinis.
I would have preferred the 30 dollar per head entertainment fee was mentioned during our reservation or even when we got there, not finding out after the bill was printed. We would have still dined, however, we all thought it would have been more appropriate to give us the choice by informing us the amount of the entertainment fee ahead of time. We've dined here before, and the fee was usually 10 or 15 dollars per head, which is a Stark difference. In closing, that was our only negative feedback, Comnunication..! We got our bill and we had to get clarification regarding where the extra 120 dollars came from.
SOUTH never disappoints...never. Been here 3x now and the food, atmosphere, music, drinks, dessert & service are excellent. Guy is a fantastic server- he was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, provided excellent recommendations and was simply a pleasure to talk to. This restaurant is a gem in Philly!
I really enjoyed the atmosphere, music and the environment. It was also an open mic/talent night after the first hour half performance. It was nice to see other people showcase their jazz talents along with the band. My only complaint was the service- and that it was slow along with the online menu did not match up with the menu in the restaurant which the server reported was outdated from the summer.
This was a great experience. The food and entertainment were excellent. I can't wait to go again.
A great combination of the kitchen from the South and live music.
It was a great evening. I thought the tables were just a bit to tight. Great for 2 people
The show was amazing and my the catfish tasted amazing, drinks where top shelf and the fruity cocktails were yummy. My girlfriend didnt enjoy her food she had an entree that had shrimp in it and I can say I tasted it and it was sort of bland. The cornbread was good but nothing out of this world. We sat in the jazz club section and like I said the performance was impeccable, but our service lacked it took a while to receive our drinks and when we were ready to order entrees our waitress was nowhere to be seen, we waited so long we just asked another waitress who kindly placed the orders for us. We will definitely be back we just hope to have a better server this time as when we looked around other tables had great service.
Had a Blast 🎉
I specifically went for the evening entertainment, and was blown away by the overall atmosphere of this place. It’s gorgeous! The stage is front and center, well lit, and the sound is well balanced. Entertainment aside, the drinks were delicious, the food was hearty and rich, and the staff: perfect. With that many people coming in for food and drink, it’s understandable you may have a little wait, but as far as I’m concerned, it’s worth it! Going again soon!
South Jazz Kitchen, aka South Restaurant, is one of our favorite places to catch Live Jazz! The food is pretty good, although I wish they had more Vegetarian/Vegan choices. We're always able to get side dishes to make a meal, so that's good. Great night-life spot!
So romantic/ can’t wait to try again
Pretty setting. Food and service average.
Indifferent clumsy service. Caesar salad disappointing. Deserts were good.
As a vegetarian I wished there were more options. Otherwise we had an amazing time dining in the Jazz Parlor. I would definitely return for a show as my dining options were limited.
