This is my second time for dinner. The service is great and very helpful. Nice place, low key but very efficient and surprisingly different dishes.
We were there on Thurs 7pm 4/19 and saw the chef preparing the dish taste the dish w a spoon and then kept mixing the meal with it, and then did it again! We complained but it wasn’t our dish, it was the next table over’s dish and they didn’t know.
Other than that, the food was great!
Great inventive tapas to choose from blackboard menu. Host/Server was excellent and described the tapas perfectly. The tapas were prepared very well. We really enjoyed them all but our favorites were the smoked beets, angiolini, squid, and fried leeks. The 2 desserts were delicious..white chocolate tart and avocado ice cream sandwiches.
Amazing experience. We were a group of 4 and decided to do the chefs tasting menu. 50 dollars a person and EVERYTHING on the menu was brought to the table, including 2 delicious desserts. We had a great time, did not at all feel rushed or overwhelmed with food brought to our food. Our waitress was great and told us we could slow down the plates coming out at anytime. Will definitely be going back again!
This place is awesome. It’s small plates made for sharing but the portions are a great size. Easily 2 can share one plate. The ingredients are always fresh and the choices are interesting combinations of flavors. We’ve never been disappointed in a meal! The service is excellent!!!
South Helm is the type of place where you can order anything off of the menu and trust that it will be amazingly delicious. The Chef's special was out of this world, as it is every time I visit (Thanks, Jon!). Great BYO with a great staff.
Always creative. They combine flavors one would never think of pairing and it is always good. Never disappointed here.
Always one of my favorite restaurants - best use of fresh ingredients creatively combined to create unique and insanely tasty dishes. Definitely go with a few people and get the Chef's Tasting!
Adrian is the consummate host!
small plates and byob. ordered based on recommendations from our server and were very impressed. reasonably priced for the quality.
Incredible food and amazing service!
The entire experience was extraordinarily. Thanks for the excellent food and service
Great tasting and creative food:-)
The avocado ice cream was AMAZING!
The idea of the chalkboard menu seemed like a good idea unless you were seated where you couldn't see it, the server had to take a picture on your phone?! So odd, have some print outs. They claim their menu is always changing but it's only one dish a month, already being such a small menu it's not convincing to go back. The food sounded alot better then executed. The true integrity of the food was lost with all the sauces and flavors put on the food. The pure and simple flavors need to be brought out. Service was great until the end. We waited a good 10 minutes for our check. Once the restaurant was full, all bets were off even getting more water. They need more than one server and one food runner.
So amazing. Everything was perfect.
Not my cup of tea....but could see how the vegetarian/health food crowd might be thrilled with this place. But if you are not really adventurous with your food choices...and prefer down to earth homey food then this is not your place. If you like to taste unusual and different concoctions, then give this small-plate place a try.
Fantastic doo, engaging staff. Small, shared-plate format gives you a taste of everything. Really unique takes on great dishes.
The food was mixed. Too heavy, fried. The short rib dish had very little meat. Clearly, creative approach to food. We were expecting more.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Philly. As a BYOB with small plates, it serves customers spectacularly good food without making them spend a fortune. We had a party here with around 25 people last summer, and everyone walked away in awe of what they'd been served. The chefs are creative and the service is excellent.
Amazing service. Amazing food. So unique. Highly recommended!
Tasting menu is the whole menu! Do it!
First time to South Helm. Small byob. ( Haven’t yet made it to Helm.) Had a great meal. Shared 5 small plates for the 2 of us. Interesting, each different and truly inventive. Short rib pierogi, smoked beets and Brussel sprouts with sun chokes were outstanding. And the desert, a gateau basque, pastry filled with white chocolate and topped with caramel, was a dream - really. Will go back.
Dinner was delicious as usual. Everyone is always friendly and the service is great. We are never disappointment.
Some of the best food being made in Philadelphia. I've never had a bad dish here, nor one I've not wished I could recreate. The tempura Leeks are one of the best things I've ever eaten.
Small, creative plates with great ambiance and service. Really unique food pairings, I love that I always try something new when I come. It's BYO which is always an added bonus. Service is always super friendly.
We celebrated a birthday and part of our party was running late. They were so accommodating and the food was amazing. Everyone loved it.
We loved the tasting menu, definitely the way to go!
We had an early reservation, so we had the place to ourselves. They serve small plates to be shared. Everything is fresh and combos are unique and very tasty. Our server was wonderful! He helped us pick dishes we both could share, especially since we have different allergies and its hard for many restaurants; not so at South Helm. The chef accommodated us and we are thankful. We will be back
Been to South Helm at least a half dozen times (and Helm well over a dozen times) and always have a great experience. Good, friendly service. Creative menu with a variety of offerings (and happy to change ingredients to accommodate dietary requests). With our party of six, they suggested the tasting menu at $50 each. Included everything on the menu! Paired with being a BYOB...and it is a great value as well. Our friends--all new to the fast-growing Helm brand--were very impressed with the meal.
Great night at South Helm. Nice, intimate place. We got there early in the evening and had a wonderful experience. The menu is varied and offers unique flavors. We had five plates, from leeks to beets to pork, sun chokes and a savory sausage/biscuit terrine, all very good. We topped it off with a tasty Basque gateau that was the exclamation point for the evening. Atop that, the chef came out and spoke to us on a few occasions, and that was really neat.
Great! Except for the loud bachelorette that joined and then our table couldn’t hear each other over them. Everything else was excellent.
Dishes were too salty. Did not live up to the hype.
Love the quirky, delicious menu and the ambience at this casual, fun restaurant. The only thing they bothered me was the bright fluorescent light emanating from the kitchen. But no matter, all in all a great time. BYOB.
Had dinner with two friends. We all loved it. One was a vegetarian and found plenty of great items to suit. The food selection was creative, unique, and highly varied. The presentation was lovely and the service was excellent. Eating was an exciting adventure.
Best meal of 2017! This is truly one if Philly's under the radar restaurants.
Great small plate dining experience. Adrian provided expert and knowledgeable service. We will be back!
Fantastic food, really superb! 4 out of the 5 dishes we had were outstanding. Our waiter was wonderful, very friendly and knowledgeable. The only issue is with the noise level. Its very loud which makes it difficult to have a conversation.
Fantastic and exciting menu. Friendly staff and great service. I would highly recommend
Every meal I've at Helm South has been divine. From the food, the ambiance, the friendly service and the gracious hospitality, every step is superbly interwoven. They are so incredibly accommodating, even making so many incredible gluten free dishes! An absolute gem in the city.
