Our outdoor seating table was slightly tilted due to the sidewalk - keeping our silverware was a challenge. It didn't make sense to have to go inside in order to be seated outside.
Otherwise, we were very grateful to the server for attentive service, the food was DELICIOUS and returning to the restaurant overall was a delight.
The Buttery never disappoints. The baked goods are so yum (the Ricotta Fritters though...omg...), the steak & eggs were both cooked and seasoned perfectly, the smoked salmon Benedict was spot on. Sweet & simple menu.
Very good food and menu. A perfect place to go for neighborhood dining. the staff is always accommodating and the food is always tasty and well prepared.
Love the menu and had a great time catching up with a friend!! Will be back!!
Having dined here before, I was excited to bring my friend from Chicago for brunch this last Saturday. Even having made a reservation, they sat us under the stairwell in a hallway. It was hard to enjoy anything else about the meal when you’re next to a coat closet and in a pathway to another room. We had the salmon eggs Benedict and huevos rancheros. The Benedict was good but the huevos lacked flavor and was sloppily presented. We were in and out in 30 minutes flat, so unfortunately will never come back here due to the other amazing restaurants that do a great brunch.
We were there celebrating my daughters engagement and our waitress was FANTASTIC. I just wish I remembered her name. Food was delicious and she did NOT rush us out.
Do not get dinner here. I regret choosing this restaurant as a Valentine’s Day date. I went a couple days after the holiday and expected to find good food in a cute space. While the restaurant portion of Buttery was cozy and comfortable, the rude waitress and lack luster food were extremely disappointing. I am very lactose intolerant and there was basically two main courses and one appetizer that I had to choose from. This place is not allergy/vegan friendly in the least. I ordered the hanger steak and it was cooked well, but it was nothing special and was overpriced for what it was. My friend’s shrimp fra diavolo was overcooked and again, basic. Why pay high prices for food you could easily make at home? I won’t be returning for the service either. The waitress barked my limited menu options at me and made it seem like asking if a dish has dairy in it is a massive inconvenience for her. I also heard her complaining loudly about customers when I went to the restroom. This place is plain awkward.
One meal did not arrive until 5 mins after everyone else’s meal and we ordered Grapefruit mimosas and received margaritas... had our server checked on us after our meal arrived we would have ordered more cocktails... however food was delicious
Great food, cocktails were very unique (a bit on the stronger side but no complaints here). A bit busy with only 1 person responsible for each table, but didn’t take away from the experience. Will definitely come again!
One of the best brunches I have eaten. Make sure to try the Ricotta Fritters! They were phenomenal!
We went to the South End Buttery for the first time on a double Valentine's date. I was looking for a cozy atmosphere with great food, and this was exactly what we got. We ate down stairs, and enjoyed the exposed brick look. The food portions were just right - plenty of options for our mixed party of meat eaters and vegetarians. High quality food, good drinks - great spot for a date.
The waitstaff are so patient and friendly. The atmosphere is cosy and sophisticated. The fries are some of the best I have ever had. The food is a well-balanced mix of classic and adventurous. Would dine there again!
I had reserved a table for 5 people for brunch a few weeks ago on Open Table, put my card down as was needed for holding the table, and also requested that our 1:15pm reservation be in the upstairs dining area since I would be with elderly folk.
We arrived to the restaurant and the upstairs dining area was completely full, and the wait staff said it would be an hour before anyone got up. I found that alarming as I made the reservation so long ago that our table was given up preemptively.
Then we had to wait an additional 15 minutes (our elderly grandparents standing awkwardly in the hallway waiting for our table) as there wasn’t EVEN a table available at said reservation time.
When we finally got seated a server didn’t come over til 1:45 and left us sitting downstairs for another 15 minutes.
Our food was great when it finally came by at this point not worth all of the seating mishaps. My grandfather and husband ordered a beer when the food was dropped that they never received. That was annoying. When checking the bill we were charged for an extra coffee (we only ordered 3 coffees and were charged for 4) but at that point I just wanted to go.
When we were leaving our server didn’t even say goodbye and instead was standing playing on his phone in the hallway.
The whole experience was terrible. My husband and I live in the neighborhood and have had many great times at The Buttery. This most recent visit might be our last. I would have figured at least maybe our appetizer was comped due to the whole seating issue but wasn’t and instead we were overcharged. I honestly regret leaving 20% as our tip especially how the server didn’t even say goodbye or have a nice day or anything.
Been here before. Used to enjoy it too.
Was supposed to have my birthday brunch here. Made a reservation for 1 o’clock. At 1:30, we were still waiting. The best excuse the hostess could come up with was that “open table over-booked us”
Please take ownership of your poor management.
We left and went over to Boston Chops and had a lovely time.
Food and service were average. Will probably not go back.
Have been many times before but the quality appears to be going down so this will no longer be on our constant rotation. Some dishes great; others a disappointment. And the tables were pushed so close together that it was hard to have a table conversation without disturbing the table next to us (or drown out their conversation).
I had big expectations. The pastries were good but everything else, including the watery tea was just OK. Would not make a special trip for it.
I sat downstairs. It is a VERY cramped space. I asked to be moved because we were SO CLOSE to other diners. I could barely hear my date because there were way too many people seated in such a small space. That being said the fireplace is a very nice touch during the winter and the decor was quality. I’m a sucker for ambiance so even with the noise and the cramped space I’d go back, perhaps during their slower periods.
The pastry basket was great! I’d recommend coming here for coffee and treats not a full blown meal as the food was not impressive. It wasn’t bad either. It was food. My date’s steak was extremely tough (although he did get it well done) and my eggs lacked flavor. Salt made up for it.
The staff was nice enough the hostess was able to seat us WAY earlier than my reservation time which was nice. They were attentive however not overly so.
Seemed like the server was overworked and overwhelmed. Got our order wrong, and never refilled our water or coffee. Very nice people but poor waitstaff. I have been quite a few times and the service is always hit or miss and negatively affects my experience, despite really enjoying the food.
Attentive waiter but Long wait for food
Coffee warm - two cups not clean
One of the most overrated restaurants I've ever been to.
Service was horrible!!! For a popular neighborhood spot, this should be improved.
excellent food. terrific wait staff, nice dining areas both upstairs and downstairs
A buzzy south end brunch in a cozy environment provides a great environment for catching up with friends over reasonably priced food! The ricotta fritters are a must for Nutella lovers. We will be back!
I went for dinner on Thursday night with two girlfriends and we ate in the bar. The bartender waited on us and he was super nice. I had the salmon and it was delicious. My friends had the chicken and chicken Parmesan and both were very good. Nice cozy ambience.
always looking for a place close to the BCA and this is now a go to place for us.
Wonderful, solid neighborhood bistro. Relaxed, convivial atmosphere with comfort food the way you MOMath made it if your moma was a master chef.
Great burger, fries and cocktails
Had always wanted to try it but was disappointed when we finally did. Came for brunch. Not too busy as it was a holiday weekend. Service was slow though the server himself was nice. Water and coffee refills took forever. One of our 5 meals was the total wrong thing and it took a while for the right one to come out. I have to say that overall, the basket of muffins and bread was the best part. Our meals were nothing special.
Cozy, warm dining room with fireplace. Ideal place for an intimate family dinner before show at Calderwood Pavillion. Will be back!
Was our first time at South End Buttery and was a great experience. The waitress was very pleasant and he food was very fresh and so good. We had meatloaf, fishing chips and the arugula salad with shrimp. We all shared two deserts we had the fresh fruit with carrot cake and then ice cream chocolate cookies with expresso. Wonderful meal and great place to relax with friends/family.
WONDERFUL! Cannot wait to go back. GREAT bartender!
South End Buttery was completely incompetent and made us wait over 45 minutes to tell us they couldn’t seat us. I highly recommend you take them off the top of the list for brunch places
When we arrived at the set time for our reservation, there were no tables ready. The hostess had apparently sat a walk in , leaving them without room for our 6 person party, despite our prior reservations. No one apologized, the staff appeared frustrated with each other, but no one addressed us. We waited over 35 minutes for a table- and no one ever apologized or even acknowledged the error or wait time
Food was average. Frozen French fries. Glasses were not clean. Multiple items on menu were not available.
Food was wonderful! The drinks were ok, wait staff was also ok.
I’ve heard lots of good things about this place and was excited to try it! Reviews told me to request sitting upstairs, which ended up being a very small, way too brightly lit room with four tables and a very small bar. A bit too sleepy of an atmosphere for my taste. We ordered the burrata appetizer, which was very good! I had the chicken pot pie for my entree, which was very watery and had too much chicken and not enough vegetables. However, the puff pastry on top was very good.
Great spot, cozy eating area downstairs, food was great.
