I've been to the Buttery several times, but this was the first time for my date. We both had a wonderful time and our dinners were delicious!
I was so bummed! I always recommend and take guests from out of town to the Buttery, it's one of my favorite spots. I brought my boyfriend's family on Sunday for brunch. All of our food came out cold and our server forgot to bring our home fries and butter for toast, which we asked for multiple times. As it was a recommendation by me, I was embarrassed.
Was there for early Sunday brunch. Would have given a higher rating but our party of 6 was seated downstairs in a makeshift seating area in the hallway leading to the larger dining area. Constant traffic going by. The rest of the restaurant seemed charming, but felt we got the short end of the stick. Very friendly efficient service, and everyone pleased with their food.
Fun change from west end. Grapefruit mimosa was a nice change. Liked the ricotta fritters, fresh and different. Pancakes were disappointing. Heavy
The scone is amazing, but the pancakes were bland.
Love this place, food is fantastic. Only downside is how cramped you are when seated at the two, two seater tables downstairs. My girlfriend and I kept having adjust our seats to let servers and guests pass by.
Great night out with friends. Only negative was some beers and some wine ordered was out because they were changing their offering soon. Otherwise I would highly recommend it. Upstairs is noisy, but Downstairs isn’t as much.
Too loud, absolutely no need for OH music on a Saturday.
Food and service were excellent. The Buttery is a favorite and a staple of the neighborhood.
Dad in town for the weekend. Very nice meal and great atmosphere. Loved the fra diavolo
probably my worst dining experience. the people ahead of us "checking in" were told that the place was actually overbooked and although they used opentable and reserved a time slot, a table did not exist for them. maybe they were lucky. when my boyfriend and i got to our table in the basement, we could hardly hear each other. the waiter took about 10 minutes to bring us a glass and another 5 to fill them with water. that was one of TWO times he filled my water. my boyfriend only got his water filled that first time. the food took 1 hour and 15 minutes to come out. but the thing was, the staff seemed like this was extremely typical. did not apologize or offer to compensate. and while the food was pretty good, it was definitely not good enough to make me want to wait that long again. i will only recommend this restaurant to my enemies.
The room was very load and the service was the worst I have experienced in years. One of the managers stepped in an things improved, but we won’t be going back.
The food was delicious and the service was amazing!!
First time here and had a great experience. Our sever was lovely and the food was great. Only negative was that we were at a two top in the middle of the dining area, which always feels awkward. Would recommend and will go back again!
There was only one other table eating on a nice Friday night (interesting, and should have been a sign).
Hostess did not like that we were talking to the other table about common vacations. It made no sense she inserted herself between our tables.
Overall vibe of restaurant was terrible. Waiter had no interaction with hostess or bartender. Hostess had no interaction with waiter or bartender. Bartender had no interaction with hostess or waiter. For such a small place, one would think the staff would work together. Again, the vibe was just not right, which probably explains why nobody was eating there.
Sadly, we were very disappointed. We made a reservation. We were taken on time and seated downstairs, which was lovely. Unfortunately, the downstairs is very small and we were seated directly next to a family with a loudly crying baby. We asked to move and were seated in the bar. The service was mediocre at best. We ordered three dinners. One was a salad topped with chicken. It was served without the dressing that comes with it. The dressing was provided when we asked for it, but it was a delay. The second dish was a pasta dish that did not taste fresh at all. The vegetables tasted as if they were cooked days ago. The third dish was enjoyable. Too many issues to recommend this restaurant to others. We will not be back.
Always consistently delicious! Food, drinks and desserts never disappoint!
Everything was so great! Staff was super nice and food was delicious! Only thing was maybe a little background music downstairs:)
Great food, service. Small place, and is popular so crowded, tough to walk in with a gro and no reservation. Accommodated strollers. Will go back!
I was eating solo at the bar. The manager was very passionate about his wines and I tasted a few. The Brussels sprouts were beautiful and the pan seared salmon with lentils and mash was cooked well. (The only thing that is a little awkward that happens in US restaurants is that they bring the main course before I finished the starter.) Two large glasses of wine and two courses came to $80 including tips.
We had an 8:30 Reservation. They did not seat us until 9:05. After seating us the service was slow. The food was good, but not worth that wait.
Food and service are always great here. We were downstairs this time and it was pretty loud due to several large parties.
Food was very good. Service was pretty poor with an inattentive server who we had to call over each we wanted something. I’m guessing it was more of an anomaly than the norm so I would nonetheless recommend it to others.
Notwithstanding a reservation, we (two women) were seated in the lounge area. The bartender energetically used a shaker throughout our meal. It was hard to hear what my friend was saying.
I ordered the shrimp fra diavolo. The linguine were way over cooked. My friend ordered the hanger steak. While it tasted good, it was super tough. The food was uncharacteristically disappointing.
I’m not going back any time soon.
I had heard good things about this place so decided to give it a try. The poached eggs had hard yolks and the eggs benedict was flavorless, not served on a toasted english muffin, but rather on a soft roll. Breakfast sandwich was just ok, bread was bad and yolks on the eggs were also hard. Also, $13.00 for a cocktail is pretty standard in Boston, however, I expected the "adult iced coffee" to come in a pint glass for that price. Instead it came in a smaller juice glass. Drink tasted good, but the amount was not worth the price.
Pancakes are a must. A great place for a cozy weekend brunch
I am always on a hunt for oatmeal, as I am allergic to eggs. When I found it at South End Buttery I made a reservation. When we sat down with menus there was no oatmeal on the menu, even though reviews had raved about it a month before.
It was explained to me that they only sold oatmeal in their cafe, which is in THE SAME BUILDING. Rather than offering to get that for me so that we could continue our dining experience and my friend could order from their egg menu, I was informed that we would need to give up our seats and find our own in their "no reservations" cafe. The only non egg and wheat breakfast on this menu was granola with milk or yogurt and almonds. (I am allergic to eggs, almonds, and mildly to dairy)
The oatmeal was good because it had extras like pumpkin and flax seeds, but I wish that they would help out all dairy allergy people by not cooking it with milk (just as creamy with water). I would also appreciate it if the "for here" ceramic bowls were accompanied by a real spoon, rather than a plastic silver one, as our planet can use all the help decreasing plastic it can get, and the metal spoon is a nicer dining experience.
Waitress was inattentive bordering on hostile. The food was nothing special. My drink was good and that’s the best thing I can say. Very disappointed.
Brunch was great! I love that they take reservations.!
Great food and perfect for a girls brunch or a date!
Service was great, but my food was a little sub-par for the price-- had the steak and eggs and could not even cut the steak despite the fact that I was given the biggest knife I've ever seen.
Ricotta fritters are to die for. Located in a very cute area of South End Boston
I felt a little rushed. Couldn't have a leisurely meal
Our first time there after hearing about this place over the years. We were seated in Cafe area - didn’t realize restaurant seating was downstairs. Server was nice, but service extremely slow. Maybe busy with tables downstairs. Even though we weren’t in a hurry, it was noticeably slow making dinner a little awkward being it our suggestion to dine here. Food was ok, nothing where you would say it was worth the wait. Maybe breakfast or brunch would be a better experience.
Great dinner. Great selection of food and wine. Wonderful service with our waitress Rachel.
Good food. Cute place. Service was very slow.
My husband and I love this place. Great food ,romantic and affordable. We ran out of bread for our burrata and we were given more. The place doesn't disappoint.
Everything was excellent, except the service was a little slow
I would recommend the Buttery to a friend who doesn't mind how loud it was. We could barely keep up a conversation.
We had just come from South Station and so we had a few small bags, and I found the hostess extremely rude when we were trying to check in and wait for our table, and then when she showed us to our table.
The waitress was extremely friendly and polite, and somewhat made up for the poor experience with the hostess.
This place was so good I want to make a standing reservation and go every week!
