Came for a birthday celebration. Had a reservation for 8:15 on a Friday. Upon arrival, the restaurant wasn’t super busy. Was sat in the cafe section - although the cafe was closed. Should have asked to be sat in the bar room or downstairs. Server was horrible - forgot to put drinks in, could not recommend a single thing, had no knowledge of menu questions, did not clear plates before dropping off our bill, etc. Disappointing to say the least. Will not return.
Everything you’ve heard is true. One of the best brunches ever. I had the burger and it was amazing. My husband is gluten intolerant and he had numerous options.
Good brunch place !
Great place for brunch in Boston! Gluten free options.
Nice neighborhood spot. Food is good and creative. Service is attentive but not overbearing. Comfortable dining room
Cramped for brunch. Our food order got overlooked so it took 45 minutes to get breakfast. Food was delicious but our silverware and cups were all dirty which was easily the worst part.
Food was amazing and the restaurant is cozy. Very romantic.
Had a great Valentine’s Day dinner. Food was amazing. We had a great glass of wine and we’ll definitely be back.
The downstairs area of the restaurant is very cool (as is the upstairs area). Food and ambiance is great, the downside was that it seemed the waiter may have had too many tables to take care of (reading previous reviews, seems to be common).
Overall great. Ice tea was tasteless
This is my go-to spot for guests visiting Boston. They have never disappointed in the seven years I have been going here. The eggs benedict, pancakes and french toast are the best! Great cocktails too. Make reservations days in advance. It's a small place so the tables are quite cozy. However, once you get your food, that's all you can focus on! Worth the prices!
I was expecting to sit in the small space I saw thru the windows. I was pleasantly surprised when there was a whole downstairs full of tables and a fireplace! Yummy food. Wished I could have eaten more off the menu. My cappuccino was large n yummy, and hubby's oj was refreshing.
Three of us dined and it was delightful. My hanger steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly, and definitely try the salted caramel cupcake for dessert! Our waitress was really personable but seemed frazzled, but we got what we ordered in the right amount of time, so ultimately it was fine. I'll definitely go back.
One of the best brunches we’ve had in Boston. I got their breakfast sandwich and my husband got the pancakes. Both were incredible.
I really wanted to like this place. Super cute looking, but the seating downstairs is really tight so my husband and I were elbow to elbow with another couple. The service was great! But the food portions are pathetic. My husband got Huervos Rancheros and when they brought it out I almost laughed. The portion size was very small and the price was $14 (for maybe $2 worth of food) so I guess you're paying for the location. He also said it wasn't very tasty. I got the french toast (2 slices). It was yummy but I gave a piece to my husband whose meal was tiny, and honestly, we both left hungry. Our meal came to $37 (not including tip) together for two coffee's and two food plates. We left pretty disappointed.
Friendly staff and great bartender on Sunday brunch!
Met a friend there for brunch. We had 1:30 reservations and they were able to seat us promptly even though they initially warned us that they were 15 to 20 minutes behind. The brunch menu is a great selection of items both mains and small eats. We shared their pastry basket which was a good start for two and could be a meal for one. I had the eggs benedict with ham and cheddar. Came out promptly though the eggs were done "harder" than I would have expected. Was in the downstairs room which is tight space and can get noisy. Over all a pleasant dining experience, a popular neighborhood spot and would definitely go back.
The downstairs is extremely loud and service is slow on Saturday brunch.
Cute little place. Tables are very close together so not great for an intimate dinner but good for a yummy meal!
Normally good comfort food, but this night the burgers we're overcooked and dry and the parm had much too much garlic. Disappointing.
Great food and service. Went before a show at Speakeasy.
Third time for me. First and second visits were excellent. This one was less than. An early reservation for 5 of us before theatre. Seated by the fireplace on a cold day - plus! Only one other table seated, then a part of 3 came in, one of whom had a cough that echoed throughout the small space and continued all through dinner. Not something the restaurant can control, but it was very annoying.
The server was helpful early on, but as the place filled up, she was harder to find. Water glasses remained empty, a request for wine was not filled until the end of the meal.
The food was ok, but the above plus another unfortunate happening, shadowed the meal. We will return though, as anyone can have a bad day.
SE Buttery is overall a great establishment, from day 1. The Brusselsprouts was dee-lish. The lobster mac'n cheese was a miss. It lacked flavor and very disappointing. They did make it up with the apple crisp. I frequent SE Buttery, and this is the first time I was let down by the entree. Please don't let it keep you away, just don't order the mac'n cheese.
Super Saturday neighborhood brunch date. Eric the waiter was super and most gracious. Definitely a go to brunch spot.
One of our meals (ravioli) was a smaller portion than expected. The salmon, however, was average size. Both were delicious. The roasted Brussels sprout starter was amazing!
Great wine choices. I felt the chocolate mousse stood out as the showstopper above the very good meal. Get there early on a Friday, and you'll have a very quiet experience. My 3.5hr experience (by choice) was fantastic with a great attentive server the entire time. She checked in at all the right times.
Amazing service and delicious food
Well, the food was excellent, as per usual. Sadly, it’s the coldest day in Boston I can ever remember, and we were seated at a table right near a door... each time it was opened there was a blast of literally arctic chill. Service was also a bit subpar, we had to ask for milk and spoons to stir our coffee.
Loved it for Saturday brunch. Very busy, great ambience in the bar and downstairs by the fire. Noisy, but tight cozy space. Excellent, efficient and friendly service. Food was fine.
LOVED our meal here and the service was wonderful! Highly recommended!
The quality of food seems to have gone down, not the attention to detail, taste and appearance that it used to have.
Great atmosphere, great food. Small bakery with intimate seating in back makes for a fun ambiance and home cooked feeling.
South End Buttery is always a good choice, especially for brunch. The dining areas are cozy, staff is attentive, and the food is consistently well prepared and delicious. Highly recommended.
Food was good, service wasn't, our server never asked us we needed refills, we were sitting there for some time. Very young servers and, they spent a lot of time talking with each other rather than taking care of the customers.
Brunch with friends - cozy and delicious!
Cozy, lively, rustic dinner spot!
We had booked a table for 4 in the dinning room but when we arrived the table is too small for four and is not comfortable so they offered us a table in the cafe which was ok but noisy and not comfortable
However the food and the service was very good and we will definitely recommend it for the service and seasonal menu
The restaurant was very cozy..service was great and food was good (we went for breakfast). Hostess area could have been friendlier..this having been first time there..did not greet or direct us anywhere..no hello..how can I help you. etc? Other than that small issue..highly recommend!
Given all the positive reviews, my date and I went in with high hopes. The service was friendly but not fast and the food was really only fair. We were seated right away although we arrived 20 minutes early for our reservation. We then proceeded to wait. And wait. And wait for our server to acknowledge us. When she finally came over, I ordered my wine and my date asked what scotches were available. She disappeared again for five minutes and finally returned with a list, promptly forgetting that I had already ordered a glass of wine. Drinks were delivered 10 minutes later by another server. Our server wandered around the room cleaning tables and servicing other tables until we finally had to ask her to take our order. She seemed somewhat surprised by the request despite the fact that we had been sitting with our menus down for at least five minutes. (Please keep in mind that there were only 2 other tables for her to manage at that time.) Our appetizers arrived promptly and were quite good (cheese dip and an arugula salad). The entrees however were a real disappointment. The 1/2 roasted chicken was drowned in a balsamic glaze that was far too heavy on the balsamic and otherwise without additional flavoring, served over local squash that had been roasted beyond recognition. It's not generally a good sign when you find yourself adding additional salt and pepper with each subsequent bite. The salmon entree was flavorless, dry and even a little "fishy". The salmon was so pale that I actually considered that it might not be "real" salmon. Food fraud is real folks! Overall, our experience was underwhelming. Not recommended.
