My mom , a friend, and I had brunch to celebrate my birthday which was Saturday, 9/18. The restaurant was very busy. our server was lovely and our food was delicious and came out promptly without us feeling rushed.
Always great! Outdoor patio is very comfortable. Food delicious. Service great.
I really wanted to like this cafe. It’s tucked away in a more residential area and has outdoor seating. But I found the staff to be unpleasant and made me feel less than. I also thought the food was mediocre for the price and long wait times. And sad to say but pastries were not great. Boston has so many better bakeries! In addition, the menu was difficult to navigate considering where you were in the restaurant determined what menu you could order from. Reservations are a must here if you do decide to go. Or order ahead if you just want coffee and pastries.
This was our Anniversary brunch but we were made to go elsewhere :(
South End Buttery supposed to be a dog friendly place? Atleast that was our understanding. Disappointed with how the waitress communicated and interacted with us. There was no courtesy or willingness to help out to make sure we are seated properly so that our dog is not an hindrance to their other customer. We ended up finding another place nearby and drive there.
Very hard to find parking nearby.
The food is really good and creative. It is not a very welcoming place - maybe that is Boston. We haven’t lived here in 20 years. The host is pretty curt and wasn’t very kind to the woman ahead of us who wanted a highchair for her infant. It seemed that he was most focused on letting us know that we needed to leave our table in 90 minutes. I understand the need to turn over tables, but it’s breakfast food and it just doesn’t take that long. So he could lighten up and figure out a nicer way to deliver this message. Just started the meal with a strange vibe. Our server was nice but what breakfast place doesn’t refill your coffee? We learned this after the table next to us was admonished for asking. So overall, great food but the staff could use some lessons in grace.
We always love buttery!
Food was room temperature, bordering on cold. Under-staffed resulted in long delays to get a simple cup of coffee, and refills are no longer a thing. So a second cup results in a charge and a new to-go cup and lid (not very eco). Then, add a tapping dog thanks to an owner who tethered it to a lamppost while she ran into the bakery to get a cuppa joe? It was difficult to have a conversation with my friend.
Usually the Buttery is top-notch. This felt like an off day, but it will be awhile before I go back.
Breakfast is well worth the trip and cost. One of my favorite Boston restaurants. I highly recommend.
Two eggs with pancakes is one of the best combinations for brunch, and the Buttery makes excellent pancakes.
Awesome brunch and staff
went for a birthday dinner and it was pretty nice. Two other tables were also celebrating. Was a bit loud but still a great time. The spaces was a bit small (we went down the stairs to this cool ambience)
Get food and beautiful building.
Great food, great menu, lovely people but slow service, especially for bar service. Shouldn’t take 20+ minutes to get your first drink.
Staff was friendly and upbeat. I was even moved outside at my request even though there were no tables available initially. The problem outside were flies. Tiki torches or spraying for bugs would be a good idea. I feel like service was very good but also a little slow.
the food was so good, nice outside dining, our server was delightful
Great meal. We sat outside which was nice and the food was excellent. Will be back.
Went to brunch on a Sunday and had a great time. We were seated outside which was perfect. The smoked salmon and ricotta fritters are delicious!
We booked an outdoor table but when we showed up they said there were none available. Very frustrating given we planned ahead and specifically requested to be outside.
Wonderful brunch with nice outdoor seating. The tables were a little too close together for me, but otherwise it was a great place to be on a sunny Sunday!
The food and ambiance are delightful! I would definitely recommend it for brunch.
Food was awesome, I recommend the home fries and the wild mushroom omelette was killer. Service was wonderful and making a reservation was super easy.
Recommended to come here and did no disappoint!
Love the flexibility of the staff. Super customer friendly and the food is delish
There were a few bees flying around toward the end of our meal. Overall great place and delicious food!
The food was fabulous…the service , the lovely table in the bar…all fabulous!!!!
The downstairs can be loud when there are large parties seated.
It was so loud in the dining room that it was difficult to hear the conversation at our table (of 4 people). The service was just ok. The food was delicious though! I would recommend an outdoor reservation next time.
Reservations a must for Sunday brunch if you don’t enjoy waiting! Great neighborhood place.
Absolutely delicious dinner! Servers were kind and attentive, but the food was the highlight of the night. I’ve never been so happy to walk away feeling ill from fullness. I recommend getting the hibiscus Prosecco drink and sitting outside.
Great food & exceptional service. Thank you for a lovely experience.
The restaurant was not set up for dinner dining. Once the bakery closed which was early, there was no dessert or coffee to be serviced.
When we made the reservation, that information should have been shared. We had planned to have a complete meal with out of town friends. The meal was cut short because the restaurant was closing early since it could not offer a full dinner experience.
Worst restaurant I’ve been to in Boston in a while
They really packed everyone together
Food was extremely overpriced and under proportioned
Have been looking forward but will never go back
We've always had great food & service at the South End Buttery. It's our go to place for a Boston Brunch!
Fantastic breakfast. My friend and I got the Yuzu mimosa - never had Yuzu before and it was yummy. For our meals we split the french toast and the breakfast torta. My friend said the torta was the best breakfast sandwich she has ever had. It was quite yummy - loved the pickled onions to give it some acid. French toast was amazing too, and our server was super nice and attentive. Will definitely be back!
Well worth the drive to Boston on a Saturday morning.
Food was ok. People were very nice! It was weirdly quiet
I always enjoy dining at the South End Buttery! I make a point of having dinner there each time I visit Boston!
Slow to get the check at the end but the food was good - especially the salmon eggs Benedict !
The restaurant did a great job of accommodating our reservation although there had been a water leak that day. They called me earlier in the day to state we would need to be seated outside and when we got there and the problem had been resolved they offered us seating indoors in a lovely and quiet area complete with fireplace!
The salmon was the best I have had in years! Food was delicious, although the wait staff seemed a little rattled from their experiences that day. I definitely recommend the restaurant and will be back!
