What Insiders Are Saying
Sotto is one of the more low-key bars around 14th Street, and the live jazz and good cocktails make it a good place to end the night.
Came in for date night on a Tuesday. To our surprise we didn’t need a reservation since the restaurant was empty. In addition to a comedy show about to be performed. Overall everything was great but the food could use a little more seasoning though.
An excellent music venue. Large stage for musicians. Good acoustics. Tables not crowded together. Food from Ghibellina is excellent. Service Outstanding.
The food was exceptional. The Bartenders are your guide to nirvana. The ambience was perfect and on Tuesday evening there is phenomenal comedy with great local and rising star comedians. Go, Eat, Drink, Laugh, Drink some more
The music is wayyyy too loud. I understand that when a band is playing that the music may be at a higher level however, on breaks, the house music was too loud. It was difficult for the bartender and servers to hear us when speaking.
We went here for my son to get the jazz experience... it was everything we wanted and more. The food was phenomenal!
Wonderful wait staff and great jazz music. The meal was delicious!
I visited Sotto for a performance and prepaid for tickets. When we arrived there was no host/hostess to seat us. We found someone who was behind the bar and he sat us. Service was extremely slow. The waiter kept apologizing saying they were short handed. There was only 1 bartender working for the whole place. I enjoyed the musical performance and the food but the service was just too slow. I found the drinks to also be on the expensive side but I understand they have a happy hour.
The jazz group was young, hot and great musicians! The food...especially my pasta was excellent as was our pate....my daughter loved her salad....the service was a bit slow but I loved the ambience! Peggy M Spates
This was our second pre-theater dinner at Sotto, and I still appreciate that the happy hour menu is available at the tables, not just the bar. The happy hour drink and food specials changed since our last visit, and everything we've eaten or drunk here has been excellent.
We attended during DC jazz fest and the show and location was great. We had a large group but there were also small tables. Food, music, drinks and location was great!
Great show, met new friends, food was delish, service was excellent & we will become frequent customers.
Been to Sotto several times - for happy hour and most recently for dinner before a show. Lighting, decor and service all work together to give intimate vibes. Plus there’s live music which is always a win.
Great time for my first time!! For food I had a cheese board and the spinach risotto it was good just a lot to finish!! awesome service from the bartenders can’t remember her name but she has a cut with a ponytail! Totally had a good time even though my date sucked lol glad they had jazz!!
Great food, the black squid ink pasta was amazing! Ambience was sexy! Servers were good.
Fun place in
Nice atmosphere. Live jazz.
Had a great time! Music and Tap performance was fantastic!! Mr. Tyler Leak & Co. were Fabulous!! Awesome time for a mid week outing!! Drinks always superb!!
I like that we didn't have to sit at the bar to get happy hour specials. Food, drink, and service were all excellent. It was quiet when we arrived for our pre-theater dinner but was picking up as we left. We missed the evening music and the post-theater pizza specials, but we'll be back.
My friends and I enjoyes the happy hour food and drink options, service, dinner options, ambiance, live music, and location.
Wonderful evening - good music, great staff. My wife and I had a great date and will definitely go back the next time we're in DC.
Nice evening at Sotto, but I️ forgot about the live music when reserving and the occasion and group weren’t appropriate for the atmosphere. That’s on me, though. Aside from some occasional slow-ish service, our food and drinks were well done and enjoyed.
Great place to hang with friends. Food was great. small plates to share which was nice. We were able to make a reservation for 10 people online which is unheard of in DC so that was super convenient. The band was awesome. Not too loud but vibrant. Very energetic.
Make a reservation!
We were surprised to to find that we would have has to pay a $20 cover charge if our dinner reservation lasted past 9pm. We had 8 pm reservations! We ate quickly and left. The place was nice but very small and crowed. The wait staff seemed overwhelmed but the live music was GREAT! I would definitely go back just for the show next time
Sotto continues to be one of my favorite spots in DC. Creative cocktails; great food with satisfying portions; unique ambiance. Highly recommend.
Food was great and live music was even better. Totally coming back in the near future.
we had a good time. food was good. small portions. the band announced in the website was not the one playing.
very stylish place, good music--though generally too loud for talking.....tasty food but more like tapas portions, so-pricey for what it is
Wonderful place for a date. It doesn’t get crowded on Saturday night until around 9:00 pm. So make early reservations if you want a quiet dinner.
Great food, music, entertainment and atmosphere!
Music was great, food not so great.
We had apps during happy hour. - not very good, the cold calamari salad wasn’t cold and was mostly mushy potatoes.
We decided to just enjoy the music and skip dinner.
i would not go back to eat there.
Just an around great evening. Nicole Saphos was terrific,
The ribs and cauliflower were the only good plates to order. The sausages were over cooked but since I already sent back the pork belly since they were also over cooked and had more fat than meat, I ate some of the sausage. The cheese plate was good but it's hard to mess that up. The bar service was good so I will go back for drinks and music only.
I booked a reservation for a group of 10 friends, some of whom had never met. We were given the semi-private space near the door. It was beyond perfect. We all ordered the craft cocktails (they are Beyonce themed) and everyone was very happy with their selections. The food was also excellent. We ordered 2-3 small plates per person. There was not a single issue with our orders, and we were a fairly demanding group (meaning, we were ordering a lot of food and drink throughout the dinner). The amazing live jazz music was the cherry on top. Our waiter was Dominic, and he was fantastic. Never dropped the ball, attentive but not overbearing, and accommodated all of our requests.
very accommodating and nice atmosphere with band playing in the background.
My group and I had an amazing time at Sotto. We sat in a more private seating area. Our waiter was attentive and we all had a great time. The live music and dj'd music was great throughout the night. We will definitely be back.
The server was amazing . Food needs a little more touch up . There not meals . It's more like a starter meal .
Dropped in after a seminar on the Jazz Age at the Smithsonian. Sotto's speakeasy décor seemed appropriate to end the evening.
Our waiter was very friendly and helpful.
I got the Beignets followed by the sausage sampler while my girlfriend had the glazed cauliflower and the beef brisket. Everything was very tasty and the drinks were well made and (after she prompted the waiter) generous.
The floor show by the NIcole Saphos Jazz Quartet was delightful.
We will certainly return to Sotto.
Yes, there is great jazz in DC! Lovely little jazz club. Not easy to see the Sotto's sign on the narrow doorway sandwiched between Ghimbellina's and Black's. We had walked by Sotto's countless times without knowing it existed. We went to see one of the musician's in the jazz band and enjoyed drinks and a few tapas. It's a very nice basement venue, good service, clean rest rooms and the stars of the evening- the jazz band!
This almost hidden gem is a great example of why DC is a contender to NYC for unique and world class music. The atmosphere, the modern decor, the top notch musical talent, craft cocktails, and moderate volume level allow of a unique and somewhat magical experience.
