Sotto Sopra Ratings and Reviews
I went for restaurant week. I had the mussels, gnocchi and creme brulee. All three were excellent. My friend had the polenta, papardelle and tiramisu. All treated really fresh as well. I will definitely come back here. I'm lucky to have restaurant week because it allows me to try places like Sotto Sopra.
An lovely culinary experience! Food, service & ambience were all 1st class. Only complaint was with the wine list - least expensive bottle was $39 and I believe there was only one of these (reds). There are so many really good wines at reasonable prices today, they should offer some choices in the upper 20s and low 30s. I would love to go back, but I can't imagine dinner without wine and they do not offer any in a reasonable price range.
We had 8:30 reservations for NYE. These reservations were made at the end of November. We arrived a few minutes before 8:30 and were not seated until 9:20. There were plenty of other people waiting for their reservations as well and in such a small space, things were quite cramped. One of the hostesses (long dark hair) seemed so overwhelmed she didn’t offer any consolation for those of us (or anyone else) waiting. We even had to re-check in after we had been there for a while.
Once we were seated our server was wonderful and the food was delicious. The server and the bus boy gave us several complementary items for our long wait, which was nice. Once we were seated, it was near perfection, but the 50 minute wait for our table despite a reservation was very disappointing.
I made reservations here for the night of New Years Eve. I arrived with my date and the place was all but full of other people out enjoying the holiday. We were quickly sat and shortly after greeted by our server who had great knowledge of the menu & specials. We shared the Salmon Tar Tar as an appetizer which was very good. I had the Pan Seared Halibut which was excellent along with a gin cocktail that was tasty. After our meal we split the Chocolate Pistachio Creme Brulet which was maybe my favorite part of the meal. For being a very busy evening, all of our drinks and dishes were served in a very timely manner.
My husband and I visited the restaurant after an event in Baltimore that was near by. We were seated immediately after we checked in for our reservation. We had the calamari and tomato soup for starters which was excellent. Everything we ate was fresh and prepared to perfection. Can’t wait to go back!
Fabulous Baltimore Italian mainstay; great service and cozy atmosphere; ordered the cioppino and the osso bucco and both dishes where top notch; restaurant was beautifully decorated for Christmas and we had a lovely dinner; When we are in Baltimore again we will definitely return.
Sotto Sopra is a small restaurant, so the tables are closely packed. The restaurant was full when we were there on Christmas day. It's clear they aim to turn over the tables several times each evening because the service was very prompt. We never felt rushed, but our appetizers, entrees and dessert arrived much more quickly than I expected. The wait staff was attentive and efficient. (If we had been ordering alcohol perhaps the time would have been stretched out a bit.) The food was quite good and the servings were ample.
The salmon was undercooked. The veal saltimbocca was very good, as were the salads and the dessert. One of our salads was served without the shaved Parmesan cheese—the waiter said he would bring some to the table—but he forgot and we had to remind him, but then two of us had our appetizer salads sitting in front of us while the third was waiting for the cheese. Then the kitchen staff brought our entrees while we were still working on the appetizers, so they brought the entrees back to the kitchen and put them under warming lights until we finished the appetizers. It seems like there could have been better attentiveness and communication on the part of staff.
I brought my mom and boyfriend to Sotto Sopra for Christmas dinner and the entire experience was amazing. My mom is in a wheel chair and they accommodated her seamlessly. Our waiter David was a gem, extremely attentive but not too much. The food as usual was spectacular and we all had very different dishes, from seafood to chicken to veal. They did not have the wine I wanted but found a similar (and even better one) and helped on the price a bit, not necessary but very kind. Sotto Sopra will continue to be one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore and I can't wait to go back!
This is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Baltimore, which is saying something. Great food. Wine list is OK but markup is typically 2.5-3X retail which is a bit annoying. No sommelier when I was there so had to rely on waitstaff who have limited knowledge. We went on Christmas Eve as we have before. Very festive and packed and they schedule very tightly so do not expect your table on time. Service suffers a bit when this busy. But still a fun night.
We were dinning on Christmas Eve. I made our reservations way in advance. 3 days prior to our reservations we received a call stating there was a 2 hr max. We felt our dinner was rushed left with indigestion. We dine out every Christmas Eve and have never been told we had to be done in 2 hours. Although our food was good Our bill was very high for pasta dishes
