Fantastic menu and ambience, it was a frigid mid-week evening but, we had a great corner table where we could take in the lovely room. The staff was gracious and able to spend a lot of time explaining the menu and just pampering us. We loved it and will definitely return...
The food and service was outstanding. I had the Osso Bucco over the risotto that was to die for. The wait staff was charming and sociable. The restaurant space is old world, eclectic, and artsy.
Sotto Sopra is consistently excellent. The food, the decor, the service, all add up to dining at its best, at affordable prices. Certainly, there are more elegant and fussier establishments with prices to boot but Sotto Sopra stands out as giving excellent value to its clientele.
My boyfriend and I went to Sotto Sopra before the symphony (and we heard other guests also mention that was their destination). We had a super friendly waitress who was just attentive enough, but left us to our own most of the time. We had a really lovely time. My boyfriend's drink was The Soprano which was pretty good. I got something with chartreuse which I did not like, but she comped it and gave me a glass of wine instead. We had an appetizer of salmon tartar with hearts of palm fritters which were delicious. For our main course, he had lobster ravioli which he describes as "adequate" mostly due to the lack of any discernible amount of lobster. I had beef tenderloin which was perfection on a plate. We had a nice tiramisu for dessert, but my espresso was so good it almost outshined the actual dessert. The ambiance was romantic (though I wish the bar didn't have a TV in the back room which is full of mirrors, so no matter which way you're facing, it catches your eye). This review sounds almost negative, but I really enjoyed myself, I'm just trying to give a full disclosure for anyone else who goes!
Let me put it this way: my brain keeps thinking about the food. I want to return as soon as possible. The mushroom risotto was phenomenal; the duck was outstanding, as was the sea bass. Looking forward to trying more of the menu!
Loved the entire evening. The menu was thorough and expansive. Our waiter --- in addition to the food --- was absolutely fantastic. He is from Uruaguy and was as professional and personable as anyone who has served us. The duck confit was so tender --- I am not a big "gamey food" fan but the duck confit --- after being tenderized for 12 hours --- was phenomenal. As a family who makes our own pasta we are typically disappointed when we dine out ---- That was NOT the case at Sotta Sopra. The pasta was cooked prior to serving and it was clearly evident. Whenever I dine at an Italian restaurant for the first time I invariably try the house marinara and again, was elated with the freshness, texture and flavor of both the fresh pasta and sauce.
Ambiance of SS is warm.....people friendly and love the high ceilings.
I rate Sotto Sopra and Solid A
Lovely experience. Good service, nice food.
Octopus salad fabulous! Best we've had, and we've had it all over the world.
Sotto Sopra continues to shine after all these years. If your looking for a nice night out with very good service and food then this is one of the best Italian alternatives in Baltimore.
Sotto Sopra is easily the most well rounded restaurant in Baltimore. It's hardly changed a lick since it opened and I hope it never changes. The atmophere is classically upscale, but comfortable and unpretentious. The dining room maintains a subtle hum of conversation as tables sit within cozy proximity without ever crowding your privacy. The wait staff are charmingly attentive and eager to converse, but never intrusive. The tightly organized wine list provides plenty of guidance for wine noobs like me and enough variety to satisfy my geeky drunkard friends.
Most importantly, the menu consistently delivers traditional staples like the rich warmth of Osso Buco, the bright tang of Spaghetti Neri, and the earthy depth of truffled risotto. The prices are generally reasonable, with some room for decadence, and the menu has options for both adventurous and conservative eaters.
In short, Sotto Sopra has something for every palette, and most price points. If you're not eating here at least once a year, you're doing yourself, and your city, a disservice.
Attentive service, delicious food, and people at every table. Not a cheap meal but lots of special occasion and birthday dinners. Cocktail dresses to jeans and all ages. Not rushed, not overly noisy. Too bad there is a tv at the bar. One of the four dinners was wrong so therefore late but we got to keep the mistake!
The food and service was amazing. The homemade pasta and sauces are delicious! Our waiter Alex was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive.
I went with my family for dinner Christmas Day, and it was a lovely occasion. The space is very impressive, dark and cozy. The hostess and all the staff were busy but checked in frequently and were very gracious.
But really the star here is the food! From the lobster bisque to start to all our entrees, the food was perfect with no missteps. My mother's spinach ravioli vanished from her plate, and she is quite picky about her food generally. My father's tenderloin and brother's duck confit were cooked perfectly. I actually opted for their chicken, which may seem boring, but it was perfectly cooked with crispy skin and delicious rich sauce. Kinda hungry now...
Managed to miss out on this place for the last 10 years somehow, can't wait to go back!
This restaurant is an upscale Italian restaurant. The food was amazing. The waiter was nice and very attentive to our needs. However, the kitchen was busy and it took a long time to get our food.
I told the manager if she could take something off our food for our inconvenience'. She checked with the general manager. He told her that he could not take anything off our bill for that evening. However, they gave us a $100 gift certificate for our next visit. We both could not believe it. Sotto Soprq really knows how to take care of their customers.
As always, a incredible dining experience at Sotto Sopra.
After enjoying many of the long standing restaurants in Baltimore, it was the need for a holiday venue that brought us to Sotto Sopra. The attention to detail is obvious from the staff through every course of the meal. Wine list is varied and well priced. The Osso bucco is a plate of heaven. What a missed opportunity not to have dined here before!
Food was quite good as usual, but it seems that they were understaffed. The war after the order was quite long, and service deteriorated after meal was served.
The service and decor are very good. The food was well-presented and also very good. But the pricing struck me as inapproprately high. Wine prices were way high as well. I would say that for lunch, the $18 charge is a very good deal. Anyway, that's how I saw it.
Festive Christmas Eve dinner. The food and service were excellent. My only quibble is that the wines in the $40-80 price range are often marked up 3X, sometimes 4X retail. If you search you can find one for 2.5X. And it is not like these are rare, limited edition releases or 95 pointers or that we are in DC or Manhatten. It did not take away from my experience, but does make me less likely to return frequently since I think good wine is essential to the dining experience.
The homemade pasta is all excellent. The highlight of the evening was the fried calamari that was fresh and tasted so much better then what you find normally. Try the proscuitto appetizer, while the proscuitto is really good, the sides are fabulous, fried artichoke hearts, a small salad in a baked parmsian shell, and some interesting pickles. lobster ravioli, fettuccine, bolognaise ,scallops with risotto, and ricotta gnocchi were all excellent. The desserts are all classic and excellent
My only very small complaint is that they serve focaccia instead of regular italian bread along with really good grissini.
This was the first time I had visited Sotta Sopra and it was Christmas Eve which may have somewhat influnced the evening. The food was excellent but initially the service was a bit rushed, with our waitress constantly asking if we had decided on our orders. She did however get the message and soon slowed down and the evening, and our meal, were quite enjoyable. The food was excellent, paced well and artfully presented. I would certainly go back on a non-holiday evening to enjoy the pleasant atmosphere and exceptional food again.
Sotto Sopra has nice atmosphere and a great dinner and drink menu. Service was friendly and very attentive. It is possible tables were added to accommodate the Christmas Eve crowd. It seemed as though several tables were added to an already cramped space. It was uncomfortable sitting and it was very awkward for staff to move. I would have gladly given up my reservation had it made it more comfortable for other diners.
Excellent dining experience. The waiter that we had was very attentive and knowledgeable with a very pleasant personality. The food, from the appetizers to the dessert, was delicious. I will be returning.
Great birthday. Rack of lamb was perfect and the carbonara was rich and flavorful.
Sotto Sopra maintained its standard of delicious meals, and the room is attractive - a nice setting for a festive lunch.
Our waiter was beyond helpful, and we were glad for the help with a complicated menu. The food was delightful, the restaurant was warm and vibrant on a cold Baltimore night. From start to finish this was a wonderful experience and we'll be back again for a special night out.
Loved everything about our dinner. This restaurant has maintained its quality and innovation over many years. Well trained and knowledgeable staff, great food, lovely setting.
With a slightly higher rating than other available restaurants on Open Table i booked a dinner for a friend and me on Monday night. While our waiter was newer at the position you would have guessed he had been waiting tables for many years. He knew the menu and guided us to favorites and exceptional food, the Ossobucco and Halibut, plus a terrific prosciutto offering. wines were also good and again he helped us find the best. The dinner was both business and personal, and we were left alone to speak and the service was seamless and did not interrupt a meaningful discussions. With large menus of food and wine it is always helpful to have a waiter quickly guide you to the exceptional food on the menu.
The squid salad and squid ink pasta were to die for. The service was very good but slow. There was one guy attending way too many tables at lunch time. It would have been fine if I wasn't starving. The food made up for it. It's all I can think about since. I need more squid ink pasta!
I took my girlfriend for her birthday here. We were both impressed. We had the 2 specials (prosciutto appetizer and duck confit) and 2 regular dishes (goat cheese salad and lobster ravioli). Each were prepared to the best quality. The atmosphere was excellent for a romantic evening. One thing we did not expect to see on the menu was a cheese list. We would definitely come back to Sotto Sopra to check it out!
I had a friend in town for a meeting at the Convention Center. It was an easy walk for him, and I managed beautifully with valet parking, despite the rainy, Friday rush-hour traffic. Inside, the warm, vibrant scene was a great place for a reunion! Thanks!
This is not your typical Little Italy American Italian food. Sotto Sopra has a creative and skilled chef, and the food is comparable to the cuisine in Bologne during their yearly epicurean festival. I have dined at Sotto Sopra many times, and have never been disappointed. We are fortunate to have such a gem in Baltimore.
My fiance took me to this restaurant for my birthday dinner. I must say that it is one of our best and memorable dinners to date. Food was excellent! and service was exceptional! Our server Scott is the best server we've had since we started dating. He went above and beyond in making my birthday dinner amazing! We loved sharing stories about our dinner to our families and we can't wait to go back with our loved ones! :) - R
Have been eating at Sotto Sopra for years but it had been a while since we last visited. Overall still very good and close to excellent on all fronts. Food and service are the highlight of the dining experience. Fish specials are always very good. The restaurant has been around for years and there's clearly a reason for this!
Tables were a little crowded and wine list was a little too expensive but everything else was fantastic. Some of the best we have had. Will be back.
Just a great place to go. I have been going to Soto Sopra for years and it does not disappoint. All courses are perfectly proportioned and flavors are bountiful.
Tables are a little close together. Could be noisy if crowded
This kitchen remains one of the best in Baltimore, and the service we received on our last visit was superb. You can't go wrong with most anything on the menu we have discovered. This time was a delicious fava bean soup and duck confit with a 5 mushroom risotto to die for. We will keep coming back.
We had an 8:30PM reservation and were told to go to the bar for "a few minutes". About 25 minutes later, our table opened. The food is delicious and the wine list diverse, but the place to needs to prepare better for busy Saturday nights.
We got a corner banquette and that made the full dining room tolerable for noise. The menu is always delightful - specials on a separate page and the reliable and well-tested general menu with items I still adore - after nearly 20 years of dining in Ricardo Bozzio's establishment. From the home-made focaccia and olive oil to the delicately spiced duck breast, the meal was well-paced and served. Our waiter was a little full of himself and missed slightly on my order, but he was trying very hard to please. He should relax and know that the food at Sotto Sopra stands for itself very well. A couple of bottles of Brunello di Montalcino were sumptuous as sangiovese is one of my favorite grapes. One of my tablemates, who was hungry for pasta, took my advice and had the pasta carbonara which he practically inhaled. The other friend ordered the lamb chops and nearly ate the bones as well - they were so tasty. Sotto Sopra continues its meticulous menus as they have from the first day they opened. I expect I have had 100 meals or more here, and I have never been unhappy. The staff is well-trained and in addition too being competent, they are friendly as well. I'm coming back, Ricardo!!!
Everything was delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to any foodie. I've been to the restaurant twice and enjoyed it immensely both times.
