Incredible short rib and white chocolate mousse dessert.
Amazing. Everything about the experience was top notch.
Best food in Charleston. Excellent!
I did the tasting menu which is at the counter. The chef and staff were all great and super knowledgeable about the menu and all ingredients. They try to locally sourced as much as possible, which is always a great feature when you’re visiting somewhere to try local fare. I was there at 7:30pm during COVID so the restaurant could only legally be at 50% capacity but it filled up as the evening went on and the ambience was great. Non-pretentious and you could dress up or be casual and still feel comfortable. Highly recommend.
We sat at the “bar” facing the kitchen and got to chat with all of the kitchen staff. The food was amazing, the ambiance was perfect and we absolutely loved then vibe of this place.
My absolute favorite restaurant in the USA!
Excellent farm-to-table menu. Lots of vegetarian options on the menu. Great service.
Absolutely delicious. Local and fresh. Thoughtful, small and scrumptious.
Sat at the chefs counter. Delicious!!
Excellent quality food for Valentines Day prefix-fix dinner
But appetizer portion (I’ve seen larger postage stamps) and main course dishes were way, way too small for a $75/pp price tag
Great food combinations unique. The corn bread was dried out.
Would go again but the seats were very uncomfortable. People in my group felt the same way.
Staff were great, knowledgeable. We did have a loud party next to us and the staff were apologetic.
Flavor profiles were unique, Chef knows what he is doing.
The restaurant is off the beaten path.
The vegetable options are unique and plentiful; yet, nothing is outstanding. The crab and cucumber appetizer narrowly misses the mark of very good; but then, the crab falls into the green juices at the bottom of the low bowl and disintegrates. The chef is certainly trying to make a go of it!
I can see behind the costume of the restaurant that cuts decorating corners under the guise of being Earthy, natural, or farm-to-table. As such, the decision is made to increase the neglect of the restaurant space by adding more hints of squalor instead of more hints of money. Shabby was not chic in the 80's and it certainly isn't in 2020, especially in Charleston, SC. Save it for Austin, Texas where the college crowd has overrun the city.
I dined at the end of a Saturday evening and nearly every table had dishes that had not been cleared. Nor, did it seem that cleaning was on the agenda until after closing. Last, it is not a plus to see into the kitchen; although, one might argue that it lessens the fear that "undesirables" may be lurking amongst the cartons and bottles piled on every surface. The kitchen looked clean enough, but messy.
Although the staff was kind and fairly good at their jobs, it seemed they had no plan of action. At the very least, an additional person to bus the tables is in order in the near future.
All in all, I would hire the chef in a heartbeat. He has a gift, but needs a bit of discipline, or at least, less on his plate. Go early in the evening and steer clear of the animal protein as it was not a strength.
After hearing my coworker rave about this place, I made a reservation for my husband and I. We arrived about 15 minutes early just to wait at the hostess stand for several minutes before ever being greeted. When we finally were acknowledged, we were told “it’s going to be a while before I can get to you.” I said “we have reservations.” She said “oh great, well the only table I have is on this side (I assume the more casual side, not the actual dining room)” so we took that. Then we didn’t get any menus or anything for another maybe 10-15 minutes. And it just continued that way. The food? Great, no complaints at all. But I’m giving my friends warnings “great food, slow and lacking service.” To be a little fair, the girl was nice enough, but she was making excuses then saying she was going to give us more attention.. that just never happened. Since we were sitting by the door, I overheard several people leaving saying to one another “takes forever to get out of this place.” So I guess we weren’t the only ones.
We had an early dinner right when the place opened and Tres took very good care of us... he was short handed that evening but the food was still on par and he paid us very appreciated personal attention. The food is inventive, creative, not meat-heavy and takes advantage of the local area producers... which means we’re getting a taste of South Carolina every time! We dine here often when we’re on business in Charleston, and will be back.
The service and hospitality was impeccable. Food was incredibly good and so tasty and unique.
We were visiting from out of town and this place was a gem! The food was excellent and there were many vegetarian-friendly options. The staff members were very nice and polite, and the decor was fun and eclectic. We will definitely return if visiting Charleston again.
Absolutely delightful - off the beaten path but we'll worth the effort - a foody's delight
Great that this restaurant is farm to table, getting their produce from local farms, so everything is fresh and the restaurant benefits the area! The staff was really attentive, and our waiter was outstanding. He was very friendly and willing to explain the dishes and wine pairings. The food was delicious - we especially liked the chaat, but since the menu changes all the time, it may not be on the menu again. But you can trust what they have, the menu was very good, we ordered several dishes and it was great.
Good food. No major issues.
My favorite restaurant in Charleston. The food is delicious and the wait staff amazing. Hope to be back soon. Thank you, S&S.
The food was absolutely amazing. Chef came out and talked to us about the meal and everyone was amazingly friendly. We were here for the weekend on a girls trip and everyone wanted to definitely come back to this place again. We tried almost everything on the menu due to our group size and we liked everything. Please come open a restaurant in Raleigh.
Great food in a rustic pub atmosphere. A small place with great service.
We were with another couple so ordered several dishes to share. We were all blown away by the flavor, freshness and quality of the meals. Every dish was an interesting, complex and delightful blend of flavors and texture. Absolutely wonderful. Definitely a special place. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
Tucked away gem only a couple of blocks from Upper King in a quiet neighborhood. Small and cozy we were pleasantly surprised with both the quality of the food and the chef's use of unique ingredients with each dish. We will be back for sure.
Wonderful—absolutely no complaints!
Such an amazing meal! Our server was incredible and the food was outstanding. My boyfriend and I split the vegan menu and he supplemented with the pork belly and shrimp/grits dish. We were both blown away by our meals. The wine selection was unique and the server made wonderful suggestions. It was one of the best meals I’ve had! If we lived in Charleston we’d already have been back!
The online menu did not match the seasonal menu. The options were very limited and did not seem worth the walk there.
We had a fabulous dining experience at Sorghum & Salt - in fact, this was our best dinner during our entire stay in Charleston. We sat at the Chef's Counter and did the tasting menu and wine pairing. The dishes were innovative, and delicious. Christian is an extremely creative and talented chef. We highly recommend doing the tasting menu / wine pairing, as it gives you a chance to talk to the chef, owner and entire staff, and try excellent wines you will have difficulty finding anywhere else. Sorghum & Salt is a must for anyone who loves great food and wine, local sourcing and fun conversation.
Food was good but small portions for the price. Won’t dine here again.
Absolutely amazing meal from beginning to end. The food, the service, the ambiance. Most unique, make you feel good eats of the Carolinas.
UPDATE: After dining at a similar restaurant in Chicago, we are confident this is among the best meals we ever had. Nothing can compare.
We sat at the Chief’s counter and it was such a neat experience. They talked to us the whole time and every suggestion they offered was fantastic! Great date night.
Overall a big, "WOW This is Great." The food was excellent pairing of tastes. We tried six small plates between the four of us and were filled to the brim. The eggplant sausage was especially unusual and great, even for an eggplant hater like myself. Vegans and vegetarians will find plenty options. There is a Chef's tasting though you have to sit at the bar to order.
Absolutely fantastic vegetarian friendly place. The vegetable sides were extraordinary. Highly highly recommend. Michelin worthy.
Excellent, innovative, local food choices. A++ restaurant!
The food was absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. We were surprised at the cost of wine (by the glass and bottle) and how large our bill was. For a date night with another couple with babysitters back at home, we were aghast at the $400 bill. It was a very expensive night. We love everything about S&S but the price.
Really inventive and unbelievably tasty meal. I have been twice and simply allowed the server/kitchen to bring plates (like a tasting menu). Amazing combination of ingredients and sublime flavors.
It is loud and laid back. Not the best for formal romantic dinner. Good for fun, relaxed, outstanding meal!
Amazingly knowledgeable and friendly staff. Great farm to table options - vegetarian friendly. Off the beaten path.
If you're vegetarian, you'll love the food choices. Even if you're not, the food is amazing! Ask for good wine recommendations you pair with food.
Quite honestly one of my favorite places in Charleston. Small plate options, great wine, super welcoming staff. Just love it
