Nice date nite Italian
Incredible experience with great service and outstanding cuisine. I highly recommend to everyone who is wanting a memorable night!
Somewhat weird experience for us as we are frequent customers at Sophia’s. It was emptier than usual but they were blasting music so loud that we had to ask them to turn it down. They recently got a new chef and one of the meals we got came out way undercooked for medium well, which is what we ordered.
Overall a very good experience. We thought it very odd that the server was instructed to give us instructions on how to order, per the chef. In other words, he wanted everything ordered at once. I do feel this place was a little pricey for the food offered.
Went there with a bunch of couples! These couples were from Austin and never been there and I am from San Antonio! We had an excellent food great conversation the place was a lively and seductive!
Try the lobster and shrimp Fisili Pasta!
This restaurant is all about the ambiance. Beautiful interior. My food was not good but my date's was. Service at the bar was not great but our waiter was pretty good. It should be more upscale because it has such a romantic atmosphere.
Great ambiance, beautiful, intimate space downstairs with a lovely bar. Service was excellent. Menu changed with a new executive chef from small plate driven to more traditional. Was disappointed that the octopus was no longer available, but the entrees were very good. Will return!
Sophia’s has a supperclub look and feel. We had a pasta dish and the salmon—both were delicious! The old fashioned was a top notch cocktail. I loved the decor and the music. While we were visiting Austin for the first time, this was one of the places we’d definitely go back to. Well done!!
Service was not good. My food was not good and the waiter never got back to our table. Other dishes at the table were fine will not recommend
Awesome food, they do not allow for substitutions unless you have an allergy so review the menu 1st.
Dark, dungeon ambience- quiet and great for a business meal or a date.
Food is sensational and our waitress was professional, attentive and knowledgeable.
Drink cocktails - can’t recall the name of this one but it has smoked rosemary- it’s a must!!
The overall experience was awful.
Good food, overpriced, and they literally played techno beats so loud we couldn’t hear each other talk. Very odd choice for a nicer restaurant .. would not go back.
Our waiter Faust was outstanding. Cocktail recommendations were 2 for 2. Octopus, lobster bucatini, half chicken, and s’mores dessert with homemade marshmallow - sincerely one of my favorites meals in Austin. Only request is to enlarge that lobster bucatini portion because it was that good.
Sorry guys, but your time is clearly up in Austin and it shows. I’ve eaten and Sophia’s a handful of times, and hadn’t been in awhile, so figured we’d come back. We arrived at 7:15 for our reservation and didn’t have a waitress to our table for 45 minutes. I asked for one and was told one would be right over. 5 minutes later I asked again, and we finally got one. We hadn’t been served drinks or water or anything yet during this entire time. We just sat and talked at our empty table trying to be patient. (Only 2 other tables full at the restaurant, so not a busy thing). The food was also just ok- recipes had changed and weren’t as good as they used to be. Also, the bathroom had cockroaches on the floor by the toilets & toilet paper holders on the floor (so no toilet paper in some of the bathrooms unless u wanted floor toilet paper). Super disappointed as we used to love coming out for a big meatball and cozy evening out, but never again.
Great music, atmosphere, vibe — loved it
Not welcoming and snooty employees. Small over priced portions. Just another trendy, pricey Austin restaurant. Underwhelming to say the least.
Great food! Great service I would totally recommend.
They were out of lots of wines (all Pinot, Chianti). They didn't have the whole fish that is prominently advertised on the website and one of the reasons we went. At 8 we were told kitchen was closing (on a Thursday night) and we were rushed to order dessert. When we went to order dessert, surprise, they were out of everything but two things. It's very dark and felt awkward and we felt rushed to leave since I guess kitchen was going to close so everyone could go home. The food we did get was ok (meatball and salad were good, bruschetta was not good we didn't even finish it, and the pasta dish and vegetable dish we got were very good). I would not return. We went to celebrate a special occasion and it didn't feel special at all.
Very cool environment. The service was awesome and the staff was super friendly and nice. Very cool mix of amazing food and modern, yet nice, upscale ambiance. Would definitely recommend for a nicer dinner / date!
My fiancé and I had an AMAZING experience at Sophia's for Valentines Day. The chef ought to be ashamed of himself.... the food was too good. I also enjoyed the romantic atmosphere and music.
Sophia's definitely defines fine dining; great place to feast on top quality meal
My boyfriend and I went for Valentine’s Day. We are younger adults and it was well apparent that we were not attended to like the other guests. The food was great, but the service was bad.
Sophia's is so amazing! Super sexy space, perfect for taking a date but also a great bar area to just grab dinner or drinks with friends. Food is incredible, service is top notch and the drinks are fabulous. Highly recommend!
Terrible experience. Staff there has no idea on how to handle a bad situation. Have been there several times in the past and noticed that establishment has gone down especially service. Appears just another austin restaurant that one time was good. Got lazy and now on downward spiral
All of our food was delicious, from the meat ball to the pork collar! The only thing I could say that wasn't the greatest was how close the tables were to each other. I would definitely go back!
This was a mediocre dining experience. The food was fair, but not outstanding. The service was indifferent. The ambience was pretty negative. I understand that dim lighting is considered desirable, but it was so dark that -- not only could I not read the menu or the bill (and the waitperson did not have any kind of light to help out), but you could barely see what was on your plate. Then, a group of about a dozen loud young people were seated next to us, and another group seated behind us so close that the gentleman behind me kept leaning back into me during the meal.
I was honestly underwhelmed. Several items were not available, basic bread baskets were not available, had to call the waiter/waitress several times to service the table with water, etc. This is not the typical experience I have had. I was very surprised.
Waiter was no where to be found. He took our order 8-10 min after we had sat down. We waited over 25 minutes for a salad. Each item ordered came out 20-25 min separate and each member was staring at the others eat. I asked for well done flat iron stake "may I have it well done?" Waiter: No, and you can't make any substituions. " I feel if I am paying for a nice dinner, I can at least have it the way I like it. Waiter never came back to check up on us. We asked for check, paid and left.
Asked for a quiet table in an out-of-the-way area for our anniversary. They sat us in the highest traffic area; main walkway 10 steps from both the bar and the hostess. Crowded and cold. Not romantic at all. Was willing to spend big $ for special occasion but won’t do it here.
Our server was lovely, smiling and knowledgeable though. She’s truly an asset to the place. Too bad she wasn’t in charge of the kitchen who took at least 30 minutes to get our food out.
Good luck to them. Hope the get their act together.
Perfect date night venue! Great food and service with a quiet, romantic ambiance.
We had outstanding service from Maggie, but the restaurant needs to be a little more flexible. We had some simple VERY requests to modify some dishes to accommodate for some dietary restrictions. The kitchen would not accommodate at all. Additionally, the lighting within the restaurant is abysmal. We were four adults dining and had to resort to during the flash lights on our iPhone on and facing them up to provide enough lighting in our booth.
Sophia's has a chance to be an outstanding restaurant but needs to be a little more accommodating.
We had Maggie as our server and she was AMAZING and funny with a great attitude! She recommended a few dishes that we ordered. The chicken and lobster pasta were delicious!
It was our first time trying Sophia‘s and we’re quite disappointed. The menu that is on OpenTable bears little relation to the menu we found once we arrived. It was much more limited. For example, there are three pasta dishes all of which have cream sauce. Good if you like cream sauce not so good if you don’t. When my wife asked to have a pasta dish with grilled vegetables instead of pasta she was told that no substitutions of any kind were permitted on the menu. However our salads could come with dressing on the side at the least. Because of the limited selection and their refusal to make any modifications we decided to leave before main course and went to another place down the street which was as usual just fine. They do have a very nice wine list especially of Italian wines with a large selection over hundred dollars. More limited selection in the more moderate range. For those of us who live downtown there are too many other good Italian restaurants to choose from that are willing to accommodate us. Why settle?
We were excited to try this restaurant, as I remember the space being unique and romantic from when it was Bess. Unfortunately, this is the best part about this disappointing restaurant. Upon being seated, we were informed that they do not allow any changes or substitutions to the menu, except in case of allergy - so apparently the chef's ego is more important that the customer experience or dietary wishes. Not cool. They wouldn't even leave olives off a salad, or let us order an extra side of the rice that came with the meal. The food itself was ranged from bad ( a raw tuna app that only tasted of salt) to pretty good, but not notable ( the chicken). We live in the Downtown area and love fine dining, but won't come back. There's too many other great choices!
A fantastic meal as always. This time we had the octopus and it was amazing. Jordan was a great waiter and made the special occasion even better!!
We LOVE Sophia's. Every time we go, we love it even more. This visit was fantastic as always - our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend for a birthday! It's our tradition now because they make it so special.
Very cozy and not very busy. Hope they stay in business cause we enjoyed it!
Sophias had a great NYE atmosphere. It has a wine cellar, intimate feel and private booths. The portions were a bit small, but that may have been due to the set menu for the holiday. I would definitely come back, it is a great date night/special occasion place, and its right on sixth street so there are plenty of bars to hop around to
Not sure what this restaurant’s concept is honestly. Advertised as an Italian supper club, with photos of rat pack icons on the wall, it was missing the ambience and service to make a good experience, plus the music was super loud club beats that contrasted with a 6:30 dinner spot. Food was not great and definitely overpriced. Waiter pushed the grilled octopus as outstanding, it was not. Over cooked with no flavor and piled on a bed of arugula and pita bread with no dressing or sauce. Never had crunchy gnocchi before I ate here, I’m good never having it again. Overall disappointing evening at Sophia’s, will not return.
We really wanted to love this restaurant but unfortunately we won’t be back. The place was not that busy but we still felt like we had to track the waitress down every time we wanted something. The food was just ok with a few dishes being served lukewarm. There’s a lot of competition in Austin so for this place to make it they will need to step it up.
